officiating in this game was atrocious. 2 obvious calls when they should have gone to VAR and they don't, and the one time when they should not have gone to the VAR, they did. The ref on the field was ok, but the officials behind the booth were clearly favoring Japan.“It is easier to fool the people, than to convince them they have been fooled." - Mark Twain

Wow! Tabrik be hamegi!
To a man we were superb today. Apart from their goal (sloppy tracking from Saeed and a couple of poor, missed tackles) we were totally comfortable.
A few thoughts:
1) Credit to the superb tactics and set up from GN. Fair play to him; he is flexible and the decision to move to midfield 3 was thankfully made.
2) ARJ had one of his best games for us, both in and out of possession and alongside Mohebbi, the tactic to overload them with physicality on the flanks worked a treat.
3) Saman in particular really caused them real problems drifting off the dominant Sardar. We need to play him there for the rest of the tournament, gives us better balance and he is more dangerous and effective in this advanced position.
3) The mid-to-high level press in the second half worked perfectly and they for a Japan team that is that technically good to not be able to play their way out of it shows how good our shape out of possession was.
4) I thought this great defensive structure was also largely evident in the first half in our distances and angles from Sardar, across midfield and to the defensive line. The rare exceptions being the goal and a few times both full backs got sucked out of position during Japan's overloads on the flanks.
5) To win a cup you need to combine the slightly fortuitous (Syria pens) with the dominant and for us to dominate Japan in this way sets a marker for the rest to worry about us. With a fresh and eager Taremi back against Qatar/Uzbeks this will keep our opponents guessing about how to set up against us.

I actually think the ref was quite lenient to us. He made a couple of questionable calls but in no way was he harsh to us…we could have easily had a few yellows from how we manhandled some of the Japanese.
As far as the game is concerned, this was Azmoun’S match. He’s so strong aerially that there’s nothing a team like Japan can do to stop him. They were crowding him and were so worried and fixated on him all game that is gave our wingers and midfield some room to breath.
The tactics were on point. This was exactly what we needed to do and exactly what we did. That’s rare by TM standards!
