my friend, you forgot 2000 Asian Cup. we had 1-0 lead, Daei mishit the clearance and korea equalized in stoppage time. then korea scored winner with golden goal in extra time
we are cursed and huge chokers. it is crazy how awful our history is
You are totaly right, forgot to include that antiklimax also....
A crucial moment was when in the first half Taremi was wide open for JB to pass to, which would have been a clear sitter. This would have made it 2-0 and it would have been a different game entirely. It probably was one of the simplest passes to make this entire championship l, however JB goes and messes that up...
We undoubtedly have structural issues with football, but that’s not why we lost today.
We lost because of the nature of this sport. We hit the post, had shots saved off the line, our players found themselves in multiple dangerous transition moments and wasted them. Meanwhile Qatar had two goals from deflections, both against the run of play effectively killing our momentum at the perfect time for them. Guys, today we just lost to football, don’t overthink it. Get some rest, let the emotions wear off. See you at the next tourney, hopefully with a bit of a facelift for our team.
Well-said. We definitely have deep rooted issues in our football, but that wasn’t the reason we lost today. Luck wasn’t on our side, and we didn’t capitalize on our chances.
We actually performed the best from all the top 5 teams in Asia. Knocking out tournament favorites Japan, and not getting embarrassed in the semifinals like South Korea did against Jordan 2-0.
This was overall a wacky asian cup, and not just a wake up call for us to work on our flaws, but a wake up call to Japan, South Korea, etc.
The 2nd & 3rd tier teams of Asia woke up in this tournament, and it took everyone by surprise.
why general went away from his
Kick ass 4 4 2 against arab teams
And switched to
4 2 3 1
Why
He wanted to counter Qatar 3 man midfield vs our 2 midfield, he didn't factor in that Ebrahimi can't play anymore and that Taremi is not a wide winger so he is useless in that role. Pushing Ghoddos up the pitch made our defense weaker too.

very true. Wake up call specially for Saudis, Australia and Japan. At least in the battle of BIG 5, Iran and Korea came out victorious Korea was the better side of the BIG 5 by defeating Australia and Saudis. And Iran against Japan. Worst was Japan. But anyways honestly Iran and Korea will never win in this confederation. Both countries play above the continent and have players in Europe and these Arab systems doesn’t match their style. Korea can only play good teams. I think Asian Cup should be Arab Cup and eventually banned or send U23 to these games. It is not a good quality anymore anyways. 24 teams have decreased the quality of games immensely. Iran should exit AFC ( Arabs Football Confederation). Cheers

I have said it many times and will say it again! Iran will never win an Asian Cup anymore. AFC (Arabs Football Confederation) won’t allow it. Even if we beat Japan which we did this time, Arabs all unite to bring us down. We are an emotional nation. They know how to go on our nerves. They start it before the match by choosing Arab referee, by decreasing our share of tickets by Persian Gulf vs Arab Gulf and many other shit. Iran like Israel has to exit AFC. Both Iran and Korea; are at higher level and should not waste their time playing in Arabs Cup. They would never win it anymore. The corruption and ugly play ruins our beautiful soccer. That’s why when giants (Japan, Korea, Saudi and Australia) play us we do our best but we fail against these Arab nations. If you want to hate me go on and do so but truth hurts. We have to get out of AFC. Either register a completely separate confederation like Centra Asian Confederation or join Europe. I am hearing the same thing from Uzbeks. Anyways relax guys like you didn’t know? Why you’re shocked?!! Seriously, you thought we could win the Asian Cup in an Arab Gulf (lovely Persian Gulf but as they wrongfully state) country where all Arabs goal is for Iran not to win it
We lost the game on the field not because of any corruption lol

At least play that formation in a friendly match.
Omid can play but to ask him give u 100 minutes vs Japan then start few days later is not fair to omid or fans.

