Against Chelsea, Barcelona had the advantage of playing aginst 10 men
after Chelsea defender Del Horno was redcarded in minute 37. Barcelon
won 2-1, after Chelseas solid defence and attack ultimately broke down
late in the game: Chelsea scored in minute 59, but strikes in minute 71
and 80 caused Cleseas elimination.
Today against Arsenal it was even worse:
a middlefielder (Pires) had to be taken out because the goal keeper
Lehmann got redcarded! The outcome was pretty much the same:
Even though Arsenal scored first, again their defence broke down like
Chelsea's this time in minute 76 and 80! Looking at the type of goals,
one could argue Lehmann could have saved them had he been the keeper.
First:
The question is, wouldn't Arsenal have been better off had Lehmann let Eto score? And are our goalkeepers FULLY aware of this tradeoff, and have
this type of tradeoff been discussed?
Second:
Some of our defensive players have a bad habit of doing a sliding tackle
very frequently.
Kaebi and GolMo are two that come to my mind. Aside from the dangers
of missing the tackle and letting the attacker proceed, this can easily turn
to redcard and is not the most sound way of defending anyways. This one
is a bit tougher to rule out, but at least should be mentioned as a
last resort way of defending.
