Anyone grounded in reality knows we are not among the top 2-3 favorites. Saudi, Japan, SK all have a much stronger crop of league players, PGPL is not on their levels and also their management and players have the experience of winning continental trophies both at the national, youth and club levels…..we simply do not have that. To make matters worse, we have a guy at the helm who does not have the ability to tactically outclass any of the coaches from those other nations as well.

the only thing giving us some glimmer of hope is the form of some of our legionnaires like Hajsafi and JB and hoping that leading up to the cup Azmoun, Taremi, Saman (hopefully he gets to a good club), allahyar, etc. can join them in that level. We need tip top form from each of them going into the tournament

I hope GN is in the books studying SK's past year of matches 24-7. Historically we do not do well against Korea in tournaments, going off our 2007 loss and 2011 loss. The tournament setting is a different environment, high nerves, do or die mentality. The only period where we did fine against Korea was with CQ at the helm and that is done.

It's up to GN. At the moment, I personally don't see him rising up to the occasion against top Asian teams like Japan and Korea who play modern football on par with Latin America's top squads (just look at Korea's recent friendly matches). Kind of similar to Sko tactically but with better player management. I think a lot of our success will purely rely on star performances and that's if they are in good form come January.

After the WC-goal he has really upped his game. He’s bossing the midfield with clever passes, exactly what we need. Mehri has the speed to back him up.

Based on WC performance, Ramin, Mehdi and Ehsan are fixed players. All three have also shined since WC too. It is everyone else that is expendable.

Your selection is older and there is no speed, no youth and no surprise.

Does Gholi still belong? Is Ezatollahi really that good anymore? Torabi over Ghoddos?

What about Hosseinzadeh? What about Sayadmanesh? What about Hazbavi? Zahedi? Salmani? Khodabandehloo?

You go to battle with the squad you have...it's the physical and mental preparation that wins tournaments.

Semi Final would be a fantastic outcome - quarter final is OK and final would be well above my expectations.

The gap between the squad depths are vaster than before, especially with a team like Japan which has so many players no way near their starting line up tearing it up in good Europen clubs. The other Asian sides now have more balance than I've seen for a while, whereas we have hardly any fit central midfielders or DMs.

But preparation and luck can always have a role

Hajsafi should be fighting for LB position.
Ezatollahi is not good enough anymore.
Gholizadeh as a sub last 20 min.
Kanaani is good at defending but plays way too many longballs in our buildup play.

Gap between ourselves and other countries is the highest it has been but the semi final is definitely possible if all of our players are on their best form as you say.

People are optimistic because of the brackets.

if the semi is possible (which I think it is. comes down to a one off game vs SK who our record against is quite good), then final itself is possible surely since the Semi (if everything goes as expected) would be between the winner of Qatar and Uzbekistan...
