fun fact about Alireza, he has 190 appearances in eredivise league. By far the most from any Asian player. He can add to the tally if he plays out the most of the this season too. If he had not gone to English Primer League he could be in the top 10 players as far as number of caps by a foreigner in the league.

All I know is that had it been Gucci with that last shot vs Portugal, we would've had a historic run at the 2018 WC.

Easy to say that in hindsight. Heck, if I had the last shot, we would've had a historic run...

You guys all talk about that last shot, but don’t realize Mehdi plays those games because he has incredible hustle and coverage.

Gucci was probably a better finisher but they’re night and day in terms of recovery, defense, passing, coverage…

Mehdi brought us the Wales 2022 win and Sardar gave us the 2024 Japan win. Besides that both have been ghosting in major tournaments going almost 10 years at the next Asian Cup

I watched it from when he came on.

His team was very sloppy. Completely tuned off.

Embarrassing loss for them to a team that looked like the village P.E teacher and his mates from the pub.

AJ did well, but should have been a bit more dominant and quicker at decision making at times.

I dont know exactly what it is but something in the way he starts up to cross/shoot/pass always makes me think he has heavy legs.

The only times I remember him doing something agile was crossing out Zabaleta in WC14 and the move that led to Mohebbis goal vs Japan.

Its all rooted in his first season in Brighton. A combination of his injury against Everton and gaining muscle in the EPL reduced his quickness. He never recovered from that.

It seems like both a physical and mental issue (overthinking his moves).

It's his big hamstring injury that he suffered. Taremi suffered a similar one last year. It makes you heavy and you can't generate as much explosive speed. It's why he can't run as fast as he used to even in 2019-2022.

                      Also overall aga

Taremi brought us the 2022 Wales win??? I think he had a decent game, but if it wasn't for the poor clearance by the Wales defender and Cheshmi's quick decision making to take a great shot (98th minute!), the game was going to end a draw.

Again, he has never really been clutch. Clutch players with ice in their veins tuck these away (would at least be on target!); Taremi has never been that guy.

Azizi's goal against Australia is a chance that Taremi would miss 7 or 8 times out of 10 in a big moment like that - There's some things like true grit that you just can't teach, you either have it or you don't.

I agree he's not a clutch player, his best is when he gets a full 90 to have a few moments of brilliance. My point was that the Wales game was 50% Taremi. And I'm not saying it randomly, take a look at any stat website. He had the best stats of any Iranian player that game. He was actually highest rated player ( Even with Cheshmi getting MOTM for his goal). He had most key passes of either side, best defensive stats, biggest heatmap, etc. He also had more than double the touches of Azmoun (who was out of form the whole game).

Now when it comes to actually finishing, yeah he's been ghosting when it actually matters lol. But I'm not gonna sit here and pretend he didn't give his best WC performance for us in 2022, that Wales game was his best Iran game ever even if he didn't score, in terms of rating and stats. He produced more key passes (8) than the whole Wales team + the rest of our team combined. If Azmoun, Gholizadeh, Nourallahi, and Ezatollahi didn't have ED this guy could have 3-4 assists between the two games with how many times he set them up.

We love to constantly complain about Taremi and Azmoun but the truth is we need to start asking more of other players, like why the hell does Ezatollahi only have 1 goal for Team Melli in almost 90 caps. Or why has Beiranvand conceded 15 goals in 10 games.

Okay so he was our best player overall stat wise but he didn't "Bring us the win", that's still Cheshmi more than anyone else in that particular game. You don't look at any of Messi or Ronaldo's best games and talk about how many passes they completed or their defensive contributions or how much ground they covered, that's all fine and dandy but the bottom line is about the difference a player makes in the result of a game.

I do agree that we tend to put too much pressure on our strikers and someone like Ezatollahi has to be more aggressive on offense, this is why it's silly when Beirandvand says we're the greatest generation. Don't have to go back far, just look up how many goals Nekounam, Bagheri or even Ando used to score in the CM/CDM position.

"Greatest generation" riding on coattails of Taremi, Azmoun, and ARJs contributions/moments of brilliance. Without those 3 this team would be the worst generation lol. Ezatollahi is good but overrated IMO.
