we only beat Japan bcuz of 2 mistakes: Go on the street to find new players

Mohebbi goal came from a young in experienced goalie who cleared the ball in a panic and turned it over we scored on a nice link up

then freak of nature, 2 Japanese CB miss a simple header to clear the ball and, that same goalie doesn't clean up we get a pk

I recommend Final Boss Amir Ghalenoi to watch kids on the street play when he eats kaleh pache because this group we had since 2018 will never win anything.

Weird thread. Football is always a game of mistakes. Same is the goal of Japan against us

        2006 World Cup

Italy beat Ghana 2-0 off a short corner where none of Ghana's players closed down Pirlo and the other where Ghana GK missed time run and Iaquinta runs around him.

They tied US due to Zaccardo own goal.

Third game: No one on Czech Republic guards Materazzi on corner and Inzaghi gets by poor offside line by Czech.

R16: Italy gets penalty vs Australia. Questionable dive vs poor defending

QF--> Ukraine--> 2 out of 3 goals were terrible Ukrainian defending in the box

Semifinal: Germany fail to close down Grosso in box leading to ET goal.

Final: Zidane red card --> which is a mistake leading to Italy winning in penalties.

LOOOL stop it Zidane 1 million percent deserved a red card and now with VAR we can see.
so every game Italy played the other team made a mistake? So Italy did something right to force the mistake. We played 2 tough teams and 1 of them eliminated us.

Yes you have reached the proper conclusion Italy forced mistakes in some cases and the other team made mistakes(Zidane) in other situations.

Together that led to them winning the World Cup.

We forced Japan to make mistakes the same way.

Getting your opponent to make mistakes and then taking advantage of those mistakes is pretty much the playbook.

Yes, So we can see this core group will never be able to get that done consistently under pressure

The mistake in question by Japan being from Kanaani randomly being in the box completely outside of position 🤣🤣. Would be better to say we shithoused them instead.

We have to give credit where credit’s due: GN did great against Japan. With all their European stars, the excellent form before the tournament, we not beat only them, but really dominated them.

A lot of us (including me) underestimated GN, but he overall had a good asian cup.

A coach is “bad” when they no longer evolve, or refuse to learn from their mistakes. Depth & development will be key before our next World Cup. I really hope he will do well in this area, because I do not see a high-level foreign coach coming here anytime soon.

I honestly don't know how to give credit to him...

From one perspective..we beat Japan...the hottest team in Asia who had dominated European teams just a few months earlier like Germany. That is an insane feat and props to GN for getting it all right.

From the other perspective...I saw many alarming things that make me go a bit uh oh...what are we doing here? For one, we conceded every single game (aside from HK game) tallying up to 7 goals total conceded in the whole tournament. After that, almost all 7 goals conceded were from amateur mistakes by our own players. Palestine, Qatar, and Japan goals were all from deflections on our own players poor positioning. UAE and Qatar goals from Ramin being way out of position. Multiple misjudgements by Beiranvand (handling the ball outside of the box, drawing a penalty with a poor challenge, not paying attention vs Qatar). Furthermore how many amateur mistakes did we see like Ramin keeping people onside that should be off? I expect more from 34 year old "experienced" defender.

I'm personally am convinced that in order for this team to get far in any upcoming tournaments, we need to rethink our whole defense. I urge everyone here to watch highlights of all the goals conceded by TM in the last year, you will find these players like Ramin and Milad just aren't enough. Almost all of our goals conceded start from Ramin or Milad being too high up, followed by our nearly geriatric CBs being too slow to cover for them. This is not a winning team right now, and I just don't know if I can trust GN just yet to make it one, one year into his tenure.

I hope that he can do better, I just don't know if he even sees the problems with the team because he would have done something about all these problems a year ago...on top of that he is surrounded by yes men who won't dare say no to him. Our TM tactical strategist got his certificate from a $400 Barcelona online course

                        Wholeheartedly agree.

I've been watching PGL more and some of the same dumb moves by our TM defense are magnified by some teams there.

CBs obsessed with acrobatic clearances(messing them up too) and "pahlevan" like header challenges that dont pay off and put us in trouble.

Our wingbacks are too focused on physicality with speed or just lobbing it up the line.

This is all made 1000x worse when most of progressive play can only be done by passing to Ezatolahi when he is facing our goal.

I would love if we could line up a defense that is skilled on the ball and can pass out a press.

I'll settle for one ball playing CB and wingbacks that can cross though.

A lot of it really is just that our back 4 suck . Skocic for all his problems tried different approaches to fix our backline. I remember he introduced Moharrami and Hardani to TM, and tried different solutions at LB like Milad/Noorafkan/Amiri (Which even if Noorafkan failed at the time, it felt like he was trying different prospects?). Furthermore I remember him calling up Aghasi in the Algeria game which tremendously helped our left side defense after he got subbed in at half time.

To me I just can't see this Ghalenoei doing any of that. He's spent the last year just re-using the same squad CQ called up in 2022 because he was unfamiliar with TM after 2019. I honestly consider CQs return in 2022 extremely damaging for the future of this team because he reintroduced these players like Ramin and Cheshmi who had been phased out for for years by that point in favor of younger players. I love him as a coach but his comeback was too fast and he had a 2 month turnaround which made him unable to implement anything, even after all the million camps he held before the WC for our domestic players

Both Japan & South Korea conceded a lot of goals in the last Asian Cup. Part of it is other weaker teams are becoming better, another part is when you play an offensive brand of football, it’s difficult to be tight in the back.

GN said he would focus on depth and bringing in younger players after the Asian Cup, so let’s see if he’ll deliver on his promise. He did show signs of this with his selection in the 1st leg of the Turkmenistan game.

I’ve never been a big fan of Shoja, but maybe Kanaani is slightly better. Just replacing those two defenders would be a big improvement in our defense.
