If I was Carlos Queiroz , I would sign right now to coach Team Melli!

After the pretty good display by Team Melli , any aspiring coach who is looking for a challenge will definitely sign to train this lot.

Yep. This Team Melli is by no mean the minnows that many people think of. It is a team full of surprises and definitely work in progress for a top class coach to work with.

I loved what I saw from the boyz in Abu Dhabi against Arshavin and his team. Incidentally , Arshavin had hardly one shot on goal and was owned by our boyz.

Of course , the odd ever present shortcomings were there. No one is fool enough to say that this win will rock the world of football. What it proves though , is that this sport does not have hard and fast rules and 2+2 does not always equal 4 in football.

The last person I expected to score today was Reza "Bi Mokh" Khalatbary who had a really pathetic match for 90 minutes....and then the moment of sheer brilliance....a goal worthy of winning any match. What a fantastic goal....and then the douche bags gets sent of !!

Well you're either being emotional or you have a hidden agenda (or you didn't watch the game) cause you don't need to be a football expert to see that khalatbari was one of our (if not the) best player(s).

I do agree that he is a bit bi mokh, and that he always get unnecessary cards and annoys the referee in each game, but labeling his performance pathetic for the entire 90 min.......

remember that this is the football plus forum where we pretend to know more about football than the rest of our membersn

oh ps: to get back on topic, yes I do agree with your point if the Portuguese trainer wasn't convinced by this game to coach Iran, nothing else will. I

I just hope that he doesn't continue his bad streak that he had with Real and Portugal, where he messed up everything, will continue and that he doesn't live up to his defensive reputation, since it was very pleasing to see Iran playing an attacking game for once.

Iran stun Russia with late winner
        09 February 2011, 21:05

Mohammad Reza Khalatbari scored a last-minute winner then got sent off for celebrating as Iran stunned Russia 1-0 in a scrappy friendly played in the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday.

Khalatbari sprung the offside trap before evading two Russian defenders and beating goalkeeper Igor Akinfeyev with a rising shot from close range.

His joy was tempered, however, when he received a second booking and a red card for removing his shirt in celebration.

Iran's victory was watched from a VIP box by former Portugal and Real Madrid coach Carlos Queiroz who local media were reporting on Wednesday is set to become coach, replacing Afshin Ghotbi who departed to join Japanese side Shimizu S-Pulse following Iran's elimination at last month's Asian Cup.

Russia looked toothless for most of the match played inside a near-empty Sheikh Zayed stadium and defeat will add pressure on coach Dick Advocaat after many Russian soccer experts had questioned the wisdom of playing Iran in the Gulf region.

Advocaat said the match, the first between the two countries since 1985, should serve as a final test before the Russians resume their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign next month.

Russia, top of European Group B with nine points from four matches, face Armenia in Yerevan on March 26.

              Thank you.

I like to stress the point you made about the player's mental strength. It is either due to lack of confidence or over confidence. I really took an exception to the Iranian match commentator who kept repeating that Russia is way better than us , they are higher class and all that jazz. If a player hears such comments ( which is quite common) what would be his mental status thinking of this inferiority complex?

You are right , t is the society that is screwing up and has a major share of blame when it comes to the shortcoming in football. I really was tempered to pick up the home to call to the TV commentator and the end of the match to tell him...up your nose , Agha..your superior team just got beaten by our boyz

                Dear Maij,

When did I say you have a big mouth? Do not draw conclusions which aren't there.

Just like you put it so ever maturely: "people gets irritated by a some zany , preposterous , out of place comment"! This is why I was shocked as why you labeled Khalatbari's performance so poorly.

Why do you think that you have the right to say anything you want and claim them as facts and when people challenge your points of view you start by insulting the other party? This is a highly unappreciable behavior if you ask me, and I do kindly ask you to keep that in mind for future reference.

