    WCQ; Iran - Lebanon - 6/11/2013

    FIRST HALF:

    Edit:
I watched the game (Thanks to the hard work by Kamran and nariman and the rest of multimedia staff) and now, I can safely comment on the whole game.

Starting line: Given CQ’s cautious nature, I guess this line up was to be expected. Well, he HAD TO make some adjustment from his ultra defensive selection against Qatar, as now we were playing a much weaker team and at home. So in CQ’s mind only 1 change was justified (bringing in another player who can score goals; Khalatbari, to increase our chances of scoring).

Lol. The Lebanese keeper praying to the goal posts. Why does HIM doing this seem so much more than just a usual gesture done by goalkeepers of the world? Hehehe

What I have noticed and vehemently approve is nowadays we see less bezan ziresh and ala-bakhtaki lobs from defense. I see Ando or Nekounam going deep to receive balls from defenders to build up plays which is a massive improvement in our team movement.

More turnovers and loss of balls from Shojaei, while Heidari sweeps up after him and makes the perfect low cross to RGN, whose header misses the mark. But great chance that shows RGN has adapted to TM perfectly well and this shows his intelligence. Now, if only he could improve his strike rate compared to the number of chances he gets. But his style and technique leaves very little to critic.
My only regret is he shd have someone playing closer or parallel to him to feed off or pair up laterally. Alas …!

(I wish shojaei’s fans do watch this game again to understand what we talk about and how he constantly loses the balls that shd not )

Ooofff. In the middle of the pitch a Lebanese player is shot, most probably by a bazooka sniper among the crowd. Poor thing looks like to have been mortally wounded. … no … wait … he gets up and … 1, 2, 3, 4, … all limbs are in place. Nevermind. Carry on.

Khiabani with his usual irritating and mind numbing nonsense that warrants a kick to the TV speakers to shut him up. If only we could bill him for it!

Ahmadi looks to be settling in the team. Yes, he is not a fantastic player and has his own weaknesses. But who IS? Even Rahmati has his own weaknesses. At least, Ahmadi’s weaknesses are not as evident or well known to asia as Rahmati’s.

More snipers shooting at poor, hapless Lebanese players who have never experienced any sort of violence in their delicate lives! … oh wait … hezbullah … . nevermind. Anyway, this chap seems to have been run over by a tank or a submarine or something! I feel for him.

Another plucky and gritty game by Heidari in both defense and offense. He deserves to play in Europe (far more than some ppl who are already in Europe )

Lovely combo from Heidari, Khalatbari and finally to RGN, who misses the ball by inches. Heidari cutting in is making the Lebanese defenders confused as they don’t know how to handle and defend against him.

Shojaei seems to be in cohorts with the snipers in the crowd, as he targets the family jewels of the hapless Lebanese defender, who may now, never have any children to help fight world Zionism

    - But my anger at seeing all zeroes on the score-board didn’t last long as I saw Khalatbari do one of his weaving runs and slot the ball outside the keeper’s reach. This is what you get when you add a proper goal scorer to the team instead of filling it with mere midfielders who rarely score. Khalatbari’s addition to the Qatar game roster was a positive move. Loved the give and go between Jabbari and him. Hope we see more of such moves.

    - And then, to my surprise we took a corner kick quickly (usually we waste time allowing for opponents to take their shape) and among the 5 free Iranian players, Nekounam thundered his header into the goal. simply loved the power he generated in his header.

    - In the mean time, Shojaei tries to dribble and to no surprise hands over the ball! But this has happened so often and so many times that it provides absolutely no shock to me. But hey, he plays in la liga … right?

    - The lebanese seem very chaotic and inorganized. With a little more focus and attention, we can add 1-2 more goals and breath easy for a while.

    - seeing how the lebanese keeper collects all low crosses from flanks, I think it is a good option if one of our strikers actually goes for the near post to intercept or deflect these balls BEFORE it reaches the keeper. That way, a deflection or a simple tap or re-direction of the ball could end up in the goal

    SECOND HALF:

    - Lovely goal from RGN who chose the near angle. He thoroughly deserves this goal. if he keeps his nerves in check I am sure he can add to it. He’s been very lively, along with Khalatbari.

    - Shojaei misses a sitter. Again, it doesn’t surprise me. What would surprise me is if he actually does something right !

    - Big chance off a combo of Khalatbari and RGN and lovely one touch shot by RGN. Shows his class. This was after a big scare in front of our goal where Matar was left uncovered. Lets keep the focus guys

    - The team passes the ball around very well. But Shojaei’s aiming the stadium clock. Hey maybe in la liga the goals are kept at that height. We cant question a la liga player!!! Right?

