I'm wondering, if the 70s team was so strong, why did they not qualify for the WC, or have little success in 1978? Does anyone know?

Unfortunately I was not around.
from what I searched
Tm did not participate in 1966 or 1970 wcq.

only 1 team qualified back then from asia and ofc.
Their first wcq appearance was 1974 but lost to Australia in semifinal, and eventually Australia made it.
1978 wcq tm qualified with ease.

I seen all 3 1978 wc groupe matches.
Holland made it to final.
Peru was power that year in south America
and Scotland was good as well in those years.
Tie Scotland was great result.
that Peru match tm had a lot of scoring opportunities but lost 4-1.
The Holland match tm players later on said they
where all scared of Holland still lost not bad 3-0 against runner ups.... Parvin said he send one of the players who speak English to tell Holland capitan, ali parvin mom had passed away
So they feel sorry for him and don't score a lot of goals on tm. 2018 TM WORLD CUP IS GREATEST EVER.

I think these result sums up where Iran is since post revolution. Comfortably on par with eastern european teams. A bit worse off than the 70s teams. On the other hand, football was semi amateur based post 80-90s. It is hard comparing teams. The level of football has exploded since 70s and its a matter of in which pace improvements have been made. Unfortunately many teams improved faster. This on the other hand does not mean that Irans football hasnt imrpoved immensely since 70s.

Ghalenoei had no wins versus UEFA national teams as player or coach.

As a player, at 1986 Fajr Cup he played for Iran "B" national team, he and his team mates lost to Romania U21. He also played for Team Melli in an unofficial match versus Bosnia and Herzegovina XI (that was actually FK Sarajevo) which they lost that match.

As coach, Team Melli drew Belarus in 2007 and Russia in 2023.

So if Team Melli defeats Bulgaria in September, it will be a huge accomplishment for Ghalenoei

if tm beats them.
I like to see pk shoot outs when there is a tie in 90
Minutes of action in friendly matches. It gets teams prepare for the real show.....

The night before the Iran - Wale's game I was so confident I bet some guy at a party with what he thought was a sucker's deal. I said you give me $200, if Iran wins, 2-0. Any other result, even an Iran win, I will give you $100. He didn't respond to my IG afterwards and haven't seen him since

.

But it was so funny how they scored 2 last minute goals. When Cheshmi lined up to shoot I remember thinking don't shoot. don't shoot! Since I never thought he had a no look, outside of the box screamer inside of his arsenal LOL. And a cheeky Ramin goal so late in the game, when nobody thought we'd see him in TM again? Easily one of the most iconic TM matches ever for me, I watched the highlights over 50 times. So sad about what happened versus the US afterwards, but I am still happy for this memory.

For me after the 2-1 USA win and Gucci goal versus Korea, this was the best moment as a TM fan.

if tm tied that match with Korea, tm wouldn't of even finish 2nd ,
tm would of finished 3rd place instead.

I agree with both statements, Reza carried us that whole WCQ campaign. He was such a technically gifted striker, and one of the most calm minded players I have ever seen in TM. He scored so many clutch goals, we just got used to seeing them. The Korea goal was pure class, and with all the drama beforehand, it'll forever be in my memory bank

After 2018 wc Gucci should of moved to pgl,
pp or ss, sepahan and his tm career would of.prolonged along with his own career...

dejageh should of been cq 25th man for wc22.
He was very effective last season as sub and he might of helped offensive spark in the last wc match needing a goal...

Dejageh his style of play is greatest I hVe seen a persion player ever play, just a different level.
Gucci had that killer instinct, he would of scored
the shot medi missed against Portugal......AND HIM not being invited to 2019 ac was mistake by cq, also another cq mistake was not calling up seywd Jalal for wc 18 and ac 19, and he got punished for that.
