I tried to make this case to people but many were as usual trying to downplay Mehdi’s chances…inter play 2CF, always, and play a fk ton of matches. With Inzaghi system the two forwards have to cover a ton of ground during pressing actions. Last year lautaro played so many games he finally got a really bad muscle injury that he clearly isn’t fully recovered. Thuram has also dealt with injury and consistency issues. But of course those two are high class players.
Issue for inter last year was that behind them the drop in class was massive…and guys like Alexis and arnautovic despite being woefully off the level required for a title chasing and CL challenging team actually ended up playing a lot of critical minutes…and that was what really cost them down the stretch vs atletico when they got Kod.
With taremi they have a Cf who will pair very well with both Lauta and thuram, capable of adjusting his game to fit either of their profiles, while maintaining (probably even improving) the teams pressing capability from the front.
Naturally he will get many minutes across all comps. And this idea he needs to start every match is also outdated. He is 32 now. To truly perform at a high level for 3 more years and achieve his max at inter he needs to stay fit and fresh. Last year I felt for the first time he was finally burnt out bc of consecutive years with mid season TM games (WC and AC) and having so much responsibility at Porto without much help. That affected his performances for both Porto and TM.

But I have to say I disagree about the importance of him to score….pressure is not on him to score as long as he is contributing to goals and creating them which he did last game. Proper European coaches value a striker like Mehdi who does more than score….it was heavily talked about in the Portuguese media, Italian media, and both his former coaches (carvalho and sergio conceicao) always said stuff about it too and if I’m not mistaken inzaghi also said something about it too recently. Of course it’s important and a primary objective for a forward but it’s not everything. He will stay in the lineup/maintain a significant role so long as he is contributing to goals and creating them IMO.

Taremi needs to be more selfish, especially because he plays on a team with multiple personalities and multiple superstars. Sometimes he needs to just not give that extra pass. Take the ball and just smash it on goal and try to score because these players are world class players if you stutter they’ll jump on the opportunity and take your spot he’s been granted two really good situations right now since Martinez is injured so all he has to do is make sure this game coming up against Atlanta. He does something but mostly scoring because in Italy they don’t care about him giving an assist that much. Remember the old Brazilian Ronaldo when he played inter he would just pick up the ball and dribble like 3 or 4 players and score , or Recoba , Adriano , all of them jus a bit selfish in scoring , that’s what they want him to do. Fuck this teamwork shit that he used to do an FC port, neither Thurman or Martinez will ever give that extra pass , they would just shot on goal , same with Mikhtariyan ,,,,
just shot the ball on net ….take some chances…

As Mehdi is slated to start again tomorrow vs Atalanta, who is a very good side (defending EL champs), here are my keys to a successful performance for Mehdi:- Decide and act quicker - Mehdi likes to hold the ball and "let the play develop" (i.e., so he can allow his teammates to make runs), but as Iran_19 jan astutely pointed out, the Serie A is the best defensive league in the world. Mehdi got caught waiting too long a few times vs Lecce and was dispossessed.
- Trust his instincts - One of his best traits is his instincts, like when he saw a poor back pass last game and pounced on it and nearly drew a PK. He needs to trust his intuition.
- Draw PKs (but no diving) - He needs to draw PKs by utilizing this unique skill, and not dive. He was great at drawing them a few years ago at Porto (they were mostly legit PKs). But for some reason, I feel like he's resorted to "diving" a bit more lately.
- Continue to fight and hustle - Many Inter fans were impressed by his hustle, another key attribute. Continue to help defensively, fight for loose balls, and be all around the pitch.
