    TM defense structure discussion

    Hey all!

I've been rewatching the last few TM games and I think honestly as much as we like to complain about the players themselves that start like Shoja, Kanaani, Nemati, etc...I've been seeing a running theme across all of our games when it comes to structure.

    Let me cite some examples:

    1. Something major I'm seeing is that players look scared to challenge. Against NK and Kyrgyzstan, we were losing a lot of 1v1s. It seems like our players are for whatever reason afraid to challenge and be a bit more physical when it comes to defending and it really shows on set pieces. We are getting REALLY afraid during set pieces and corners especially, doing only light challenges (maybe players are scared of being blamed for causing a penalty? Biggest offender is Saeed Ezatollahi I've noticed across the last 4-5 games)

    2. Structurally, players don't know where to be when we don't have the ball. In recent games vs Qatar and Kyrgyzstan, there are times when 4-5 players run out of position to mark a single person leaving a giant hole in the middle of the pitch for the opponent. A lot of the time you see players doing solo runs up and down and this extends to defense as well. Our lack of rigidity when it comes to defense means it's a free-for-all and there are occasions when all the players run off to do their own things while our CBs get outnumbered. Biggest offenders: our fullbacks, wingers, and midfielders are sometimes nowhere to be found on counterattacks and when we lose possession.

    3. A reactive GN: there are often no substitutes until the last few minutes UNLESS we concede 1-2 goals. GN freaks out and changes half the team with defenders and tall players to hold on for dear life. Against NK, he randomly subbed in Noorafkan, Cheshmi, Moghanlou, and Hosseinzadeh as a desperate reaction to conceding 2 goals. This tells me that we don't really have a plan B. You might have noticed this pattern in a bunch of games vs Uzbekistan, Qatar, NK, Kyrgyzstan, HK, etc.

Edit: I got one more lol

    4. Taremi and Azmoun problem: At any point in the last year, you might have asked yourself why the hell is Taremi so deep? Why is this guy being found at CB, LB, RB, LW, etc. Why is when teams play 4-4-2 with two strikers (one of whom drop back) the teams are usually more defensive minded keeping two rigid banks of 4 when out of possession (best example is Japan vs Germany/Spain at World Cup). In TM, our fullbacks play super aggressively leaving us 2-4-4 a lot of the time on counterattacks, leading to Taremi having to play SUPER deep.

He will get with pgl coaches to fix tm defense in next 3 months..
Base on that mentality dont be surprise
If general calls up faraji for rb , pag is recalled and milad lb
    To have
All 4 pp defenders who practice every day with eachother and that might just be general fixing d through pgl

    Faraji. kanani. Pag. Milad
    Back line

I'm certain it's a coaching problem after rewatching a fair number of our games. We always talk about individual players like Shoja but all I see in our players is anxiety, uncertainty about their roles, and what to do when they don't have the ball.

Taremi should NEVER be covering for CB, RB, CDM end of story. We should also never be losing majority of 1v1s to physically inferior North Korean players

        1) Despite all the sabre rattling of Shoja etc hating on CQ this point is because in our players psyche they know they have no defensive plan. If they make a 50/50 1v1 challenge and lose out it likely means a dangerous chance for the other team. Thats how disorganized it is right now. For set pieces, its because there is no shape or zonal marking and everyone individually defends. When there is no plan... there is no confidence.

        2) This is a consequence of us forgetting all defensive structuring postCQ. The reason you see 4 people chase one guy is because everyone is ball watching and working off that.

In modern football(not Iranian) the game is like chess.

If a LB runs up to join the attack the RB either tucks in to be a 3rd defender(Walker) or joins the midfield (Trent Alexander Arnold).

None of these patterns exist for us. It is basically run up the wing and do something, or through pass and do something, or long ball and do something for all our players.

        3) GN is not a good coach. Thats all it is. He is a mafioso motivator like Sean Dyche but without the defensive structure coaching. There is no plan B. If you watch European football, look at Manchester United's new coach Amorim just hooking Rashford off 50 minutes in for not doing well. GN would never do that to Taremi/Azmoun/Ezatolahi etc.

Even the most average coaches have some obvious Plan B subs like pacy winger, or possession based midfielder or aggressive play destroyer/fouler. GN just throws the kitchen sink everygame

I been saying this for years, galenoie mentor is nasser ibrahimi .gn when is panic time he copies what nasser ibrahimi used to do.
Subs of player before a pk was nasser ibrahimi specialty.subing a tall player to play forward when Need a goal is nasser ibrahimi style.bringing in a closer dmf when up a goal is nasser ibrahimi..subing goali before pk so is nasser ibrahimi.

The subs are always incredibly stupid too. Against NK he subbed out our wingers for 2 CDMs so we we were playing 4-4-2 where everyone in the middle is a CDM 😭.

Maybe it's the armchair coach in me but I feel as though if you get red-carded, you take out one of your strikers so you can keep a 4-4-1 formation instead of subbing out everyone EXCEPT your strikers

GN prides himself on being offensive-minded, and our offense has absolutely no structure! Forget about defense structure!

You want defense structure, go watch TM games in WC2018 under CQ.
