The 2022 numbers should basically be ignored as due to COVID restrictions the numbers are artificially low.

Further to this, you could see why our fans were so thirsty for football in the 98 qualification campaign. From 1980 to 1996, we had only had 5 World Cup qualification games in Iran!Comment

For those who are bummed out about Iranian club results in Asia - don't fret.
We're generally very streaky.
Once in a while a golden generation does well for a few years, but almost always we f*** it up.
If we don't lose to a West Asian team that spent millions on a foreign player, we lose to an East Asian club by giving them a cheap penalty or scoring an own goal.
The data shows no trends, except that if Persepolis does well continentally, it usually means we have a very good crop of players coming in. Sounds obvious, but it is what it is.
Below table shows the year (or year ending) of Asia's top club tournaments and the best Iranian club result.

The only data for iranian football is 0.
One mistake Iranians do is saying our clubs cannot compete with millions dollars spend by qatar, uae, ksa. That is very exaggerated. Uae/qatar just add 2 or 3 washed up foreigners to amateur local players. There is no excuse to fail that much against them. About KSA, they have much more quality both in their local players and foreigners. I expect us to lose but we are beyond pathetic most of the time. Even uzbek and iraqi clubs manage a win or score much more goals against them. Btw john duran from colombia or mitrovic from serbia is the kind of pot 2 or pot3 players we can face at WC.
At least before we had our euro legionnaires to rely on when our clubs failedComment
