So far uzbekistan and Korea are the standouts. Although in fairness Qatar is a much better opponent than syria or oman, especially with a good foreign coach as they always make sure to have.
TM while creating many chances not only failed to convert but often made some really poor decisions in final third. I hope khore bazi + bad decision making can be stamped out by the coaching staff, or maybe just some first game nerves. Korean execution in final third was much cleaner in comparison, releasing ball at the right moments consistently.
Our plus points in the first game were the back 4, two solid DMs in front, and in general high physical level from all our players. Hazbavi looks destined for TM and already dealt with very solid caliber CFs in mens football, see Marega last week. Kor from physical perspective is also very impressive. Both are very quick too, something that has been a bit of an issue for our CBs historically. The selected MOTM from the first game was actually our DM, Torabi. He did his job shielding the back 4, playing smart and quick in possession. Another who can cover ground well, problem for Iranian CM/DM in recent years. Marfavi has highlighted him recently, saying he has many parallels to Karim Bagheri, both are from Tabriz.
Out of possession as a team Marfavi has organized them very well, and gotten the front players to bust their ass off the ball. Ghorbani and Eslamtalab in particular, although maybe it wasnt their night on offensive end made sure to always track back/be the first guys to initiate the press.
In a competition that starts with 16 teams, another win vs Australia on Saturday would be huge and guarantee progression to next round.
Winner of our group plays runner up in group A (likely Uzbekistan or Iraq), and winner of their group plays our group's runner up. Victory in that one off match will seal qualification to the world cup this summer. As CF saharkhizan said yesterday after the win, every match is a final in this competition, no room for error.
