    Our artillery is suffering !

I Got one more quote by the little warrior, Napoleon:

"God is on the side with the best artillery"

    very wise and applicable words.

while ppl may talk about bad luck and good luck or ... ( remember s korea game , and how the issue of "luck" was brought up to cover our deficiencies in tactics , formation, player selection, .... ? ), the "reality" ( that word , again ) is the teams that have better offensive, better men, better tactics, better stamina, better psyche, better .... win games.

now, do I think we are on par with portugal or mexico ?
    no.
but we're not that far behind, if we consider our potential.

and I beleive, considering iranian football's NATURE, which is offensive & attacking football, and the kind of players we have, we MUST base or at least use this characteristic in our game plans heavily.

and that is not achieved, unless we bolster our attacking tactics.

    have we done that?
    no.
we have regressed so much that we have to wait for our defenders and defense-minded players ( who make up a disturbingly LARGE majority of our TM players ) to come up and score goals !!

    what does that show?
that our team has no , or not enough ideas in offense !!

and that is a major shame for a team known for its attacking nature !!

    why?
who has done this to us?

as I have always said, turning away from our inherent nature , and trying to force a half-baked and in-experienced defensive attitude onto the team has resulted in us falling in between the stools.

we are neither good at defense, nor are we as effective in what we were famous for; attacking football !!

when some of us were screaming and asking questions about packing 7-8 defensive minded players into a team of 11, that too against third rate ASIAN teams , some friends said "oh, it is nothing. dont worry" !!

NOW, seeing how incapable and crippled we look on the pitch to score against teams like s korea's B/C team, japan's B team, macedonia's B team .... is coming back to bite us in the arse, right ?

What do you do? Copy and paste your old posts?! They are all the same whines!
What is your purpose? to get your friends (I don't wanna mention their names) saying "An excellent post", "Another great thread", "DD you are so right" "Mr. X has ruined our team, DD for presidency" "Bla Bla Bla"

        No need for that guys.

No. I guess Peyman jaan, that attacking mind we had in our football, never got us anywhere.

Nevermind our nature that much. Its what is right to do. And that is
        1/ Balance
2/ Knowing where you are in world of football
3/ Do not exaggerate or be over confident

Balance is the word to use. First produce some sort of a respect for yourself in the world of football with a lot of respect for others and by means of a little "non'risky" business, and then change balance over the years and show your capabilities considering your new position in world of football.

All the teams you mentioned are pretty much in par with us. We should have an edge against all of them. And we do have that much edge. When needed, we are gonna show it, god willing.

        Thanks
        Soheil

          Your agenda is just annoying.

And thumbs up for quoting the great "coach" Napoleon. He indeed must know how to play a successful World Cup.

1- soheil jan , believe me , just as you say we are not all that bad and not that behind those others teams, I also believe so.

but "having" an implement is diffrent from "using" it, and the "method" we use it.

give a kid a hammer and he will not do a good job of nailing a picture.
give the same hammer to an experienced person, he will do it fine.

yes, we do have some promising players who , I hope, are still hungry for goals .... but our formation and tactics havent been exactly providing much for attack !

and plz, all friends, dont mistake "attacking football" with "reckless football".
obviously no-one want an imbalanced team .

it is the same attacking football we demonstrated that has got us the fame and the name in world football .... never mind its significance in the larger scheme of things.
it is that attacking football that got our players into europe.
it is that attacking football that resurrected us in football after the revolution.

and while we have gained respect in the past few years, but the HARDER job in RE-GAINING that lost respect was done by .... yes, .... attacking football.

              ------------------

              2- to martin:
my agenda is to see TM get the MAXIMUM out of this WC.
to the last...... absolute last % , so there's nothing left.

MY agenda is to finish the WC and NOT feel or say "Oh, we could have done that little more, or got that extra play, or that tiny bit more stamina, or ..... " !

and if you cant understand the true "meaning" or gist of the quote, ... well, it is not MY fault.

              ---------------
"class" was shown by the person who comes in and starts throwing words around and attempts to ridicule ( it is a different matter that by never adding anything worth mentioning, and constantly coming up with posts that are either accusing members, ridiculing others' words, saracsm, ... ONLY , this ridicule is usually re-directed inwards ) !!

I have always maintained, 'you get as good as you give' with me.
why dont I see guys like soheil or majid say such things?
becoz they maintain respect and recieve it duly.

              try it sometimes.
              it's sure worth your while.

You're agenda obviously is to downgrade the Federation and especially the coach whenever possible. You're virtually seeking for stuff you can use against them.

No positive word from you about anyone responsible ever, instead repeatedly accusations.

His words are so highly wise that we, 7-year old kids, can not understand them. (although they are just copy and paste from his old posts)

well, actually I dont have to "seek" for anything.

sadly, there are plenty of lacks & screw ups as it is to even warrant a search !!!

and all this is to make an issue of such screw ups, so they would NOT happen again.

let such stuff pass by and turn a blind eye to them , and the result is exactly whgat we see: REPETITION OF SCREW UPS .... again & again.

What a great post DD jaan - believe me when I tell you - I am not in the habit of cheerleading or putting hendooned under folks arms - the only reason I am writing this is to make sure you are not discouraged in raising such a simple yet important DARD of our football - getting childish and irrelevant comments suchg as: You are whining !!

