We are our own worst enemy. Even if we win in a dominant fashion until the quarters, we will get a rude awakening against a team like South Korea.

We should temper our expectations until the quarters, since that’s when the tournament really begins.

This is the tournament for our players with vast European experience (Taremi, Azmoun, ARJ, Ghoddos) to really step up. Unfortunately, I think our defense will be our downfall, but I hope I’m wrong.

The only way this team will have enough legs until the final, is if GN plays a mixture of A & B players in the group stage. I don’t care if we squeak through, playing the long game is more important.

If we don’t make it to the Semifinals, Fire GN ,

if we make it to the Semifinals, but lose Fire GN ,

if we make it to the finals , and lose, GN should, Be evaluated by how he finishes this round of WCQ and the game against Uzbekistan in Tehran…

if we win the tournament, then he deserve to be the coach at WC 2026

Yes, only in this case should the contract be extended. It is his 2nd try as well in the AC, no excuses not to win it.

But the dynamics of football in the continent have changed, literally over 12 months

14 months ago, Korea's transfermarkt value was fractionally less than ours, now they are four times ours with two top strikers in the premier league, best defender 2022/2023 in serie A etc...? We are talking about equals to a nation which has stars all over the pitch now.

I won't even mention Japan because anyone following european club football and their national team's run of wins knows what's going on.

Winning the Asian cup is of course possible, but it isn't realistic. Reaching the semi-final would be a success and if that happens mark my words he will get 2026 world cup (bookmark the post)

I have zero expectations of this team and coach staff. if they manage to do anything worthwhile, then it is pure coincidence and luck. Nothing more. We have done nothing in 40+ years and will not do anything, especially with GN and IRI. We should have taken our U-23 team to this tournament.

The talent gap between TM and Japan/korea is night and day now. Even 8th rated player of Japan (aka Wataru Endo) is a starter for Liverpool and he has just won the player of the month for the club.

Our U23 is so bad that they would lose all three group stage games lol

well, that is part of the transition. Right now TM is the oldest team in AC 2024!!. This tournament will come and go, at what point are we going to start the youth transition for the 2026 WC?

I think there are a couple of members who just don't really follow football so aren't aware of the gap now compared to what it was just a short while ago, even in mid-2022 in Korea's case

I know Mashsaaed is aware but some of the "we will win it" crew think we are still in 2017

Beside talent, s.k and Japan always dominate us because of their speed.....people think we play defensively against them and should attack.problem is their speed pins us to play d in our own half.evwn if the game plan is to attack they press us so high tm players give up the ball very fast to them....but tm always have puncher chance against them.

I do not agree at all. I remember ONE good attacking game under CQ, that was against S.Korea in Tehran during 2018WCQ. Iran was attacking for 90 min and should have won with 3,4,5 goals. Nazashtim nafas bekeshan.

I remember thinking after the game that perhaps CQ adam shode…Turns out it was just one game and he reverted back to his usual bs after that.
