Iran - south korea (asia cup)

    FIRST HALF:
Quite a scrappy game with very little excitement. From a neutral POV, a rather boring game.

    - Nosrati a bit nervous, with 2-3 fk’s given to Koreans near the box

    - Nekunam too quiet and inactive. And given his meager contribution to the game, maybe hadadifard can liven things up with more feeding of the front players. Becoz of this, ansarifard is cleanly taken out of the game … as if we’re playing with 10 men!!

    - Starting w khalatbari? Maybe he’d have been better coming in when Koreans are tired, to use his pace. Right now, he’s being muscled around by cha duri. Maybe someone more physical than khalatbari, would give cha a run for his money and tussles with him.

    SECOND HALF:

    - It’s just too defensive a strategy by iran. Too compact and closed (that’s why we see Koreans are more spread and cover more zones, hence collect more of the loose balls.)
And that’s why we keep allowing Koreans to cross and cross into our box. So far (min 63) we’ve handled these crosses. But how much do we want to push our luck? A lucky

    - I am quite confident if we used a more imaginative player in the midfield (like hadadifard) we’d have scored during normal time. But ghotbi was just too cautious and scared! But instead of hadadifard, he brings in shojaei, the POOREST performing player in our squad!!!!

    - Hajsafi has done quite well and have been impressive.

    - Absolutely pathetic shooting by our players!!! If your strategy is to stay behind and play gutless football, at least get your freekicks and shooting right. But I think that’s too much to expect from a coach who thinks a goal-less draw advances your team to the next round!!!

    - As much as pejman has been great in defending, his offensive moves and two golden opportunities have been absolutely abysmal! Twice he got massive chances (where he didn’t have anyone close to him to put him off) to get something done with a decent shot and first he air-balls it, then skies the second!

    EXTRA TIME 1:
    - Stupid move by aghili to try to dribble in front of the goal!

    - Magnificent save by hajsafi in defending, using his speed.

    - I see Koreans are more tired than our lads. But still ghotbi remains gutless and doesn’t bring in a creative player!! It’s like he is waiting for mistakes by the Koreans, rather than EARNING a chance by ourselves!!!
He shd know not always he’s going to get a lucky break like our last game in seoul . usually you SHOULD force it yourself. Very disappointing.

    - Shojaei’s contribution to the game: grass-rolling and a yellow card. Master stroke by ghotbi to bring this fool instead of a whole bunch of more deserving players!

    - And the goal is scored from whose side? Hajsafi & Shojaei failing to come along with his man, allowing him to do whatever he wants.

    EXTRA TIME 2:
    - Our international master coach is about to bring in gholami. Failing to see our team’s problem is NOT in the forward post, but in the LACK OF CREATIVITY in the team! Is this what he’s learned from his magnificent stints under advokaat & big Gus?

Aside from too little, too late, it also says a lot about his “game reading”.

    - Shojaei’s f**ked up performance continues as he falls like a leaf as soon as someone touches him, turning the ball over to the Koreans !!!

    what can I say?
all I can think of is: ONE WHO FEARS, DIES A 1000 TIMES, BUT THE BRAVE DIE ONCE.

Ghotbi's first decent opposition and he capitulates into his own shell, afraid of doing the most basic things in football.

Today you are the blind chicken finding the corn .

That was gutless indeed. It wasn't even necessary. Korea is no scary team. Starting with three DMs and a CB as RB is a bit too much. Ok, a coach can try, but why not sub in a playmaker for one of the three defensive dudes when it doesn't work?

I mean the backline wasn't quite stabilized by the defensive minded midfield, so boosting creativity a bit might have been a good idea. Heydari for Nosrati was a correct thing. But I missed Hadadifar or Mohammad Nouri dearly. Pejman Nouri is a fighter, but he has technical shortcomings.

Overall it was a deserved win for Korea.

In defense of the coach, there are so many issues which are no coaching thing, such as technical shortcomings or selfishness. Gholamreza Rezaei for instance simply never sees the open man beside him but only does takravi.

What made me very sad is that the team lost all confidence and from the beginning always tried to score a lucky punch only. With every possession they had, they tried to play a throughball, which were all easy turnovers in the end. They didn't even try to build up the game over midfield.

The attempts to counter were weak and the defense is not so solid that it can hold waves over waves of attacks over 120 minutes.

At least I am glad we didn't have another penalty shootout.

Sad that we in the end could dominate and create chances. Too bad we didn't take more risks earlier.

"I know Koreas like the back of my hand"
What a freaking joke he was. Martike forsat talab. Sharesh kam baba.

And about the game, apart from the fact that we got dominated and out played the entire 120 mins, wrong subs, no tactics and game plan.... everything else was fine!

Hala hey biyaym begim Armanestano bordim, Ghataro bordim, NK bordim...

Like Martin said, I don't know why our team didn't play like the second extra time. Our team was afraid until they fell behind and then it was too late.

Anyhow thakns to the team and coaching staff. Players played really hard and tried hard. Too bad we (fans, coaching staff, players) respected Korea too much.
"When I see the good in you, you get motivated, feel good about yourself and that creates synergy. It creates an environment where everybody can work better together. I think in the Iranian culture it becomes very ordinary to always see the bad in each other."
Afshin Ghotbi ( Former TM Head Coach)

Nasser Hejazi was the Takhti of our football.

I can't really blame Ghotbi for anything, except that I think Mo Nouri should have come in for Pejman Nouri at some point. I thought the Heydari sub rejuvenated our right side, and that's when things really started going right for us. In terms of the first half, they clearly dominated us and I think we can consider ourselves lucky that the ref blew the whistle at 0-0. 2nd half, better, perhaps had a slight edge, but overall, Korean players are disciplined, find tons of space between our men, move quickly, make the right decisions more often, and can work well under pressure.