You are correct - our artilery is lame for a football which has been built on an eighty year old foundation of "offensive minded football". You made a perfect observation of the players we count on to score for us are players with defensive roles. Our forwards are left to score only in unplanned situations, left at the mercy of defensive blunders.

The problem with some of our fans is that they are just not old enough to know about the couple of years (early seventies) when players like Mazloomi, Iranpaak, and later years Ghafoor Jahani and Faraki were our sole forwards - in a Raiikof style football we adapted only for a couple of depressing years (if memory serves me right). That football was quickly abandoned with maturation of Ghelich and Parvin and especialy Ashtiani which was the first Iranian right-back with more offensive assignments than defensive !! We abandoned the one forward football after failing misreably in 1972 Olympics and 1974 WC campaign - and did not need to go back to it upon arrival of Jame Valiahd talents like Roshan, Danaei Fard, Changiz,........ with the exception of one game against Holland in 1978 WC. This one forward (I call it Chicken-Shit) system never returned to our football - even during the Mayeli Kohan era - until Branco.

Well, our scoring has hit a heavy low, and nothing really has been done to change it. We have a huge number of chances a game, and just don't score. The Togo, Macedonia and even Korea game is a good example of this.

However, I don't believe Branko is solely responsible, and the finishing of our players is just horrible. I have not seen a team have so many chances, and not be able to score (Macedonia, Togo). The rule of thumb is, of course, if you don't make something of your chances, you will get scored on, and low and behold, Macedonia made it 2 - a shock results, embarassing, and one of the lowest points in Iranian soccer.

Does our mentality have something to do with it? Maybe, who knows. Branko does have this defensive-minded approach, which has taken us away from our usual flair to our patient, hold the ball game, and look for openings, which works against the weaker teams, but will not work against the major powerhouses of football.

Something does have to change. At least my opinion.

                          A side note:
When I take a look at these threads, I see 2 extremes: Peyman, who does not shed light on any of the positives surrounding TM, and MR and Viva, who completely ignore the many negatives in the team, or, do not think they are qualified enough to enlighten us on them due to Branko's superier knowledge of the game and of course, his coaching degrees, and so on. This is correct to some extent, yet, let me use an analogy to explain where I'm going with this.

Now MR jan, tell me. When you go and vote for a political candidate, do you believe yourself "knowledgable" enough to truly choose the "right" candidate? Or do you vote for the candidate that best serves your own political opinion? Perhaps, only those with degrees in politics should vote?
All I see here is DD posting his personal opinion on our attacking flair (which is not being used to its full extent and has taken a hit) and asking questions of our approach to the game (reasonably so, because like it or not, we are just NOT a defensive team! Heck, Even Mansour Jan has questioned the formation and tactics!). Do I personally believe Branko's game suits Iran the best? NO. Do I have to have a coaching degree to see it? NO. Just like you guys don't have to have political degrees to vote...

I don't see it fair at all that DD gets attacked in this way, even if you believe the post is "repetitive" or "whiny" or anything else.

I can openly say that I fully enjoy reading his posts, even though we rarely agree.

We have bigger problems than our suffering Artillery, payman jaan, here are just a few:

We have had a defensive minded coach for a VERY long time who is supposedly the best we have ever had (according to some people here) but our team still can not defend well. (just watch the first half of Japan game and notice how a team that has been together for 4 years plays)

We still don't know why we are going to the WC. Are we going there to showcase our defensive football? our offensive football? our aimless/mahalee football ? are we going to sell our young talent to the europeans? What young players? are we going there for better ranking? We are already ranked 20th, how much higher are we going to get? (remember how Dadkan and Branko used to brag about this ranking?) Fourth Seed, right?

The same IFF that claims to have done so much and THIS and THAT, chooses Mr. Yavaree to control the Omeed team and sends a team to the WA games with only 6 player who will be young enough to play in China!!! firgure that out! That's building for the future "the Dadkan way". The same misreable way our TM has been doing in the last 4 years. Where is the young team that mr. branko will supposedley leave for us when he leaves? Can anyone name a few players of that team?

The same IFF that repeatedley has said "we will keep the same coaching staff", tries (and fails) to hire a big name coach just hours before the WC draw. SOME Branko supporters here, have claimed that we must all support Branko or the team will suffer. I wonder how much pain our coach and his players felt when they heard that IFF was trying to hire someone else

It is fine to try to imporve your team by hiring a better coach, but if improving the headcoach is a good idea, why not try to imporve the Assistant who is in a MAJOR need of a change.

Attacking football, however it is interpreted, Will not get us anywhere at the WC. With offensive football we will LOOSE BIG in all three games and come back home with our tails between our leggs. We are just not good enough to play that style of football at the WC. At the wc we need smart football. Position football. Playing into our individul players' streangth. AND yes, Defend, defend, defend.

I think Branko's biggest mistake would be to change the system (not that he can). The same Mahalee style of football will be best for us at the WC. the only thing is that we WILL have to have 6 defenders (4/2) or (2/4). Hell, The Mahalee style might catch on.

BTW: payman jaan, kooye jam was a mess. I got pics and will send them to you when I get to boston, in a few weeks.

                              Cheers
