Saudi Arabia is a team that will fight until the end , but that fighting spirit does not always wins them games. In the last Persian Gulf tournament , they were lackluster , in Asian cup , they started weak ( they normally do) but eventually ran out of luck and stamina against Iraq.

But..caution. This is the World Cup and all the teams will fight and make the best out of it. Previous forms does not count for much on the day of the match.

In brief, apart from the UAE & North Korea , the rest of the teams had their own share of the problems be it administrative or on the field.
A draw in the first match will be ideal , but honestly speaking , I am more inclined to go for a win in Riyadh.

It is important that a loss (heaven forbids) does not break the team and , the media permitting , Iran can bounce back like they always do.

that's the most important issue that we are going to face, imo... how will Daie ignore/react to the media.. and our media never really permits anyways, that should be a given. we just have too many papers in Iran..

the odds are that we will lose that game.. an in my opinion, that is not really a bad thing either.. I rather lose early than late..

It's the games 5 through 8 that we have to be on top form and Be able to beat KSA in Tehran, get a tie in Korea, and beat the other two where ever we play..(one on the road for sure)..

I kinda remember feeling really comfortable during the same round with Ciro's team, at mid point of the tourney.. ..

we tied Bahrain on our first game of the final round of WCQ, and had to beat them in Tehran to advance to WC 2006

We started very good with MK's team, and ended up having to go to Australia , without MK, and you know the rest..

I'd say let's face the toughness early...

At least Iran traditionally does well against both Korea's in the qualification stage.
"When I see the good in you, you get motivated, feel good about yourself and that creates synergy. It creates an environment where everybody can work better together. I think in the Iranian culture it becomes very ordinary to always see the bad in each other."

Iran vs South Korea has always been exciting. but I wouldnt say we have an edge. in fact neither side has an edge.
it's cut right down the middle for the two
it's almost like we take turns to defeat each other!

I also agree with behzad, those games in the middle, especially since we HAVE enough time to prepare, that are very important to get the bulk of points needed.

a loss at the start is not the end of it. but if by game 3 we are third or fourth, then that will put tremendous pressure on the team!
and some teams enter a vicious cycle at that point. they get nervous and jittery over losng ground, and start under-performing. which leads to more points lost, which cycles round to more nervous performances and .... !

So, a loss at ksa is not unforgivable. but we'll have to make up for it by keeping ourselves within the top 2 by the next 2 game ( game #2 & #3 )

If you look at the recent matches, we have an edge. Past our elimination by South Korea in the AFC cup in Lebenon in overtime by South Korea in around 2002 if I am not mistaken, we weren't beaten by them (to best of my recollection) except their win in PK in AFC 2007 championship.

Even in that game, our team was better than their. Right after wc2006 fiasco state of our football under an inexperienced and brash GN, our team got a draw in Seoul (played well in second half) and then beat them in Tehran (I think Badamaki scored the 2nd goal with a 2-0 victory in Tehran).

              1996 Iran won 6-2 ( asia cup )
              2000 korea won 2-1 ( asia cup )
              2004 Iran won 4-3 ( asia cup )
2006 Iran drew with Korea ( asia cup qualifier )
2007 korea won on penalties ( asia cup )

nobati ham ke basheh, nobat-e Iran-e

ali jan, the visiting korean team was NOT their main team. we both had sown up qualification and they sent their olympics or reserves team. so I, personally, wouldnt count that since we will be facing the MAIN TEAM in these WCQ's

but if we have to count it , then it'd be:
              .............. 2007 Iran won ( asia cup qualifier )
2007 korea won on penalties ( asia cup )

2008 ??? ( based on this trend, Iran shd win its HOME game )
2009 ??? ( Korea would win its HOME game )
.... aaaaannndd the wheel keeps going round n round !!
"wheels of the bus go round n round,
              round n round,
              round n round,
wheels of the bus go round n round,
all through the town, .... :