Let's face it. We're in the era where in order for us to beat South Korea, (regardless of who's on the field, who's our coach, and what formation we choose), we need lady luck on our side. Korea, on the other hand, is always going to be the favourite.

All in all, I congratulate everybody for working so hard - even in the dying moments, we were still running and competing. We've had losses in the past where I was angry (Mexico, for example) - but today, even after the loss, I was proud of our team.
We thank and support Mr.Kamran Delan for many years of dedication and service to Iranian Football Community.

^ it is true that our football, in general, IS behind korean football.
but given today's game, how korea played and how the match progressed, I really believe we could have beaten this korean team.
and believe me, it has NOTHING to do with luck. this korean team was definitely beatable.

No. actually today you are the sleeping man who was woken up to face reality.
a reality some of you kept denying.

and to the rest of the freinds thanking ghotbi or seeing nothing wrong with his performance, one can start with the awful, pathetic substituting decisions, the abysmal tactics for the second half, his failure (for the umpteenth time) to see "form" is more important than "name", to the spineless way ghotbi dealt with our shortcomings in the game (generally, his poor game reading), to ... etc etc.
..... that is unless the ceiling of your ambitions is beating the likes of uae, singapore, ... etc

but as this is just another re-visiting of another similar situation, I see no point in any of this talk. some of us will continue to behave like coaches are from freaking Mars, some will continue to quell and diminish any talk of improvement or ambition, some will continue to support gutless wimpy football, some will continue to be star-struck little teenage girls, some ... .
while we have yet another undeserving unknown coach gain fame and fortunes from Iran, use it as a stepping stone and move onto better things.

now that the damage is done, some will say "oh NOW, lets pull ghotbi up for his mistakes"!!!!
what's the use? what is it going to change?
when we SHOULD have acted was BEFORE the damage occurring. not after.
now? lets just hope this charalatn leaves Iran, the sooner, the better.

btw, I just read kafashian is so brazen and obstinate to say "I will not resign" .. after series of disastrous failures under his rule!
wow! this guy really takes the cake.

Too much respect for the big "opponents" and not enough for the little guys.
Its why we play defensively and lose against teams like Japan, Korea and Saudi, yet pull wins out of our asses even when playing bad versus UAE, Kuwait, Oman...

Dr. DOOM you are a dreamer thinking one factor is the reason why we repeatedly fail to live up to high expectations. In order to simplify things, it's always just the coach. Wake up, gutsyness is not improving our players.

Some guy here in America was telling me, Iran is a very rich country. If you guys like soccer a lot why don't you spend some of that oil money hiring a very decent foreign coach, building some new stadiums, academies, and training facilities?

Still it was 10 years ago when the IFF hired that Croatia head-coach but he was unable to qualify us for the World Cup in 2002. Perhaps Iran had a better team back then with so many foreign-based players. Could it be the problem is from elsewhere?

such a pity we had to see pejman nouri do absolutely nothing in the middle of the pitch except dirip bokhoreo toop lo bede.
his contribution was minimal in defense, his offensive contribution was 0 and he couldnt maintain possession or play one touch passing. he also had the most amateurish shots on goal. and ofcourse, allowing all the time and space in the world to take the shot at our goal and score.

no wonder the guy hardly ever made it to TM during any of the previous coaches tenure.

mohd nouri combined so well with heydari and rezaei against UAE in second half and andranik supported them from behind. hadadifar was also doing great with haji safi but ghotbi opted to play pejman nouri for over 100 minutes!

As I said in the other forum, Korea undoubtedly have the stronger league (see recent ACL and previous ACL competitions) and they have more legionnaires. Plus they have more international experience as they play in World Cup regularily and have better friendlies.

I don't know why everyone thinks we have more quality in the squad and blames it on the coach.

The more I think about it, the more I understand why Ghotbi chose the chicken tactics.

All players in this squad were good players and they have shown when used in proper format they are very effective. Against Korea, Ghotbi’s game plan, formation and player assignments were ineffective from the start and unable to do right adjustment during half time. When so many players perform bad and lost in a game it has more to do with structure, assignment a game plan. It was a cowardice performance plan not worthy of any champion. Ghotbi failed in his final and most important act.

good player by wat standards man?
pejman nouri is good by what standards? he is playing a bottom team table of the league and was hardly ever invited to TM by any of the previous coaches even during his peak years when he was playing in the most popular club of iran and asia!
he is just an average hardworking player which have plenty of in iran.

ofcourse, its ghotbi who is responsible for playing him as starting 11 at the cost of a creative midfielder, but for gods sake pejman, do something right atleast! he was 0 in offense and absolutelye minimal in defense.

ofcourse shojaei was equally disappointing, but atleast he didnt start and was used as a sub. pejman started and played for 106 minutes which he couldnt make a simple 1-2 one touch pass to push the team forward. the koreans ran circles around him with such ease!

there is no denial of this, but just because korea has a stronger federation, strong league, stronger squad, etc means we dont have to field a balanced team?

was pejman nouri the best choice to start yesterday according to u? did he even deserve to start ahead of other players within the squad or even not invited to TM?

Iran played better in 2nd extra period because their backs were against the wall. They needed to score and S. Korea was defending to keep the score.

Iran always play better when they are down a goal or two.

Lack of, or not playing creative midfielders and relying on defensive midfielders cost us the game.

Ghotbi failed because of his defensive scheme and not using subs properly.
