sorry, but given the recent developments of Clemente's offer and his views , the title of the thread makes for some ironic and almost worrisome thoughts.
so now we got our coach...
do we really?
considering Clemente's absurd claims that he will reside in spain and only visit Iran for TM practice or games, I must ask myself, do we really have a coach, even if he actually ends up signing the contract.
which, in itself, is still not guaranteed. since he said he'd sign AFTER observing and reviewing the facilities available to him, the condition of our football and livability in Iran itself.
Granted his disclosed salary ( 30,000 euros/month ) isnt much and is actually cheap. But what is kafashain/IFF going for?
cheap or quality coaching ?
I dont know, but is there anyone here that agrees a coach can effectively and qualitatively lead a team via remote control ? and appear only for key events and games?
hurdle one: isnt a part of a national team coach's job observing, filing and recording various prospects and players for his team in the league?
who will do these? ebrahimzadeh?
that effectively takes out a major portion of the head coach's impact on a team.
even if he lays down the rules and criteria for selection, during his short intermittent visits.
next hurdle: who trains and practices with the selected players?
unless clemente is ready to fly in and out every month or month & half, I dont see it possible for him to have any tangible impact on the WAY the team trains and plays either.
he cant expect the players to adapt or adopt HIS strategies and tactics on the rare occasion he visits Iran, while the rest of the time, an inexperienced coach takes the controls ( ebrahimzadeh is a good ASSISTANT coach, but not one who decides and lays down strategy or ... ). this will, at best, lead to confusion among the players, and at worst, leave the team even more defective in form.
hurdle three: will the players develop the much needed relationship with him when he's not here most of the time? we all know how player-coach relationship affects a team, especially in the more emotional eastern cultures and amateurish football like ours.
so while we stand to not lose too much money, is it worth it to get such a coach on such terms?
money: we are not that poor a country not to be able to afford 2-3 mill for a coach for 3 years. so lets not make 1 mill here and there an issue.

bahram jan, you are far too kind to branko by translating his meekness and survivalist attitude ( even if it cost his dignity ) as "tenacity".
But I agree, we NEED a tough disciplinarian to get our lads in shape. especially when we have guys like niki, sheyss, karimi, .... .
But before that, I ask, is he going to be that effective from afar?

well, this makes more sense:
I wouldnt mind if he left on some short periods as long as he kept his assistants busy with tasks and duties of following the IPL games and players.
I didnt agree with his first offer that meant he lives in spain and merely make trips to Iran.
=================
I particularly liked what jalali said about his appointment.
Jalali, ever the wise man with peripheral vision, said we MUST define our wants and demands for clemente. we have been hurt by lack of definition of our demands before with coaches like branko and ... etc.
We MUST make it clear to clemente we are not merely satisfied with just qualification for the WC and we need to do well AT THE WC ALSO.
I absolutely agree with jalali.
This time, having such a top rated coach and given a not very difficult path of qualification for the WC, I think we must aim for a very good WC set of games.
yes, some may say I am getting ahead of myself. But if we dont define what our aim is NOW, we may see the indifferent and care-free attitude that branko adopted when we sealed our qualification after bahrain game !
I know nothing's insured. But given the first round opponents, it is safe to say we'll qualify for the second round.
as for second round, unless something goes R.E.A.L.L.Y wrong, I dont see us not qualifying solely based on the fact that top 2 teams from each group qualify directly and the fifth team plays oceania. hence it is safe to say asia will have 5 spots.
now, even if clemente starts AFTER syria game, we shd be fine for the MAIN round which is the second round.
so lets define and make clear what we AIM for today so there wouldnt be any misunderstanding or laxity or complacency later on in parts of X or Y.

How do you figure "not very difficult" path? it's going to be two group of 5 teams , isn't it? with top two going to the WC and the 5th having to play a playoff series....
KSA, Japan, Korea, Australia .. that's four, then add to that, Iraq, Uzbek and China...
It will not be an easy Or "not very difficult" qualification round..... Far more difficult than Japan/Iran/NK/Bahrain with 2 teams advancing...

Behzad jan, lets be realistic.
I DID say if nothing goes REALLY bad, we shd qualify. and "bad" means we get into a group that has more than 3 of the 4 you mentioned; aussies, japan, korea, ksa.
what are the chances for that? not much.
so I guess it could be fair to say of the 4 teams 2 will be in each group.
which leaves us + 2 other teams.
what are the other teams that can advance to the second round?
uzbeks, china, qatar, iraq, uae, ... ?
if we ponder on the above set of teams, am I too reckless to say we can beat them more times than they us? or we have more of a chance than any of the 5-6 teams above?
and I'm assuming we dont qualify directly among the top 2 of the group, which I think we could and with a little hard work we would.
lets remember, once we have a coach ( clemente or otherwise ) we have many months left to become a tougher team , ready for the second round.
today it may look worrisome. but once the team gets rolling, I doubt we'd have any problem in the first round and these games can become great tools for the coach and team to work out their kinks and strategies and hone their tactics for the final round.
that's why I said "it's not very difficult".

Adding to exchanges of DD and behzad jaan.........
It used to be,us who had problems with Arab teams......., which has been less of the case lately....but, I believe, the aussies have that problem now,as they seem to not know, how to play with them.............
More over, The only team not too afraid of us, is japan....and South Korea does not want us in the same group.......
I realy think, the battle will not be among the power houses, but between power houses and the secound level teams.which the team who gets the most out of those teams will qualify. And our TM along with japan have less of a challenge than most other power houses.

It doesn't matter if Clemente can prepare us in time for Syria; this is not a pressing concern. The real reason we hired him is for the latter stages of the campaign, and, of course, the World Cup itself. He was hired with a long term view.Right, as the world goes, is only in question between equals in power, while the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must.
