by Martin Reza Babry

PFDC - HAMBURG, HSV reached the round of the last 16 in UEFA Cup thanks to a 2-0 home victory over FC Thun of Switzerland.

Hamburg, with Mehdi Mahdavikia again playing the full 90 minutes, had the best possible start when defender Daniel van Buyten opened the scoring after one minute, after being played through on goal by Piotr Trochowsky, levelling the score on aggregate after the unlucky 0-1 defeat in the first leg.

In minute 33 is was again van Buyten who made it 2-0, again assisted by Trochowsky.

Hamburg controlled the proceedings until eight minutes from time, when midfielder David Jarolim received his marching orders for his second booking of the day. This resulted in exciting last minutes of the match in which Thun tried all to mark the important away goal while Hamburg was given enough space to launch deadly counter attacks, however, no further goals were scored until the final whistle.

Mehdi Mahdavikia did not quite have his best day, however, still showed a solid performance as rightback. After defender Guy Demel came on five minutes from time, Mahdavikia played in midfield and was involved in some Hamburg counters.

Hanburg's next opponent in UEFA Cup will be Romanian outfits Rapid Bukarest, who eliminated Hertha Berlin by 3-0 on aggregate.