    - Some lovely Heidari crosses and Nekounam misses the header. But the intent is positive as we go searching for more goals

    - A penalty on Khalatbari is not called! Espn commentators also admitted it. On replay it is a clear foul. Shame the ref didn’t see it from mere yards in front of him.

    - It is these idiotic back heel and fancy shit they try when ****y that get on my nerves. Simple pass would do it. But this insistence on flashy plays and “looking good” is the bane of our football!

    - Now pace seems to be the objective as Mosalman and Rezaei come in. But neither produce anything worthwhile. We’re playing too harried and have lost all focus and mental shape/ discipline!

    - Rezaei has been poor losing the ball countless times!!! Too hurried? Not so calm? Whatever the cause, he just didn’t do himself any favors and unless he gets his shit together, he may not figure in Korea. But I put this on the silly issue of our players trying too hard to get on the score sheet. Calmer nerves would have fared better.

    - We are sacrificing more goals in favor of fancy, looking unnecessary plays!!! Too c0cky

    - Credit to Khalatbari for trying as hard as ever though the entire game. Nothing surprising.

    - RGN must change his shoes. He’s slipped many times during the game!

    - And out of nowhere Nekunam scores. Hahaha lovely shot placement. Welcome to the Nekounam show. He’s been heading, shooting, … owning the match. Easily the M.O.M.

    - CQ going ballistic over the touchline. Great to see he demands more goals. But where was all this urgency earlier in the campaign? What’s happened to him in the past week or so? Either way, I am happy he demands more.

    BOTTOMLINE

I liked how the team played and this could well be one of the better games by TM in the past 10 years. Their passing was very nice. But I wont allow this to cloud my judgment as the opponent was a third rate Asian minnow.

However, the sequence of passes on several occasions and the intent on correct passing and one touch passing shows they have improved. If only they could sustain such things for longer periods, then we’d be a very formidable team for anyone.

I also am satisfied with the scoreline, although with a little more focus, we could have finished the game with 7-0 or more. But this 4 goals difference between us and Uzbeks gives us a very good fighting chance as I doubt the Uzbeks can score 4 goals against Qatar. Which means a draw in Seoul would be enough and extremely probable as even Korea needs only 1 point to secure their WC.

You agenda against Shojaei is highly annoying and just hurting your own reputation.

I'm not going to lie Martin jan but I can see how DD is frustrated with Shojaei. While he capable of slowing down the tempo of the game, many of his passes and real-time decisions tend to be below satisfactory (especially when comparing him with our other Euro-based players). Today, Nekounam's display reminded us why he's one of the best in Iran and why he was fixed for years in Spain; with Shojaei, I've yet to see a series of sublime performances that justify his fixed position in our team.

In fact not only did Shojaei miss a goal opportunity today, his slow thinking and tendency to dribble past players cost us a very good opportunity against S. Korea in Seoul during the 2010 qualifiers.

Didn't see the game today (wish I did from the sounds of it)...but it's pretty simple from here on out:

        We win -> we're 100% through
We tie -> we're 99% through (...in a non-cheating world, anyway - at the end of the day, you just can't bet on Qatar doing us any favours)
        We lose -> we're 99% out.

Now, given the comments by Korea's coach today, I'm pretty nervous about our next game but let it be used as fuel to fight harder than ever.

Final thought - looking back now...you just can't help but curl up into a ball & cry...:

1-0 loss against Uzbekistan at home
0-0 tie against Qatar at home
        1-0 loss to Lebanon away

Count 'em up & that's 8 easy points we lost...how much easier could it have been? Why must it always come down to a heart attack? Why is it always the final game against a tough opponent? Why can't it just go as planned? To quote Balotelli, "Why Always Me?".
We thank and support Mr.Kamran Delan for many years of dedication and service to Iranian Football Community.

right, right ... becoz he did such a splendid job

thanks for "worrying" about my reputation. but I think given your views, you have far more important things to worry about

buddy, there is NO agenda here. I only put all his acts (plus and minus) in a balance and unfortunately for him, it comes up negative.
Now in some minds, an unrelated factor (la liga) comes into play which affects this balance, but to me it is a non-issue as I concentrate on what he does on the pitch in a game, no matter where he lives or what his name is or how he looks.
if it is so hard for you to swallow, then you have a choice of not reading. But if you do read and then get frustrated and angry, then it is YOUR fault

such are the woes of "name victims".

just to remind you, shojaei promised a lot, back in 06-07 and even 08. IJ above correctly said he was deemed as a natural replacement for karimi. But after 4-5 years at la liga he has shown he hasnt made the necessary improvements to his game.
Any player given this amount of opportunity at the world's top league would have done tremendous adjustments and improvements to what he already had.

yes, his crosses have imporved which is good news. and maybe his positioning and general attitude in facing big opponents or .... He is also quite spirited & motivated, which is a great thing. but there are a lot of things that are not going in his favor

1- shojaei, STILL doesnt know how to tackle or make a challenge without fouling the mark.

