    IRAN - UZBEKISTAN - WCQ (Nov 14th)

    FIRST HALF:

    Pretty good first half.
The team played a very organized game and the defense looked in pretty good control of their zones. Montazeri was just awesome.
Contrary to what majority of us thought, Mohamad Nouri did have a good game (even if we don’t count his legitimate goal).

Ando doesn’t seem to be at his best though and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Dehnavi or someone else taking his place midway through second half. Otherwise I would say do more of the same and continue to do what you’re doing to all the players … except take more shots. With the ball being slippery (as was shown in RGN’s shot that the keeper failed to control), it provides an edge to the shooters.

You could see the uzbeks had done their homework on us and our weaknesses too, as in set pieces and corners, they really OVER-crowded Rahmati’s 6 yard box, hoping for an unforced error or miss or ricochet. Thankfully our defense held.

As for the goal, I think now we are even and square with the uzbeks. Our legitimate goal ruled offside effectively takes out any reference to their legitimate goal in Tashkent.

    ******************

    SECOND HALF
This half was a total opposite of the first half. But what stands out above everything else is how absolutely WOEFUL substitution decisions were done!! Woeful, horrible, disastrous subs.

    1. To start with, having seen Ando was not at his best. Add to this our need to win the game and finally put distance between ourselves and the rest. And most importantly, in a game that we were in control of. Why should we lose our spine and behave so gutless to replace Mohamad Nouri (who was having a decent game), an offensive minded player with a defensive player (Pejman Nouri)? What are you scared of? What did you see in the first half to scare you into behaving like a freaking bloody mouse? That too when there is a better candidate to remove from the game (Ando)!!!

Dehnavi (or Milad Nouri) instead of Pejman Nouri would have helped our cause far far better as he would have added to the team’s offense (lets not forget this is the team that has scored only two goals in 5 games. Meaning our offense needs more help than our defense. Especially AT HOME and when we NEED TO WIN. So why remove our superiority from the first half by reducing our offense with a defensive minded player?
Hell, if you love Pejman Nouri’s game, then at least sub him for Ando. He is in the same mold at least.

    2. The second clue to this spineless defensive mindset was when Heidari was kept back and was told to be far more defensive than his usual self/game. Granted, he did well in defense. But it is evident the Uzbeks didn’t plan their goal chances for during the game and had based any hope ONLY ON SET PIECES & DEAD BALLS. So it’s not as if they were attacking in waves (like in Tashkent) and Heidari was put under tremendous pressure.
So keeping him too far from Dejagah (especially in the second half, up to the goal) meant poor Dejagah had to go it alone against 2 or 3 physical defenders and he lost quite a few balls in the process.

    • The other horrible, wasteful sub was ballerina. The bugger had one weak shot AND NOTHING ELSE! He became invisible (no surprises here as he had NOTHING to offer against the physical opponents) and we ended up playing with 10 men.

    • The goal: We had already seen Ando not at his best. And lo & behold as it was HIS MARK who escaped him and scored the goal easily. I don’t know if Ando was really ready as he WAS injured mid-week and there was talk of him missing the game. If so, it is yet another horrible decision by the coaching staff to play him. And then keeping him beyond the first half.

    • I am shocked how we are so bloody poor in taking shots and shooting! This is something that any kid would notice. So how come an international coach asking for $2 million fees doesn’t reach the same conclusion? Absolutely horrible and unacceptable.

    • I’m tempted to include the issue of Khalatbari and how we used him too. I think he would have been far more useful if he was a second half sub coming in to push and pressure the tiring uzbek defenders, instead of starting with him against tough and rough uzbek defenders who (we should have expected) man-handled him and being fresh and ready, were easy to nullify Khalatbari’s pace and impact on games.

So once again we lose (at home) because we behave like spineless mice and don’t cease on our opportunities just because we (the coaches) are too scared of losing … even when playing at home and even when we are in control of the game!!
We have to blame how we approached the game. It has nothing to do with infrastructure or foundation or … etc. and like it or not, CQ has a lot to answer for such abysmal handling of a football game.

We are out unofficially. We will go through more pain and suffering but that is what it is.
It should have not been that.

That is unrealistic expectation if we continue with Queiroz & Associates & their game plan.
Basic of football is to try to possess the ball , manage it and score with it. Our game plan is to fight so hard to possess then kick it aimlessly away ending up with opponent , then repeat that run again...

Once i read your Uni paper ( i think u did it with ur buddy in UAE ) , base on that i recall you know the stats and odds...

I apologize if it's wrong of me to ask...but WTF has Queroz done for Iran throughout this whole campaign? I see no tactical thinking, zero strategy or game plan and the same cross-your-fingers-and-hope-for-the-best kick and run game no matter who our opponent is. Surely we're versatile and knowledgable enough at the National Team level to hypothesize and create game plans specific to our opponents, no? BTW, Hi, Carlos - Uzbek defenders are tall, and strong...might want to consider playing on the ground...:-).

