I dont think many think that, mate.

the problem is "will we try to beat portugal" ?

coz if you read my post above yours, you'll see the mentality and game plan branko is often fond of , is to be cautious, restrict damage and generally , play an ultra-defensive game.
like having many players with defenseive duties than offense.
and the team's center of gravity way towards defense .

now, with such mentality, game-plan and player selection, how do you think we can expect to score against teams like protugal?

hell, if we meant to defeat teams like portugal, branko wouldnt be running away from meeting bigger teams for friendlies.

he wouldnt be applying ultradefensive methods against teams like panama, lybia, macedonia, korea's B team .... !

how will playing such defensive and frightened games, help us in conquering teams like portugal , who eat our friendliy opponents for breakfast ?

let me put it this way:

if we are planning to improve driving ability, you dont waste your time practicing cycling!

and if for more than a year , you have been practicing cycling, .... no matter what u say & claim ( to feed some teenagers ) , when the time comes, your driving wont be worth sh*t !

My head says Iran will beat Angola and lose by scores of 3-0 or 2-0 to Portugal and Mexico.

What ever people say we are completely under prepared....our defense has got more holes in it than a swive....our goalie is simply not international material....most of our team has been in shocking form lately....AND our 3 most important players...Kia...Hash and Karimi have had injuries!

My heart though says TM will come through with flying colours in the face of adversity and will do us all proud by beating Mexico. Drawing with Portugal and beating Angola....then we will humbly exit against the Netherlands with a 1-0 score-line in the final round of 16.

Doctor jan....My assesment of Branko is different than your.....
        I believe,branko is not conservative !!!
To me, he has been aggresive with better teams, and conservative with the teams we should beat.....
I am convinced, branko's plan with mexico,is to attack, attack and attack...untill we get two goles ahead.......it may not work, but that is what I think branko;s plan will be.

Dr. Doom, I recall precisely when you and I had a lengthy debate over Karimi's inclusion into the team. We all know how utterly incorrect your were on that issue!
Right, as the world goes, is only in question between equals in power, while the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must.

            Good observation.

Refer to the games against Japan(WCQ and AFC cup), South Korea(AFC cup), Germany and, more recently, Costa Rica. Branko utilized a fierce attacking game in all these instances against classy teams.

after a long time of thinking i finally came up with these outcomes that i think one of them will definitely happen:

if iran qualifies from group stage, it will definitely be one of these ways (in order of chances that it will happen):
(all results have iran losing to portugal. And iran, mexico, portugal beating angola because im 90% sure that will be the case in 2 months)

              portugal: 9 points
              iran: 4 points
              mexico: 4 points
              angola: 0 points

              portugal: 7 points
              iran: 6 points
              mexico: 4 points
              angola: 0 points

              mexico:6
              iran:6 (better goal diff.)
              portugal:6
              angola: 0

              portugal: 9 points
              iran: 6 points
              mexico 3 points
              angola: 0 points

3 most probable ways of iran NOT qualifying from group:

              portugal: 9 points
              mexico: 4 points
              iran: 4 points

              portugal: 7 points
              mexico: 5 points
              iran: 4 points

              mexico: 7 points
              portugal: 6 points
              iran: 4 points

so basically as long as we beat angola, and we tie mexico and have better goal difference than them and portugal and mexico dont tie eachother, and mexico doesnt beat portugal we are in.

if iran gets 0-2 points i will be unsatisfied.
if iran gets 3 points but plays good against mexico and portugal i will be happy.
if iran gets 4 points i will be really happy.
if iran makes it to round of 16 i will be really really happy.
my friend are you kidding me tie with mexico?????
have you seen the fast speed they have and how good they are at taking shots on net???? they will stay far from our net and take shots mersapoor will sit no his a$$ thinking the ball is on its way out but will find out that he was wronge whenthe ball goes in the net. we he can do that and now the world also know becouse mixeco has been looking at us for a long time.
portugal they will do the same and by the way it is not going to be hard for portugal or mixeco to get past nosrate and golmo
angola after losing 2 game will come out fighting to save face branko will most likely piss his pants and put us on deffence since we have alos lost the last 2 games so badly too and we will end up with a tie against angola
this is how it will happen
              teams points gs ga gd
              (a) portugal 6 7 1 6
              mixeco 6 6 1 5
              iran 1 2 7 -5
              angola 1 2 8 -6

