In my last post I spoke about possible routes to the final. It would be a miracle if we got that far. We are not a contender to win this tournament with this level of coaching and performance.

We're a glorified manager-less side relying on the talent and experience of players to produce an attacking display good enough to win games in 90 minutes but at the mercy of any half decent coach with a decent game plan to nullify our attacking talent and expose our frailties. You can't get lucky enough to scrape through 7 games in a row playing without an identity.

Defensively, we're a shambles. We've struggled to look impenetrable for more than a 10-15 minute spell in 2 games against minnow nations. I wasn't sure if the rough lunatic approach Palestine took in the opener impaired how our team played but it's clear were a "big nation" just waiting to be upset by a 2nd rate Asian side like China or Uzbekistan or embarrassed by an actual side of our reputation like Japan, Korea or Australia.

For those people years ago who would slate CQ when we were winning by a goal or two against 2nd and 3rd rate Asian teams, bemoaning our lack of attacking potency / goals but looking like we'd never concede a goal... You can't tell me this is better. You can't want to see this wild randomness, hoping our opposition are just too shit to take the chances we're giving them.

Another thing, when people here extoll the virtues of playing week in week out in IPL and Arab leagues over being a squad player in Europe... Know that Saman Ghoddos has just shown you in 2 games why we should be wishing all of our players move to Europe. The man was chasing down defenders and the goalie on the press at 93 minutes, leading to a turnover of possession, when subs who'd been on the pitch 10 minutes were standing around watching.

Also, Mohebi looked like he'd never played football before. The guy looked like he's won a fan competition to be given a 10 minute TM cameo.

I can see the TM coaching team have tactically improved and this game was a tactical brilliance.
Preserve your players, don't collect any cards, injuries and come away with a win. Although a tie would have also sufficed.
Next game is easy tie, lose, win makes no difference. But of course we have to see how other groups do.
        We are in control.
We are in a very strong position to go all the way. Congratulations to the TM staff.

Going by the comments here though, I can see we fans have a long way to go yet

I haven’t posted in a while, but wanted to come back just to say that was painful to watch. Victory that makes you sick to see. This team needs to throw the game against uae to move to the other side of the bracket. We’d basically have Lebanon/Tajikistan/China, Iraq, and Syria/Bahrain/Oman path to semi-final to play one of Australia or Saudis who I like our chances against.

If we beat UAE, we are 100% guaranteed losing to SK/Japan in QF, might as well just pack it up with these types of performances. With a loss to UAE, we have a better path to the final where we leave the final to luck and hope we win.

There was a reason why CQ did not emphasize too much build up play with our team. When opponents press, you need touch, technique, and anticipation to escape. There were so many instances where we lost the ball in our own defensive half because of trying to play this style.

In a way, this was an excellent prep game before facing the likes of Japan or South Korea. So many bad individual performances by the team so I don’t fully blame GN.

I hope GN by now, has a full grasp of the limits of our team, and does not force a certain style of play when we can’t execute. It’s better to just boot the ball up in certain instances to better relieve the pressure.

I wouldn’t get too worked up about this game. Hong Kong played well, are well-coached, and had a good defensive shape. Let’s see what happens against UAE.
              well said 👍

any opponent we face from here on gonna look at our massive struggles against the high press today and would try to do the same thing to us moving forward in this tourney....!!
GN needs to turn his focus to finding the best solution to deal with high presses... imo it either involves good ol bezan ziresh o bodo jolo to open spaces left by opponent or Quick, 1 touch passing with requires constant and clever movement W/O Ball and consistently making sensible passing triangles in transition .. especially in MF areas..!

Sardar and Saman and to a lesser degree saeed are our best players for quick, 1touch passing in transition play thus neutralizing high presses and killer instincts and good finishing in the final 3rd is paramount to put the game to bed early and take the steam outa opponents early as in the Palestine match ..!

Khodad and Estili disappointed, Khiabani scared of japan,
                too many injuries ,
                talking about coaches confidence change

Forget the trophy. This team with this display should not even be in the tournament, let alone claim to be a contender. Iraq defeats Japan and we struggle to barely overcome the lowest rank team in the tournament.

                  Shame on all of them.

BTW Varzesh TV commentators are saying that Iraq defeating Japan may have affected all of our players.

Look at it this way: if we had lost to Iraq 2-1 we’d be losing our marbles. Japan, the elite powerhouse of Asia, with all the money, resources, planning, good players, excellent pre-tournament form, dropped a dud with their result.

At least 2 more games left, let’s see what happens..

Cheshmi should be sent home right away. This Bozo is a true liability. Jahanbakhsh and Mohammadi are also not far behind.

Beiravand needs to be benched right away. His antics today was truly embarrassing and destructive.

Damn what a crappy day !!

cheshmi shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near national team

I’m actually not confident at all when Cheshmi has the ball in the midfield. One of the reasons why we looked better against Palestine is cuz Ezatollahi is much more superior on the ball.

I agree, GN needs to figure out a better way out of the press, because trying to build up like today will lead to a minimum 1-2 goals scored against us from teams like Japan/South Korea.

Losing your head after Iraq-Japan game is a true sign of unprofessionalism. You have a chance here to secure a convincing victory with as many goals possible to put fear in your opponents eyes but yet again they chose to be absolute crybabies. Weak mentality is not something you can change over the course of a tournament and if the reports coming out of the TM camp are true we were doomed from the start.

Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things and no good thing ever dies.
