every WC they were allowed to compete. After the WWII, they were not allowed for one edition.

But now that Holland can't win it (don't understand why Van Gaal didn't bring the specialist keeper instead of tyro useless Huntelaar), for the sake of valuing greatness in the face of humility, I hope Messi wins it. Despite my hatred for Argentina. If for nothing else, to at least put a rest to all the silly comparisons of him and that drug addicted, steroid junkie, megalomaniac cheater maradona.
The only thing that fool's fans keep throwing at Messi is lack of a WC trophy. With a win, they all can shut their foolish mouths once and for all and concede the sheer genius and mastery of a player who doesn't behave like a freaking prima donna.

Doc, Van Gaal had to replace the unfit van Persie with Huntelaar, that is why he did not have more subs to bring in Krul for the shoot out. I think Holland's bigger mistake was picking the wrong person to take the first spot kick. They should have instead designated Arjen or Huntelaar for the first PK.

No team other than Argentina has managed to win two back to back PK shoot outs in history of the World Cup... They did that in 1990 when they beat Yugoslavia and Italy to reach the final. Holland should have finished the job before the match was over but did not seem to have enough gas in the tank.

        That wasn't Gerd Mueller!

That was "Just Fontaine" of France, who scored the record of 13 goals at 1958 world cup!

Gerd Mueller scored in total 14 goals in two world cups, 10 goals at 1970 WC and 4 goals at 1974 WC!

Records are good, but they still have to win the final to match Italy with 4 titles.

True. If we go by titles won and amount of WC participation, Brazil are the winners.
But point is the amount of records Germany has broken in FIFA history make them easily the most consistent and successful team at FIFA World Cups.
No other nation has reached the final of WC as much as Germany.
No other nation ever reached the semi finals, quarter finals, total goals ever scored, total consecutive semi finals etc etc as much as Germany.
these are some amazing stats, that are often not mentioned or thought about... wanted to put them in one thread....

Same sort of comparisons go between Iran and Japan... we had three Asian Cup title wins while Japan had none until 1992. Since then they have become the four-time winners, while Iran has been sadly stalled on three.

Edit post the final game... you can add to Germany's record: The first European side to win the World Cup on the American continent. (Their first as a united country!)

                      amazing, isn't it?

                      Now after the WC 2014,
Germany scored a record of 224 goals at WCs.
Germany also reached the final of WC a record of 8 times, wining 4 and losing 4.
i.e. Germany is a 4 time World Champion and 4 time Vice World Champion!

thanks. Edited: I forgot to mention Schwarzenbeck on my initial list.
Guenther netzer and Overath had an internal competition as both played in the same position as playmakers. So Helmut Schoen let Guenther Netzer to be the playmaker in Euro 1972, which Germany won, and in return benched him and let Wolfgang Overath to be the playmaker for WC 1974, which Germany also won!
What a luxury of choice for the coach Helmut Schoen!

also thanks for the good article.
One thing I want to add is that yes Germany invested decisevely in youth programmes, but also one reason for their success, going back to Franz Beckenbauer days till now, has to do with German football mentality, which is "anti super hero" and "pro team unit"!
While Germany had all the great names such as Netzer, Gerd Mueller, Beckenbauer, etc etc... you never saw anyone to shine out from the system, as they all had specific duties in their team system, which they all fullfilled perfectly! As the German coaches always say: "The star is the team! Win united, lose united, always as a team".
And indeed we could see in 2014 too, no one shined out of the system, but everyone performed his specific duty to perfection.
This has always been the German way of the game.

While we may never reach the level that they have, I think the most important aspect of their federation is the youth programs they have everywhere. Added to that the limit for teams to purchase foreign players (I don't remember if that's been changed to EU and non-EU in which case it's ridiculous), and you have a solid structure for building local talent, something that we strongly need.

Also noteworthy though, in comparison to a lot of other top-tier (read: rich) federations, they have players in all leagues of the world, not just their own. Personally I think this is something that Italy, Spain and England severely lack.

Ah, maybe one day we'll have a structured system in Iran. No more expensive foreign purchases, no diopoly of teams, less poaching from big teams, and more focus on small steps -> see Asian Champions League.