              (b) mixeco 6 7 1 6
              porutgal 6 6 1 5
              angola 1 2 7 -5
              iran 1 2 8 -6

we do not have the fire power to get past the deffence of mixeco & portugal to play score and take goals type of mach and that is the type of game they will play with us them scoring and us looking at our merzapoor and our daie & hashemian thinkng just what are we going to do now???

when brains and intellect is missing so miserabely in our coaching bench, GHEYRAT is the ONLY thing that can save us from humiliation.

magar inke players like daei, kia, VH, karimi, .... get gheyrati and save the team ( as usual ).
coz so far it's been these players saving the incompetent coach's arse time and time again ..... every single game.
lets hope they pull it off for TM fans and Iran at the WC too.

now, when we talk about gheyrat, most of the time, all logic and calculations are thrown out the window. ( havent we seen that happen a few times? 6-2 against korea , for an example )

who knows...... with a bit of luck and a truck load of gheyrat ... we may just be able to pull off a win in our first game ( a surprise blow, catching mex off gaurd and complacent ) or against portugal ( having a bad day, which they are immensely prone to have as per history ).

so we may be able to overcome such impediments and obstacles such as mexico or portugal or branko's defective system or illogical substitutions or .... and get 3 points from any of these 2 games !

                khoda koneh .
                doctor doom jan
gheyrat has done a lot for us in the past it has even taken us for the 2nd time to the world cup but no matter how much ghayrat daie, kia, kareme, hashemian, rezaee, zandi, kabee... put out we still have players like merzapoor, nosrate and golmo right their to sh*t all over it they will make sure they play their game too. we all know that game runing out of the net when one should stay in the net and so on from merzapoor.
nosrate not staying were he should be making bad passes and put one in our own net.
golmo losing it like he did against jordan and puting one in our net then going to sleep in front of our net just so merzapoor can pick him up and tell him it's ok you played a good game people will be happey with your game back home
so you see we don't have a chance and let us not forget the cancer on TM that's right branko he will push for even more of a defenceve game he will pull out all attacking players and put in all deffenceve player that were meant to play the same positions

                  agha rage,

I also remember my views on karimi , and you know what?
I stand by them, even today.

what you conveniently omit is the FACT that THAT karimi is nowhere near the PRESENT Karimi.
one side; a lazy karimi who used to walk on the pitch and never get involved with defense, or couldnt be bothered about passing as his head was stuck into a "dribbling funk" all the time.
on the other hand, a karimi ( under magath's training ) who runs hard, passes, works for the team and helps the defense, and ..... etc.

you want to "create" ur reality, go ahead.
but dont expect others to live in it too.

I'm not going to waste my time going over things I said many times, but all I'll say is :
any player, whoever he may be, when out of form or out of fitness, shd be benched in favor of an in form player.

be it ronaldo, henry, zidane, ..... karimi ke sahle.

proper coaches, the world over do it.
you want to deny this, go ahead. but it wouldnt change the facts.

                  -------------------

Dr shark jan, it's all about one's standards and expectations.

one 80 Kg chap can be happy with lifting a 10 Kg weight and actually goes around boasting about it.
another 80 Kg chap will not stop trying till he lifts a 100 Kg weight.
even if he fails at 60-70, it shd be appreciated with his desire to push his goal further and further.

that is the difference between many ppl .

The same Karimi that was coming off 5 goals in the AFC cup, MVP of the Asian cup. He assisted against Japan, North Korea, earnt the freekick against Bahrain or North Korea in Tehran(I can't remember which one).

It seems Branko's choice to include him was absolutely spot on. You were wrong, I know how hard it is for you to admit, but you were. Unquestionably.
