Although Japan made great progress 2018-2022, Saudi topped their WCQ group.
Somethings never change in Asia, meaning certain teams always have trouble playing other teams no matter which players/generations etc.
But none of this matters anyway, as the trophy will end up in the hands of Iran.Esteghlal 💙💙

Australia is a great team. It's the team that counts, not just individual players. They were fantastic in Qatar and their fans were pretty great too (the ones we met)."This is a totalitarian system whose presence people feel in their blood and in their flesh on a daily basis. And it’s one that does not grant freedoms of any kind, or accommodate people’s demands in any way. What is increasingly clear is that there is clear demand for change in the regime. What the people want is regime change, and no return to the past. There is a very real possibility of regime change." - Nasrin Sotoudeh

They were a better side in 2022 and 2018 before that.
Their only main player that has improved since last year is Harry Souttar who plays for Leicester and was big in the World cup.
Their veterans have had some poor/mixed form.
Aaron Mooy who used to play with Jahanbakhsh in Brighton is retired now and he was basically the tempo setter in their team.
Matthew Leckie who is losing his pace and not as threatening.
If you watch them play, their only dynamic attacker is Awer Mabil that great refugee story for the Australian NT. Without him their attack is as toothless and totally reliant on set pieces, which is why I make the argument that Japan (who has no problem now beating the US/German physicality) can handle Australia. Saudi might beat Japan on goals as they have shown in the past, its possible.
In reference to Australia's WC performance, in the World cup they had 24% possession vs Denmark and 33% against Tunisia. So they can smash and grab like a Quieroz team but they are not going to be dictating anything vs Saudis/Japan/Korea and even us.
It's more likely we beat Japan than Australia does.Last edited by perspolis#1; 12-14-2023, 01:31 PM.

they might even knock them out in qf
