I think these days, the VAR referees may be more important. It was clear from Mohebbi's disallowed goal vs UAE that they were looking for any excuse to overrule it. On paper the referee has the last word, but once the VAR asks the ref to look at it, its rare that the ref overrules VAR.

I think we're considerably stronger than Qatar so even with these underhanded tactics we can beat them by 2/3 goals very comfortably if we play our game and are fully motivated

He gave a red card to UAE, where Bento also got sent off, and was the referee for the Bahrain Japan game where Japan won 3-1. I do not know much about his career to be honest.
