One of my uncle's friends who claims to be childhood friends with Haghighi's dad claims that he is a part-time model in Portugal
This is because Penafiel does not pay him enough and he was pretty close to going to Turkey 2nd div or even Al Chos Qatar League...but this changed his mind as he preferred living in Portugal.

He got a lot of buzz for his looks at the WC. Maybe that helped him be a model.

Well, thanks for sharing this with us but its actually quite sad! He had a decent World Cup and the best he could get is a loan contract with some soorakh Portugese team! I honestly think being Iranian makes life for our players twice as hard. Haghighi probably needs to be the second Neuer or Buffon to get an offer from a Bundesliga bottom team (for example). Same goes for other players who deserve to play in Europe: Hajsafi, Pooladi...

^agreed. Sometimes I feel that how African Americans get treated in US by cops and double standards is how Iranians get treated by the WHOLE WORLD.

(Note to others: Please don't turn my post into a political gibber jabber, yes we get it down with IR, up with SHAH, it is America's fault, it's all Israel's doing, etc)

totally agree bro. I mean, if our team was really that bad that we don't have many legionnaires in Europe then why we beat Korea already three times? They have a team full of European legionnaires, yet they lose three times a row against us. I am convinced that it has to do with many non-footballing reasons why our players and talents aren't transferred to Europe.

                Food for thought!

Obviously. Top european teams have training facilities in Africa, where they find and develop African players. When was the last time any top european team came to Iran and actually invested? I know Bayern was trying to do something with Persepolis, but if I'm not mistaken it fell through.

not everyone who does good in WC gets contract these days. look at the costa rica team, they did better than anyone and did their players get anywhere?

Also, argentina keeper romero was excellent and played in the final, but he's in Sampdoria still

there are many other examples too. those days are gone where teams picked players from WC performances

You are right as far as non football reasons Kiarash. But we should be very happy that Haghighi is playing fix for a first league team in a top 10 league in europe. Sure his team might be one of the crappier ones, but he is definitely getting good exerience against the many good clubs of portugal. His good performances will not go unnoticed, portugeuse league is one of the top in terms of talent production.

exactly. portugal league is good, better than France IMO....and for a keeper its actually better to be in a crap team so they get tested more

besides hes on loan from Rubin i believe, so even if they are relegated, he doesnt have to go with them. im sure they'll find him a new team or he'll go back to Russia.

Presisely. Keep in mind that the rubin keeper is getting pretty old and if youve noticed rubin has been kicking out all the old players with the exception of a few and is going for a completely new team. Im sure in 1-2 seasons rubin will dismiss their 34/35 year old and put in haghighi.

France is the most overrated league. I was a hardline defender of french league before but all the average/good players go straight in premier league when they manage to do 3 good passes. the 3rd of the league is enable win against an azeri club (both home and away) and finish last in an european league group composed of an azeri and a random ukrainian club!