2- He STILL doesnt know when and WHERE to challenge or dribble as he has put TM in jeopardy whenever he does it near our box.

3- he STILL hasnt improved his heading ability and cant head the ball to save his life.

4- aside from these things that he had the chance to fix, he is not a very fast and pacy player and that works against him in today's football.

5- he also has a low upper body strength which means in physical challenges, he most often comes second (as is evident in the games).

6- then we have his temper!

the fact that he knows how to slow down the game and kill the momentum is a double edged sword. and must be used wisely. as I always say, there is a purpose for everything and you cant use things haphazardly.
he can be very useful in games we are ahead and need to kill the time and slow down the momentum. draw a few fouls in opponents' half and either waste some more time or do something with the resultant freekick.
so he has very limited use.

Now, if he was a quicker player or a stronger one, or someone who could defend, or .... then you would have a case. but he isnt, so you dont.
now let go of the irrelevant tag of "la liga" and for once close your mind to a player's name and club and ONLY concentrate on his actual performance

^ I just cant help but wonder what if instead of shojaei, that great opportunity of playing in la liga for 4-5 years, was given to a player like Jabbari or even Md Nouri.
would/wouldnt they have made more progress than what shojaei did?

our players dont get such fantastic opportunities often. so when they do, they must milk it as much as possible and learn, adjust, improve and perfect their game as much as they possibly can.

I fear Shojaei simply didnt milk it (except fans milking the la liga to justify his starting role at TM, of course!!!!)

No doubt Carlos is very found of this guy..! I think mostly cause we are short of seasoned replacement for him, until today that KB proved himself somewhat worthy ..! Other options are either young & inexperienced,( mosalmon) out of form (hadadifar)inconsistent (nouri), crap quality(GRRezaie) injured (ashkan) or retired (AK8)..!
But Massoud is indeed a major drag on our quick passing game by holding the damn ball too long , slow on counters & getting back on D, out of form clearly obvious after 60th minute..! In fact besides experience he's got nothing on oladi as far as I'm concerned ..!
Im afraid he will yet again get the starting nod @ SK..! He could come in handy early on to help us hold the ball up in MF & win some set pieces from fouls & help relieve pressure on our D ..!
Hopefully he will get subbed sooner than the last couple games....! Ideally for Askan..!??

I followed DD's posts last week, and I'm as clueless as he is as to why he played for so long last match, and why he started today? One possible answer is that CQ simply prefers players with higher tactical discipline and an understanding of the modern passing game. Naturally playing in la liga will automatically give you an edge compared to your peers playing in the PGL, but at this point in the competition the stakes are just too high. With the scary amount of turnovers he's costing the team, we may have to rely on luck for a team like Korea to not punish us with a free ball handed to them. I used to think that masoud will eventually step up and fill Karimi's place in TM, but he is sadly too inconsistent. At the end of the day, it all comes down to CQ and what he sees in this kid.

DD I pretty much completely agree with you, and although I usually think you are being to harsh on shojaei, he was worse today, and I now understand your frustrations, I have also been upset that CQ didnt give khalatbari more starts, in my opinion, khalatbari is currently one of our top creative and dangerous players, if you noticed today he was constantly running from midfield to forward line and acting like a passing link for the midfield line, he also showed why hes so dangerous in his goal, really good vision, better run, and a really cool finish ( which is not often seen in iran)
RGN had a nice goal and he ran a lot, however he needs to adjust his placement on headers.... they always go wide...
Heydari was brilliant today and was a great link of the whole team

Nekounam and Teymourian were constantly running back to the defensive line to properly distribute the ball

Nekounam seems to be back in much better form, he was running a lot more, his passing was fantastic, and his goals were both beautiful.

Im also very glad we avoided all cards today, we should have a full squad vs korea, and like gucci said, we must go for a win!

there was a little talk of the subs performing poorly in the game, so I watched the second half again and I must correct those who think ALL subs played badly.

yes, Rezaei was god-awful and lost balls so often as if he was playing football for the first time in his life.

hajsafi was more or less average and didnt have enough time to show anything. not his fault.

But Mosalman actually played quite well. except one loss of ball, the rest of his moves, passes, cross, ... were all pretty good. he joined in defense as well as attack, tried to create chances for RGN and another player, had a couple of nice one-twos, .. . I would actually say, given his age and probably his first official seniors game in a very important match, he did himself a lot of favors.
a nod to those who thought playing younger players is not a good decision
