I grew up in Melbourne. Could speak Persian (fairly poorly), but wasn’t so connected to my Iranian heritage, trying to fit in Australia was hard. My dad worked as a taxi driver 18 hours a day so I barely saw him, except when he took me to football on weekends. I played football 4 or 5 times a week, and it is the main thing we connected on.

We started following TM during the 1997 WCQ. It was almost impossible to watch here, we would get in a car and end up at some random Iranian’s house watching with Arabic commentary. I remember all those matches, the loss against Qatar and Japan. Then, playing Australia was like a dream come true. We went to the game and then to the hotel for days after, met all the players and staff. Best memory of my life, and more importantly, made me connect way more to my Iranian culture. I became completely fluent in Persian, studied Iranian history at university, and have followed TM ever since. My dad is older now and can’t wake up for games, but we still watch highlights together. Without football and TM, there is no way I would be as Iranian as I am.

What good was it? Two Asia cup 3rd place finishes and 4 points total in 2 world cups + the colossal f***up in qualifying for 2002. I love all those players but “golden generation” is a curse.

The 2018 generation has been way more consistent at a high level.

For real. People love their rosy eyed glasses look but forget how many atrocious games we had back then. Back when we actually used to lose to Kuwait, Bahrain, Syria, Iraq on a consistent basis. Did that generation ever 3-0 Iraq away? Or dominate South Korea for nearly 10 years? How about win two world cup games and tie Portugal?

One thing to note… previous gen didn’t need khareji players to qualify for world cup. It was strong enough to stand on its own legs in Asia at least. We needed outside talent just to keep our heads above water in Asia back in 2012. 2 of top 5 influential player in 2014 campaign came from Europe.

There is no question sardar has been immature, unprofessional and not appreciating his talent and trust me when is all set and done he will regret his behavior, but he has gas left in tank for wc26 and ac 27 to be effective, so he must be used.

How u feel about sardar , I felt for ali karimi and azizi. Both karimi and azizi hurt themselves by being unprofessional and bad attitude. Them 2 not only hurt themself achievement wise but they also hurt tm and the fans. Not making 2002 wc was beacause of azizi and not making 2010 wc was because of karimi. For years I called for their prosecution for treason.

Karimi last week on podcast admitted he would eat PIRASHKI AND SANBUSE FEW HOURS BEFORE THE MATCH BEGAIN.I TURNED the tv OFF TV WHEN I HEARD THAT .
what piss me off more about karimi he haD 6 PACK AT 40.
