the guy wasn't perfect - so, so many of his decisions i strongly disagreed with. he made me really angry at times. this last world cup i hated him for ignoring the political turmoil in our country, something 100 times more important than toop bazi. He is no angel

but he took over over our football when it was an absolute shambles with no future, when our talent was going down the drain from so many perspectives - he built something, he got our players striving for europe, he got out players IN europe, and he got our players INTO europe.

he taught us professionalism, he even got one of the best psychology-based coaches in the world for one tournament, (although in the end it didn't do much, thanks Kanaani and co)

More than anything, he gave me the only happy moments as a TM fan that I have had over the last four decades, bar Iran vs USA.

So he's no angel, he's a bit of a prick, he's an asshole sure, but he is so, so much better than anything else imaginable in the current Iran, in the current Islamic Republic of Iran, and anything else is pure fantasy.

he is the best thing to have happened to our football in these circumstances.

at some point, the penny will drop with some of you who disagree, for others it never will. that's fine. that's life. no worries....

      You could question both.
      1. PEC
      2. 2 straight wc apparences.

As DR wrote, I agree with that he did the best possible under current circumstances.

Let's first agree that I think CQ was a better coach than all the ones we had recently (on paper atleast). So no need to discuss that.

For me, what I don't highly agree with is the fact that he CHANGED our football. Right now I don't see anything CHANGED compared to 20 years ago.., we also during the 98 era had a lot of legionaires and we also don't at this very moment have any flood of new ones.

I agree with the fact that it's not a coach's responsibility to structurally change things, however when you say he did change thinks, I'm wondering what exactly (meaning comparing prior to post, not during).

Regarding back to back WC, this has been discussed many times.. But during his spell it was easier to qualify for WC as Asia had more spots.
in fact, the only time we didn't qualify when since the 4.5 spots is 2010. So back to back qualification was not, what I would say, unimaginable for us. Especially as we again qualified after that with a coach had 0 experience at international level.

In 2002, AFC also had 4.5 spots at the World cup. 2 of them were taken by Korea/Japan as hosts. In 2002, you did not even have Australia in AFC. So the only barrier we had was one of Saudi and China. Sure, AFC did us dirty because they pushed China to qualify but tying Bahrain and Thailand 0-0 were unforgivable mistakes. Before 1998 it was 20 years since our last world cup, so the record did not appear that great. Qualifying to 1998 originally was an exception. The World cup in 2006 felt like a big opportunity(we wasted) because we started to get some regularity in the WC.

CQ's win has made waves around the world. Still quite remarkable how under him we bagged 1-0 win against Morocco, 0-0 against Nigeria, 2-0 against Wales and 1-1 against Portugal.

And very slim losses against Spain, Argentina and the US. I mean think of those results in the context of Iran's situation.

I appreciate all that CQ did for our soccer, but come on people, let it go. Him moving on is a blessing for us, we need a change. Some of you worship the ground this guy walks on, I would want nothing to do with that "win" last night. Granted, he's got NO PLAYERS playing outside of Qatar on that team, but still...
we needed a change ? maybe ..... but a change to GN ?? is that a step forward ? a coach who would not be hired anywhere outside of IR territory, is coaching a team with players like Azmoun and Taremi, exposed to modern football. What value does GN offer to the current NT ?

                  Exactly this.

Another coach does not even come close to this record for Iran.

And if CQ stayed with us after Asian Cup 2019, we would’ve 1000% at least tied USA and gone to the 2nd round for the first time in our history.

The guy not only delivered results, but helped DEVELOP our players, scouted for talent, and increased our depth.

I think many people severely underestimate just how much of a wizard the coach of TM needs to be with our current circumstances.

^and HE WAS LOVED by the fans and returned that love every chance he got. Can you even imagine the same Rock Star reception every time he arrived at the airport for the likes of GN, Branko, Skocic, etc?

If it was luck, at some point it would run out. He still keeps getting great results which shows obviously he's doing something very right