I'm sorry, but I see no difference between me coaching the team and Carlos - I too can lose at home against a depleted Uzbek squad. I'll tell ya though, I'd charge a fraction of what he does and pump the rest of the money into our youth programs.

          Disgraceful.
We thank and support Mr.Kamran Delan for many years of dedication and service to Iranian Football Community.

What is the format for the 3rd place play-offs? Qatar is in serious contention to qualify so they will play for max points against any team in their remaining three matches.

Faraz jaan, this team has not had competitive friendlies since Russia in 2011. Playing with Tajikistan is not enough test for team e melli ahead of an important qualifier. We should have been playing Argentina or Germany instead like in 2004.

I can't blame CQ for everything... his hands are closed and is working with what is possible. By the way Saudi today tied Argentina 0 - 0.

I agree with Doc Doom on all points, specially the issue of Khalatbari's better use as a sub, specially against a physical team.

^ forget the play offs. even if we get through the AFC play offs, it is pretty much impossible to defeat the south americans.
so if we want to reach the games, it HAS TO BE direct qualification

anyway, at least those who love DEFENSIVE football must be enjoying themselves

mate, why do you have to apologize?
it's not as if CQ is doing this for free and is doing us a "favor".
The chap is getting PAID and PAID HEFTILY (I'd add UN-deservedly too).
THE LEAST rights you have is to expect results (screw quality games or overhauling our football or ...) from him in return.

at this point I have even less respect for CQ than before.
although his off game antics also helped matters a lot. what really got my blood boiling was not his usual defensive (read gutless) mindset, but how he behaved like a trickster and con man after the lebanon loss by avoiding the quesion in the interview (saw it in 90 and is available in footballitarin.com) side stepping it all and calling a bunch of kids next to him to chant "iran, iran, iran ..."!!!
this looked so ugly to me that I was infuriated.

then the con man attaitude re-surfaced again in the latest 90 when he fished out a wrinkled flag out of his pocket (brought expressly for this) and tried to rely on patriotic sense and emotions of fans and pretended to be more Iranian than Iranians!!!

the same thing is seen in other interviews. add to this, his EMPTY promises of rejuvenating our "aging" TM and turning our football around and whatnot when he took the job. Not only he hasnt kept HIS OWN WORDS, he's gone in exactly the other direction.

after 2 years we still have an even older TM, and a team that still reverts to bezan ziresh and clueless football (as seen in our second half. the first half seems to be a FREAK UN-INTENDED ACCIDENT)!!!

I wonder what con-man antics we will see tomorrow to distract fans and his critics

I agree with most of what DD says and will add my input soon (have to step out of the house for the moment). Given that we 7 months before our next qualifier, in short we need to:

                  - Implement minor reforms to our 23 man list.
                  - Revert back to the tradition 4-4-2 system which is what we're most comfortable in (refer to last 35 minutes of the South Korea game).
                  - Hope Uzbeks draw with one of Lebanon or Qatar.

                  Detailed input to follow.

Doc, why is it impossible to beat a South American team? It surely won't be Argentina or Brazil... it will probably be Colombia or Costa Rica.

I think a lot of the problem is mental - the players rush their decisions and passes too much as the game goes on

The team shape was ok today, we started well and really only just missed that creative spark in the midfield. The play was ok until the last 20 mins when they all lost their heads and pumped the ball into the box , I think we did ok moving the ball quickly and accurately but lacked the incisive final pass.

I am afraid you may be right.

the way I see it, now, uzbeks have the upper hand and it wont get any easier for us ... even if we break tradition and start scoring goals (which by itself, under gutless coaches is pretty much improbable).

1- uzbeks have two easier HOME games. while we still have to travel to qatar.

2- and mind you, we know AFC and FIFA will heavily back qatar to make it to the games before they actually host it. so dont expect any favors from refs in that game. in fact qatar will really get the boost from refs now that they do have a realistic chance. even for the 3rd place play off.

3- Now lets say lady luck and refs and X and Y will somehow uzbeks falter in one of their games. we still have to WIN. that means we have to SCORE GOALS. that means we have to ATTACK (unless CQ's plans are based on a bunch of own-goals by the opponents)
we have scored TWO goals in FIVE games. what are our chances to score so many goals IN QATAR & IN SEOUL?

4- so if Uzbeks win their home games and falter in their third. and maybe we somehow, by hook or crook win two games and be equal to their points.
even then, given that they have scored more goals, it may come down to goal difference or even number of goals scored. even then, we'll be behind them!!!

so now you see how defensive football comes to bite us in the arse? I'm looking at all of you fans of defensive football and keep saying defense wins it for us.
the funny thing is the same people were saying the same in the last WCQ's 4 years back! even when we failed simply because we didnt score goals and had too many draws (when we needed to win games)!
                          ridiculous.

I think the second substitution was a poor one - we lost what little creative passing we had in midfield

We sorely missed Jabbari today and I don't think I am being too dramatic in suggesting that his injury could have been decisive in both this game and the Lebanon away game
