I appreciate CQ, but it's time to move on. I wish we could've had at least one big win for him, but that's life.

Time to build to WC 2026 and that starts with AC22. Any player over 27 needs to be cut outside of Taremi. That leaves us with a core 6 or 7 players. Then fill in the rest with players no older than 22 (to ensure they're a good age for the next two WCs!).

We can do what USA did. Build young. Turn over the team to an Iranian coach who understands football, whether it's Nekounam or Mahdavikia. And let's go!

im surprised most people think the team will stay together. after disgusting reception by iranian people and all the hate directed at the players, i would say 99% of the team will retire from international play. not to mention for even some of the younger players this was 2nd world cup already. mark my words

And fill the rest whit new players that is younger and promising.

You can't win games parking the bus IMHO, period! Why even use Azmoun in the first half if that's what he was planning to do?

And how many times have we come back from a goal down under CQ to win the game?!

It's not that we didn't or can't score goals. It's that we didn't even create chances in the 1st half. And very little in the 2nd half because we were mentally broken. We had no game plan at all, for the entire game.

We played well against Wales. It was neither offensive nor defensive but a very balanced approach. Even when we didn't score those chances you could smell there was a goal coming, until the very end.

Last night, we could have played another 300 minutes and wouldn't have scored.

This! CQ never has a plan b. If you press and break the defensive strategy you are almost guaranteed a win...at worst a tie.

He also waited far too long to make changes. He should have seen his first half lineup was not working but he doesn't read the game once conceding. He becomes even more stubborn and rigid. I believe his tactics are too well known, too outdated, and far too rigid. I prefer anybody over him. I guarantee if we have him for AC Vietnam and Cambodia will look like Brazil with his game planning.

If we played the way we did the last 15-20 minutes the whole second half we probably would have won, but TM was too defensive the whole time.

My wife and I watched the game in the stadium. Here are some observations:

1. It seemed like our team was instructed to sit back and absorb the pressure. They were not attacking at all even though they had great chances they would kick the ball back to the opposing team. This shows that the ultimate goal was to draw. It made us nervous from the minute one because the probability of scoring increases with every allowed attack from the other side. As the saying goes if your aim is to draw you might end up losing, but if your aim is to win you may end up drawing. The former applies to Team Melli's approach.

2. The American team was young and fast paced. Our players could not keep up with them. Americans were much better organized in the mid-field, and the wings with a 96% pass completion rate. (Our's was 74% as per the stadium stats shown at half-time). Especially our wingers were slow and their passes were not accurate. It was a mistake to not bring young players in order to balance experience with stamina.

3. In the first half our teams strategy should have been in a way that they aim for a goal and then sit back and defend. The sad part is that this is an obvious way to play and would have been quite successful. This is on the coach entirely. They had no motivation for a win in the first half in fact hesitated when they could have scored. This made them tired and the other young/energetic team took advantage of this situation.

4. C.Q. is a great coach no doubt. However he seems to have old school mentality and it didn't help that he only had the team for about 3 months to prep which is not enough compared to other coaches who are with a team prepping for years. But after the previous 2 games, being defensive was not as successful as seen by the Wales game. He is stubborn and that is not a good sign.

5. Overall it was a great game and the players did what they were told so we can't blame them too much.

6. Out of all of the fan base that we observed including Mexico and Argentina, team Melli fans were the strongest, and loudest. If there was a cup for fan enthusiasm it would go to us.

The right corner back was responsible for the blown coverage. His bad. Why Cheshmi did not play in the 2nd half? Afterall, he is a hero in TM history, now.

I just saw the various running stats for the World Cup to date. 2/3 Americans in the top 10 of each subcategory. The physical condition of this American team, despite being undersized, is really underestimated and overlooked by all.
Terrible style of football for us to play against.

I’m interested to know who you think should have been our coach. What tactics he should have set out? How they would have approached each game differently.

I think CQ got it wrong against England, Wales game was a perfect set up and the team looked confident and played that way too.
USA he used a similar set up, we looked composed for about the first 10 minutes and then I noticed the attack when Mohammadi was on the counter he stopped running and played the ball back and that is when our game changed. We started to lose the ball, our passing was not great and the American high press started to work and we weren’t good enough to play through it.
Then i noticed in the first half that with Beiro taking a goal kick he looked to pass it out from the back and CQ was going mad on the sidelines asking the defence to push up and for him to kick it long. They didn’t do this and we ended up giving the ball straight back to them and not taking advantage of the high defensive line that the Americans had. When we did play the ball over the top the quality was not there and also Azmoun was not fit enough to even run for the ball. Taremi was playing deeper and so we couldn’t take advantage of having him further forward.
He made a lot of runs to help out the defence and midfield who kept losing the ball which turned him out. We saw how tired he was in second half (I think also he has played a lot for Porto and not been rested).
I think from beginning CQ should have played Taremi as striker and either Ansarifard or Ghoddos behind him and then looked to bring Azmoun as sub if needed, an error was made there.
I could see what CQ tactics were but the team didn’t play it out and then looked too tired to hit back.
What do you think should have been done differently?

The main problem here is that we don’t have players that are athletic at the elite world class level …

…we don’t have 22 players that you can say are athletes that are athletic enough to play 3 Intense games over a 12 day period..

….. at that world-class elite level , running sprinting endurance .


just forget to coach right now , forget CQ why is that why don’t we have any athletic players that are ready? forget the coach forget CQ, is that his fault???

why was the team in a situation where mohebi and gayhedi probably the two most talented technical offensive abilities we have were completely out of shape , Four months into probably the biggest tournament of their lives why why???

Is that CQ fault ?

Some people are saying that Skocic team would have done better but Skocic’s team would’ve lost 6-0 all three games.

The reality is when CQ did the physical assessment of all the players that he invited to the camp , on everything he gave them then multiple times to prove themselves, but again not a single one of them was fit enough, so he couldn’t take them , he took the fittest most ready physical players that were available these were the best players this was the best team we had.

peoples were saying that the group was easy Wale, US and England weak group but why?

All these teams have better prepared athletes than us they were stronger faster more endurance playing at a higher level of competition and league games so we were the weakest team in the group just the fact that we were able to get a win and were a tie away, one go away From going to the second round is a very big achievement!

The reality is if we want the team to do really well in the World Cup you need to either during the World Cup year shut the league down and let the coach have the team for at least eight months before the tournaments so we can fully prepare these players or have at least 22 players play in Europe consistently before the tournaments start so we can pull these players and have a decent shot…


Players from the Iranian league are 6 to 8 months away from even being in shape to play in the World Cup If if if , they are even talented enough to be on the World Cup roster team,

It all goes back to the league and the level and Quality of football the majority of our players play at.

the team that narrowly beat us yesterday was a team that had players playing at this level , did the USA coach have to worry about them being fit , no he didn’t ,,, all he had to do was give the tactics… they didn’t have to worry about anything other than to come and play


the fans were against our team the government was against our team , the media was against the team all the shit the said about this team , ppl cheering in Iran when the team was scored on, forget the political situation for a second , but why against this team , the political situation was tense , they had the worst perpetration and missed 4 friendly game cycle in June ……so much has happened to this team and still they were 1 goal away from going to the round of 16 ??????

Did I like the way CQ played with his tactics absolutely , do I feel like CQ is the best coach for us based on everything i see now , absolutely not ,I wanted us to be more offensive I want us to be more attacking I wanted us to play more open , free without being so scared of the opponent’s

I would like us to sit down and make deep decisions I think the biggest one should be changing the way the league(IPL) is run , you know we need to have a better standard in the league a much better standard in the league. zz0.mtikj8hh56nzz
