Sardar Azmoun was back on the scoresheet tonight as he made his first start for Roma in their 3-0 win over Frosinone.
The Iran attacker was given the chance to start and play the full 90 minutes, scoring the team’s second goal of the night in the second half.

In his post-match reaction, Azmoun analyzed the team’s performance and thanked Jose Mourinho who departed the club while the striker was away on international duty.

“It was a tough match, especially in the first half. In the locker room, however, we changed tactics with the staff and in the second half we played well. Scoring is my job, I’m happy with the victory.”

“Why I apologized to Frosinone fans? Because after Huijsen’s first goal the Frosinone fans didn’t appreciate his celebration. The Frosinone players made us understand and I wanted to apologize. Respect in football is the most important thing. We are colleagues, friends, it’s difficult on the pitch, but it’s right to have respect for each other.”

“De Rossi? When I was little, I was a Roma fan. I always followed the big matches, because in Iran they only broadcast those. De Rossi was very aggressive but he had a big heart as a player. He is the same as a coach, he helps us a lot and motivates us a lot.”

“Before leaving I want to thank José for everything he did for Roma and for us players. I hope that now with De Rossi we will do even better.”

Very honorable guy, I like this interview from him. Shows his maturity over the years in my opinion.

Agreed, he got chances and more at Bayer, including starting over Holzek in champions league against Roma and many important cameo appearances. It was clear Xabi rated him, almost every coach likes him as a person and player which shows how flexible he is wherever he goes - much more of a professional than he gets credit for and represents us well.

He just never got on the board as a scorer often enough and hopefully with goals like these, simple tap ins, hustle goals, and power headers he can integrate himself into a starting position. Things are working out well enough, when we say trust the process it ends up materializing - Mourinho helped get him back into form and now De Rossi can give him the adequate opportunities and isn't going to blindly favor Lukaku anymore. Mou's hard on for Lukaku was way over the top and almost borderline insane, playing him every game with no rest.

yeah I get that. Still I don’t think Leverkusen were unwelcoming or unfair to him. To me it was kind of embarassing how little of himself he showed there, laziness and lack of fitness. They are a great club ran by great people who trusted him. OFC, he was unlucky there as well with injuries and changing coaches, last season the team just had a terrible set up and made everything was about diaby/frimpong + wirtz just returning from major injury.

And I don’t find return of Tammy that troubling, after long ACL injury and just returning to the pitch it will still take quite a while for him to be ready any serious minutes. Long term it seems they definitely wont move for lukaku, which makes you think that down the stretch if sardar is performing they will prefer to prioritize him as a guy they might seriously make permanent move for than a guy who is almost certainly a goner next season

His qualities all lie in his danger on speed and pressing at the front. It makes me reluctant to say they truly gave him the opportunity to shine when he was played in such an unfamiliar position.

It's kinda the same in TM when we play Mehdi all over the pitch as a midfielder instead of letting the poor guy do his thing at the top as a striker first

judging on one game is kind of ridiculous. He was their most dangerous player that game anyways. Fwds will miss chances and go multiple games without scoring but if you believe in their overall play then you will keep going with them until they start firing. See Nunez, Hojlund, vlahovic and many other examples.

But honestly at leverkusen its hard to say his overall fitness/play warranted that kind of faith (although all their CF had scoring problems last season, not just sardar). Although he did have on really good spell a bit after winter where he scored like 3-4 goals and had a couple assists, was weird that he did not get more consistent starts after that (but again, much of that was likely fitness related). All of that came as a CF and not in this weird 10 role that is a waste of time for him frankly.

Unlike Dybala and azmoun, I don’t think lukaku and sardar get along at all. Never seen them have a positive moment together or sardar mention him once.

I'm not judging him entirely on that game. I'm just saying he was afforded opportunities and that was the golden moment to deliver, I say that with him being my favorite player. Obviously, sometimes it doesn't happen, and so on, but they certainly trusted him with chances, which is kind of the main point I was getting at.

He had a great chance at the top of the 18 that game that went wide, also should've earned a DOGSO red that wasn't given either, and possibly a PK. Just didn't have some luck but that chance I think would've been a career altering if he finished

He accidentally celebrated in front of the opponent fans, realized it, and apologized.
