Mayeli Kohan is the most misunderstood man in Iranian football.

I am sorry, I know he has alot of enemies, but as a fan of Persepolis and someone who knows he was one of the most gheyrati and honest (yet hotheaded) players in the late 70's and 80s he does not deserve the treatment he gets.

He is a hezbollahi, yes. But he has always been one. Even before the revolution he was very conservative. He did not become one like so many we see today in order to move up. You may even say he's a bad coach, but he's no worse than any other coach in Iran. He is strict and talks harshly, but has anyone actually been able to show anything he has said is a lie? Talk to most players who played under him. The only ones who ever had issues with him are the same ones who seem to have attitude problems wherever they go (Daei, Azizi,...). They nearly beat his son to death in 97 after Iran's near f***up in WCQ, and then 50,000 swear at him and his family while he can't say anything. He does not deserve this. You think he is a punk? You do not know the strength of the mafia of some of the Iranian coaches we have like Ghalenoei, Kazemi, Misaghian... Even Parvin was like a godfather of types in Iranian football but he is at least a javanmard and he only swore at his players and staff, never at the fans, opponents....

When I saw this video and saw the part where Kohan said "Yani man bigheyrat shodam", I really felt for the man. These are not fake tears. I think he has finally been pushed past the breaking point and is suffering or has gone through a nervous breakdown. I don't wish this on someone who despite his negatives has also done alot of good for Iranian football, TM and Persepolis.

every TM coach and referee is treated like this.

why should mayelli kohan be treated any different than GN, branko, Daei, misaghian, afsihn peyrovani and all the referees in IPL??

they have all done their best for iranian football...

I have never heard 50,000 people swearing at one man and his wife and children while in the stadium. I also have never heard of their kid being nearly beaten to death because of savage "fans". I think the problem is even random people swear at him on the street and he cant' take it anymore. No coach in Iranian football has been treated this way for such a long and sustained period of time.

there were times the whole stadium swore at Daei...
or at the referee, specially by perspolis & esteghlal fans when they fill the stadium.

referees receiving death threads or being attacked has happened in iranian football before...

          The guy has mental issue.

These things you mentioned, which are all true, didn't happen suddendly, it's been there for ages, so why the guy just suddenly woke up and saw his "gheirat vein" being inflammated?

Whenever you feel for the guy, go and read his so called open-letter, then you laugh instead.

Well, first of all thank you for the brave post, defending one of the most unpopular figures around here.

I agree he probably is not liar and rather honest, but he has other big problems.

He mixes sports with religion obviously. He wants Iranian football to undergo a moral cleanup. That is the last thing I'd want.

Also I think he simply is a bad coach. His biggest and lone success was his first headcoach campaign. After that, he was more a below-average Iranian coach.

              true.

and besides, the other guys like GN, parvin, daei, ... have their ... ummm ... back-up people and gangs , if not their own mafia .
MK has never had and was usually the odd one out becoz he never associated himself with any such gangs or thugs or ... or as we say club "leaders".

we are well aware of these factional "leaders" and what they do and how they are used to lead the fans towards certain views and chants. to deny that is to deny the morning sun.

and I agree, he's had a mental breakdown after that ss game.
I think now, he's taken it upon himself to be the "cleanser of all evil" in our football !!! and has made that his mission. that's why he's catching all sorts of issues like karimi's abuse of his players, then to banned drugs to ... !

it's all due to that breakdown !

MK has no gang? He has half of the government behind him. Quite obviously the influential Saipa president is one of his supporters as well.

                  where ?
saipa has to defend THEIR COACH at a time he was going through those issues after SAIPA-ss game.
dont mistake that for "mafia support or backing".
they never did it when MK wasnt saipa coach.

you guys base this on him being religious and think the gov't is behind him!
were they when he was facing the media and ss leaders ? hell even the IFF or STB didnt move a finger.
compared to the way they used to rush to ban malavan or bargh fans for swearing at a CLUB coach ( not even when he was TM coach ) .... does that look like "support" to you????

he is around, becoz he is around.
                      yes. it IS that simple.
much like how yavari or poorheidari or karimi or parvin or hejazi or Dr Z, kazemi, ... are around.
they get jobs , so they are around.

                      nothing special to it.
the problem is our traditional revolving-door coach-appointment system that never lets go of its coaches and merely shuffles them around!

I agree. MK is the best guy to hate in Iranian Football. I take him over GN and many of our coaches.. He is not very normal, but actually he is more normal than most of our coaches.. What coach in Iran is really normal??

Start from Daie and his religious hardcore beliefs (running his Tasbih while sitting on the bench and saying Ayatol Korsee), all the way to Firouz Karimi's psychopath comments..

There are no normal (as in perfect or great, on par with the Europeans/foreigners) coaches in Iran. That's why someone like Ghotbi was able to become People's favorite so fast and so vastly. He was just more normal than the ones we are used to seeing.

The problem is that once a guy does something "wrong" or says something "bad", we Iranian people, dismiss everything else that he might say or do as "bad".. we don't care what is being said, we care only about who says it.

Considering the attitude of some (actually most) of our younger players, MK is exactly what they need. So he is not all bad.. it's just he doesn't have any "diplomatic" skills, so to speak.

Not true. He is an employee of STB for like 20 years and he doesn't have a desk or office.. I think someone with half the Government behind him should have at least managed a desk for himself in the organization he has been working for , for 20 years. I would think.

MK wasn't given a job by THIS administration alone. He was hired by Kafashian, Dadkan, and Mostafavi at different times.

having said all that, in a normal situation, I would never want him to be the coach of TM.

                            ????

first one is about some personalities enjoying ...ummm... "extra" support from venues not exactly k0sher like thugs, mafia and gang leaders. especially the ss or pp personalities who have their own "hangers-on" who are known to our football and have organized gangs and ... .

the second one is a direct answer to your remark on how MK is "still around" ( I assume you mean finding a job ) and it shows he is not the only coach around getting jobs after his previous ventures, as almost 80% of vatani coaches are still around getting jobs.

so what's the controversy here, again?

(and it's not contradictory either, as they are two separate and different issues)

I think his religious attitude and looks has made it very easy for ppl to hate him, mistakenly associating him to iri.

yes, he failed in WC98 Q's.
but was he the only one?
                              the last one?
and given his results , was he THE WORST one? coz sure as hell we see others get far more shameful and disgraceful results than him, with players 100 times more exposed and int'l and pro than MK's.

the guy lost to qatar 2-0 IN qatar ... much like Ciro , 3-1 to bahrain.
at least he didnt lose to the lowly JORDAN IN AZADI !
                              did he?
or to ksa, again IN AZADI.