And if you missed the fact that the "hidden agenda" and the "football +" comments were nothing more than just jokes (maybe a tad sprinkled with healthy sarcasm embed in the Iranian gene pool ) I blame the written medium for it (I even added the smilies for visual effects)

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who saw that Khalatbari had quite a bad performance for practically the whole game. However, Khalatbari is one of those players whom you don't see for 90 minutes and then does something brilliantly like today in the last minute which changes the outcome of a game (like Karimi could/can). Since, after all, this was only a friendly, it would not have been strange if Khalatbari was subbed somewhere in the 2nd half and replaced by a young prospect like Sharifat.

He scored a wonderful goal though, that must be said.

ps: I have no hidden agenda's against Khalatbari As a matter of fact he's one of my fav. and definitely one of the best we have in Iran today. I just say it as I see it.
Persian Pride running through my veins!

LOL, I guess I have to watch the game again, cause after Heydari I think he was one of the better ones........

But then again I watched it with Arabian commentary......maybe that had an impact

Yes , I thought Khalatbary had a dreadful game. Apparently Babak Agha's , was watching Black and white TV in Arabic commentary hence the different viewpoint

My opinion of Khalatbary is not very complimentary. YES , he is a skillful player , has pace that very few Iranian players seem to posses , and last but not least , has guts and is not afraid to go for it.

On the negative side , he is very inconsistent , a cheat , a fall guy who drops flat on his face sniffing grass from the slightest tackles . He is undisciplined , moody and not very well behaved. I guess he is something between Ali Karimi and Khodadad Azizi , although he is not even close to Karimi (in his golden days) in style , finesse and dribbling skills. And Karimi is not a cheat.

Players like Khalatbary are useful when a team is desperate situations. But...I am not complaining as long as he score such brilliant winner ....woooowww...what a goal.

By the way, I think Mansourian and the boys deserve a big thank you for today's performance, because if Queiroz decides to take on the job this game tonight played a big role in his decision!

Queiroz wanted to wait with his final decision until after this game. Imagine we had played a dreadful boring game by parking the bus and still losing by 2 goals or so, I'm sure Queiroz' doubts would increase and he might not have accepted at all.

It's not sure yet whether he accepts the job or not, but I can't imagine a coach who's final decision partly depended on this friendly game would not have been pulled over the line after TM's performance today.

Thank you Agha Mansourian wa bacheha!

the presence of querioz in the stadium was big motivation for mansourian and the boyz cause they know querioz is not qotbi nor he is daei, he will pick and choose players base on their ability and not favoritism. and for mansourian, he could be now the first choose assistant under querioz!!! he just secure himself a place on the bench

^^ I agree with all that amin said above.

on a side note (which almost became the main topic of the thread): I think khlatbari's performance wasnt all that bad.

yes, he did have some bad moves and good ones too.
but a few of them stand out for me (let me remind y'all I didnt see min 45-53), like him robbing the ball with a nice tackle and quickly turning that into a quick counter where it almost led to a goal (if he has chaipped the bugger instead of passing it across), or the few times he switched flanks and gave the right defender a bit of hell and then came to left and did the same to this chap.
he also was full of running, which helps in starting the team defense, ... at least making a nuisance of himself for the russians trying to make a play.

so I wouldnt say he was dreadful. he was ok but nowhere near his best.
and maybe those of you who want him only as a golden sub do have a point.
maybe his energy and focus can be used better coming in late in the game. rather than starting with him , therefore allowing his quarrelsome & childish nature to earn him some cards!

but for me, the best player on the pitch was Haidari. a clear winner of M.O.M.
followed by the likes of hadadifard, ando and even hosseini & afshin (given his young age & inexperience).

                              Agha Majid,

Learn a bit of football, or some people kick you out of football+.

Anyway, this agha Reza BI Mokh, needs a bit of diciplin and manner. Oh, and learn when you are one on one with the keeper, you don't pass back to "Rahmati" for the sake of being cool.
