Iran could have made it two in a row in 2002. Croatian Miroslav Blazevic was in charge of the National Team and he in fact, did prepare a strong team for the tournament, but a shocking defeat in the last match against Bahrain denied Iran a direct birth in the finals. Iran went on to beat UAE and hoped for a repeat playoff victory, this time against Ireland. The strong Irish side won 2-0 at home. Despite winning 1-0, Iran did not do enough in the second leg as their quest for the 2002 World Cup ended bitterly at the Azadi stadium. In total, Iran played 14 matches, winning 9, losing 2, drawing 3, scoring 36 goals and conceding 9.
In the 2002 World Cup, South Korea reached the World Cup semifinals and finished fourth, beating teams like Italy and Spain on the way. Japan also made it to the second round but China and Saudi Arabia suffered 6 defeats and were knocked out at the group stages.
