I can't believe Heshmat Mohajerani said...

that we will have no trouble defeating Qatar http://persianfootball.com/pfdcnews2...3168315415.htm. Underestimating them, specially considering the fact that they were the hosts. This in my opinion only helped motivate our opponent to play better and prove a point.
By the way we have traditionally had trouble playing the hosts in Asia. That is why I give the 2002 team so much more credit winning the AG title on the Korean's turf against all the odds.
I also have a comment on the player selection: why include a useless player like Oladi in the team but not Kaabi who should have been the captain considering his numerous experiences at the national and international level? You probably also realized that Roudbarian is not really an improvment over Mirza.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
    Looking on the bright side:
Mathematically speaking, the probability of a team winning championships back to back gets smaller every time: Say, if we had 50% chance in 2002, now we had only 25% to win it twice in a row. To win it a third straight time (like we have in 1998 and 2002), we would have had a chance of only 12.5%. As an analogy, even Brazil could not do it: They won WC 1994 & 2002 but could not live up to the task in 1998 and 2006.
In any event, speaking by the odds, I was not expecting a third straight championship. Yet I am happy that we participated rather than being banned and that we managed to get past the Chinese and the 1/4 finals. It was a shame to miss the final match by not performing well, but still there is a chance to win a bronze medal.
If anything comes out of this tournament it should be the learning experience and the fact that now we have a group of young players who could build on this experience and improve for the future tournaments. Maybe some of them will be in the backbone of the TM for the 2010 World Cup.

paradigm jan, I think Mohajerani was referring to the POTENTIAL of our youngsters.
I'm sure he wasnt aware how pathetically they are capable of performing, as well !
Also I think he overestimated simoez, just as some friends did, here !!!

      Doctor DOM,

what overestimate Simoes, the guy might not be Scolari but he has coached in the WC, Olympics (women), Brazilian u23 team. top teams in Brazil, Qatar and the Portuguese league.

That is good enough for the Iranian u23 team. Now tell me, is Qatars Bosnian coach so much better, smarter? Is that why we lost?
      NO!
We lost because there is no planning in our football etc etc. I am sure if we had changed our coach with the Qataris, we would have still lost.

          xoraster,
lack of planning in our football has absolutely NO BEARING in :

1- the team following only one single tactics, which is half-baked and not doen right ( lobbing the ball behind the defense )

2- the coach refusing to take out an ineffectual player , and keep him for the duartion of the game

3- poor substitution and poorer selection of players.
choosing at best, mediocre IPL players when he had far more influential players to choose from.

          4- ... etc.

I know our football is deficient. but we cant blame every single thing on it.
there are factors that could have and shd have been handled far better.

yes, we lacked many things, from preparations, to facilities to .... .
but by god, I am not going to stand and close my eyes to some horrendous team management by the bench either.

just becoz the guy is foriegner, it shd not mean he is good and all the fault is from us !

In any event, he should not have given any impression that beating qatar would be a walk in the park. As much as I realize that the 2002 team was much stronger, it is clear our players very much underestimated the hosts, otherwise we'd be playing for the gold medal tomorrow.

Also, we do always have problems playing with the Arab teams such as Bahrain and Qatar. That is a psychological weakness which is childish and that our players need to get over if they want to be able to play their game and be successful in the future tournaments.
