Overrated. Too much off-field drama too. It says a lot that Parvin and Hejazi both spoke to Mohajerani to exclude him from 1978 team.

also overrated are Hejazi and Eskandarian. In the World Cup 1978 games they’re the worst players along with Allahverdi.

Cant agree about Hejazi - he was phenomenal!

Btw was Allahverdi the grandfather of our Gol Bezan comrade?

if he is, I mean no offense to him. He just wasn’t very good that tournament in my opinion.

Eh? How interesting that he played for decent sides but made 0 appearances? How does one end up at 4 decent teams without any appearances according to wiki? Strange

The players seem to like GN. If he can take the team to Semifinals, I want him to stay till WC 2026. We need a coach to stay with TM for more than a year instead of firing every single coach when they lose 1 game after 15 wins.

GN at WC2026 is better than a random foreigner coach who will have to spend 2 years learning who his fav starting XI is, possibly losing 1 game and having all fans turned on them, then getting fired with his replacement being another Iranian coach

Semi's is acceptable for GN to stay on if we play good football and lose. Otherwise I would give Yayha a chance. Longer term, Majidi or Nekou.

This doesn’t apply to most of us in this dedicated forum but in general, worldwide, I think it is “controversial” that we love our national team more than any club and it’s not even close. Like personally, I feel no real connection to any club that doesn’t have legionnaires on it. If I had to the choice to watch champions league final or team Melli friendly, on god I would choose team Melli friendly. I follow the scores across top leagues and European competitions, but if my “favourite” club Real Madrid doesn’t win the league, I couldn’t care less. If team melli lose to Algeria before WC in friendly, I’m sad.

Also, I don’t care at all about the national team of the country I was born in raised in. Faghat team Melli. Those of you in North America and Europe, I wonder what you guys think about following the country you live in.

anyways, I think a lot of us feel this way, especially those of you have been following team Melli for decades.

Exactly. I'm in the same boat. When people ask me what my favorite PL team is, I answer whichever one an Iranian is on. Right now it's Brentford haha. Big fan of Roma and Porto now of course for obvious reasons.

I could also care less about the US national team. Faghat Iran/Team Melli

Team Melli above all else by thousands of miles/kilometres

I watch the US as a secondary team but never get that excited.

Started out as a Persepolis/Manchester United fan but the Persepolis losses sting much more.

Wow I can’t believe I am reading this.

Ghelichkhani was an awesome player with Rocket shots. His performance in the 1976 Olympics against teams like Poland and Soviet Union is one of the reasons why Iran had such a great performance that year. TM always had a great midfield when he was playing. And the reason he was excluded for the 78 WC was because he had spoken against the Shah and nothing else.

Also how you can also call Hejazi and Eskandarian overrated is absolutely mind boggling.

Hejazi was the absolute best keeper in Asia and one of the top 6 or 7 keepers in the world. Did you know he was given an offer to play at Manchester United solely on his performance at the WC that year ??

Also Eskandarian was chosen to be among the best 22 players of WC 78 which led to an offer from New York Cosmos. The same team that Pele played at before his retirement.

However, you could not be more right about Allahverdi. That guy was one of the most useless players in TM history. His loser mentality was a prime reason why our defense was so Soorakh against Peru. If Eskandarian had not been suspended the score line would have been very different.
