2-3 new Ghotbi threads again? It is amazing how some of us still want to talk about Ghotbi's coaching! And usually starts with I am not a fan of Ghotbi, or, I don't wanna defend him, or, I know he was this and that "BUT" ....
The man failed to prove he is a worthy coach no matter how many "but"s come along (speaking of it .... never mind .... ).
So here is another but: I am not saying Ghotbi was a bad coach "but":
Some confuse (or would like to confuse) a trainer and training with head coaching job. There are tons of great trainers around the globe with up-to-date excellent football education for proper training, and with scientific methods. Chances are 99% of them either won't make it to head coaching, or give a shot and fail. why?
Three factors make a coach great: Education and experience (competitive playing and coaching), Intelligence, and psychology.
Ghotbi failed with national team in ASIA every time he had a shot ...oh yeah because .... excuse 1, excuse 2 , excuse 3 ..... you can always find excuses but you can't change the outcome ...
Head coaches main job is to
- plan,
- select players and select tactic (and have his "trainer" train accordingly) in whichever order he/she selects.
- create team chemistry
- choose a staff and use them to train and prepare the team.
Then for each match
-select game plan, strategy, and tactic,
-get players ready mentally and maintain chemistry,
-and last but not least, have the intelligence to adjust during a match from subs to possible change of tactic, half-time adjustments, and other real-time decisions.
"excuses aside", this simply didn't happen when we NEEDED a good coach the most, and where we have been competitive for half a century; Asia. Therefore he "failed", no matter how long the train of excuses are. And not once, twice, but all three Asian tournaments, from easy one to hard one.
Didn't have time for WCQ? Did the time helped in Asian Cup preparation?
Didn't care much about winning WAFF? Didn't he glorified every win in "preparation" matches?
"but" we won group stage with 9 points in Asian Cup. So is this why we needed Ghotbi? To win a group stage in Asian tournament? All the hoopla around his greatness, his emperorship, his amazing work with Hidding, Advocatt, etc to win a group stage in Asia and out?
It is our federation, management, infrastructure. Didn't we have the same problem just 4-5 years ago but defeated Japan and Korea and displayed competitive football regardless?
players talent is low. Iran's talent level and offense 5 years ago was limited to 5-6 players. Now, there are at least 10-12 players to choose from: Ansarifard, Hajsafi, Shojaei, Oladi, Afshin, Khalatbari, Rezaei, Aliasgari, Rahmani, Mosalman, Meidavoodi, Dejageh, ... Yes, they are not cooked but isn't this why we needed a "good" coach? Didn't Russia match displayed a glimpse of our talent?
Debate on this can never end as anything and anyone can find excuses to satisfy damaged ego but bottom line will never change: We failed with Ghotbi in Asia again and again and again. Never won anything, and never won a critical match. And he ended his tenure with a miserable display of football in last match.
