Congrats to Iran today on their victory against Wales.

It was lunchtime in Ireland. I got lots of funny looks, when I was cheering loudly when you scored the first goal and the second goal.

I met many Iranian fans in St Petersburg in 2018, I sadly missed the game because we were delayed at the border.

However my son and I enjoyed singing, drinking (sprite and fanta only for all of us), chatting and taking photos with the many fans.
It was our first night in Russia and Iranian fans joy made it a great evening.

Fans were a credit to Iran in 2018 and also in 2022, one day I will visit to enjoy your hospitality.

I went to the pub close to lansdowne road before the 2001 match, met the irish supporters association chief and gave him some practical advice about how to get booze in Iran haha. Good times

If Iran wins they will go through, if they draw then it becomes dependent on Wales v England but still likely.

However the right to go through is decided on Points (as you would expect), Goal difference, Head to Head and ultimately number of yellows reds etc.

So here are the permutations
Iran lose and Wales win 1-0, USA and England go through. USA 5 Pts, England 4pts (+3 goals), Wales 4pts (-1 goals) Iran 3 points (-2 goals).
Wales would need to win 4-0 against England to deprive them but potentially England could still lose 4-0 and go through.
BUT Iran v USA 0-0 would mean England 4pts (0 goals), Wales 4pts (+2 goals),Iran 4 pts (-2 goals) USA 3 points.

Wales might beat England because it will be emotional as they have underperformed badly at this tournament. Forget anybody who tells you that because they are of same country, it is very personal and nothing better they would like than knocking England out.

Ultimately if Iran beat USA then they go through but pretty likely with a draw as do not see Wales beating England by more than a goal.