This is where his squad selection came back to haunt him. If he had someone like Hosseinejad or Nourallahi the formation would have worked with more defensive hustle too. Nevertheless Taremi should never be played as winger role again, it is disrespectful to Ghaedi and Mohebi.
One word explains all of these errors and that word is "complacency".
It's like a student who knows there is a big test on Monday, is capable to focus and put in the needed work, but for some reason spends the weekend playing video games instead of studying.
To go through these tournaments and lift a trophy, the coaches have to cross all the t's and dot all the i's each time after doing a complete opposition research.
It seems like the player selection was not optimal when looking at who Qatar was fielding and their game strategy.
Why put a 36 year old DM in a 4-2-3-1 position against a team that has fast players?
Why not bring in a technical player like Gholi when you see our players are stressing and cant keep the ball?
Why is Shoja getting playtime? He is not TM material.
Why not sub Taremi out when you see his head is not in the game?
Why do you still insist on crossing when it is clear it does not work?
Taremi didn’t belong in the lineup. We played our best game without him. I don’t care what his name is or how many CL goal he has… WE PLAYED OUR BEST FOOTBALL WITHOUT HIM AND BEAT JAPAN!!! Ghalenoei riid big time with this decision.

I disagree. How did anyone know that this won’t be Taremi’s best day? When he got injured everyone thought we would lose to Japan 100%. After we ecaped the loss and won our main battle, everyone was happy to have him back. And he was subbed anyways towards the end of the match. Who knew bro? Like Ghodoos in general had a fabulous Cup but not him or Ebrahimi or even our great Rezaian were themselves We lost the game before the start. When Ezatulahi got into Persian Gulf vs Arab gulf discussion, when we fell again for Arab Football Confederation crappie plan to ruin our minds by appointing an Arab Ref, when we started focusing on outside and stands rather than being ourselves and play our beautiful soccer. We lost then. We lost to Islam, Islamic Republic and corruption of Arab countries. We lost then. Taremi is a human and can be good one day and bad next day. We never learn because we are emotional and Arabs know that. We should not play with them or if we play with them just completely ignore their psychological warfare

This result is dedicated to those who were kissing Ghalenoei’s feet and saying how they overestimated CQ. At least with CQ, we lost to good teams and didn’t struggle against Arabs. Anyone with a memory from 1979-2011 knew this is Iran’s destiny. Best part, Ghalenoei will probably be rewarded for this performance. We didn’t deserve to beat Japan. That was one game of luck, otherwise, we’ve been unimpressive for the other games of the tournament. This was Skocic 0.5 (I can’t say 2.0 because this was half as good as Skocic would’ve done). People who just look at results say “wow, we’re on an X game winning streak against the donkeys of Asia!”
Learn to pay attention to the on-field product. We didn’t play with any plan, and like South Korea, talent only gets you so far. We had no plan to switch to when luck went against us today. Against Japan, aliasghari long balls worked. They were not working this game at all, and we got lucky for the penalty gifted to us. We were bad and couldn’t score from open play. Our luck ran out, simple as that.
Edit: if Ghalenoei isn’t fired this week, that will tell you all you need to know about IFF. We learned we are no better on the field with vatani coach, but at least we can develop a new generation with a proper, quality coach. This generation squandered the last chance at glory, very sad. Hopefully Taj gives Ghalenoei his termination papers asap and brings someone like Renard in. We need to start early.
The problems with Iran's football are multi-faceted and today they were on full display. This is one of the best football generations in the country's history, a team that has played together for more than five years, with tons of international experience at the highest level. They were supposed to have the know-how, the chemistry and the hunger to, at last, get the job done. But a team that plays inconsistently, eking out a win with tremendous heart but showing up flat at the next match, will not be able to get it done. This is the same pattern we saw during the World Cup as well. Of course, they had an excuse--the emergence of a crisis in Iran and the ensuing psychological pressure. But what was the excuse today? Being unlucky?
As I said, the problem has multiple causes, not just the bureaucracy and lack of sufficient resources, but coaching issues and possible apathy and emotional instability on the part of some players. There was too much pressure to deliver, which they were not paychologically prepared to handle.
Despite what happened, I believe these players and the coaching staff must be commended for the hard work they put in. Against Syria and Japan, especially, they played their hearts out. Some of our players need to help the team by retiring now. A world class coach would be nice, but can the federation afford it? The players need to take some time off and do some soul searching to figure out how they can benefit the team going forward.

I had a feeling Ebrahimi wouldn’t be great against Qatar. He was able to impose his physicality against the Japanese because they’re smaller.
I was actually hoping we’d play similar lineup to our last game against Uzbekistan:
-Torabi & Gholizadeh on the wings (good for build up play, technical ability)
-Saman & Ezatollahi as our defensive midfielders
It was one of our best halves with GN until Saman got injured. Maybe the victory against Japan and the media buzz caused GN to overthink his lineup…
