Crosses have always been one of his stronger points, good to hear he came up with an assist it's been a while since he's gotten himself on the stat sheet. Has he been doing well recently? I watched him a bit in the beginning of the season and he seemed to be back to his old self for the most part his team seems to be doing well too.

"Weber: Whitecaps' Beitashour finally living up to hype as former MLS all-star

On the day the Whitecaps signed Steven Beitashour, coach Carl Robinson called him arguably the best right-back in the league.

Robinson also recalled how difficult it was to play against Beitashour, “because he kept bombing forward at every opportunity.”

A year a half later, Caps’ fans are seeing more of the Beitashour who was touted on that January day — the player who racked up 13 assists in 52 games for the San Jose Earthquakes in 2011 and 2012.

When Beitashour whipped in a terrific cross for Kekuta Manneh to head in against Kansas City last Saturday, it marked the fullback’s team-leading fifth assist this season.

The subsequent defensive collapse by the Caps stole the headlines, but the attacking play of both their fullbacks — veteran Jordan Harvey enjoying a strong season on the left side — has been among the reasons for the rise in goals of late.

Vancouver’s scored 13 times in their last four MLS games and the scoring chances are coming from everywhere, which makes them a very difficult team to defend.

“Everything’s clicking for us,” Beitashour said of the offence, deflecting talk of his own assist total. “It’s more of a team thing. We’re doing things together. We’ve got each other’s backs. We’re going forward together, we’re defending together, and that’s the biggest thing.

“I know people were saying ‘Why don’t you (Beitashour) attack more, but you can’t attack when you don’t keep the ball, and now we’re seeing more glimpses of it when we’re in possession.”

Beitashour’s also reluctant to make excuses for his drop in production through the 2013 and 2014 seasons but admits he wasn’t the same player after sports hernia surgery midway through 2012, when he was an MLS all-star and won a Supporters’ Shield with San Jose and their big target forwards.

He played the whole 2013 season through pain — struggling to sleep many nights — and it still hurt him to plant and whip balls in during 2014. Getting up and down the line wasn’t as much fun, either.

He credits the Caps’ medical staff with getting him healthy again and it’s showing in his play after a slow start to 2015, which can probably be explained by his short pre-season (he went on his honeymoon) as well as the stress of labour negotiations (he and Harvey were the Caps’ player reps).

“I know I had a bit of a drop-off when I had my surgery,” he said. “I felt great in 2011-2012. I don’t want to sound cocky, but if they made a good run, I was confident I could put the ball wherever they wanted it.

“I feel good again and that’s credit to our training staff here.”

It’s a good time for Beitashour to find his rhythm again.

After 18 months of having his starting spot nice and secure since replacing the retired Y.P. Lee, the Iran international has some competition beyond young Ethen Sampson, who filled in admirably when needed.

Robinson used the summer transfer window to bring in Costa Rican right-back Jordan Smith, who has size and speed and who showed off some of his attacking skills in practice already this week.

“I told him that I’m bringing someone in and he liked it,” Robinson said of Beitashour’s reaction to the signing. “Competition is brilliant. If you get comfortable, you get stale. And if you get stale, you don’t perform at the levels you want to.”

Beitashour’s likely to start for the Caps (13-9-3) against Dallas (11-7-5) this weekend (7 p.m., TSN1, TSN 1410), although don’t be surprised if Robinson throws Smith into the lineup as soon as Wednesday at home to Montreal.

Watching Caps’ games is among Beitashour’s least favourite pastimes, and he’s looking forward to Saturday, having been injured for the Caps’ heartbreaking playoff loss to Dallas on a soft penalty.

“We’ve waited a long time to finally get to play them again,” he said. “I think guys are excited to kind of redeem ourselves, but we know this is one of many big games we have left.”"

Wow that was a crazy match, first Vancouver with a brace and then conceding the 4th goal on 94' and losing 4-3. The crowd was so loud, interesting in a country that football is not yet that big of a sport, yet most stadiums are packed. Compare that to our empty stadiums...

dammitt missed that game..!!? knew had a game but forgot we were playing Esteeve's team that day..
i have season tickets but figured with most of our starters playing and winning the Cup Semi-finals midweek, there'll be a tired and mostly benchwarmers playing the sat. game..!!

looks like i missed a doozy..!!

btw, SKC most of the times get sell-out crowds for our league game..! not bad for middle america smaller city with already 2 other big professional sports teams (Royals and Chiefs) in the mix vying for spectators..!!

you guys cant tell me u rather see heydari in the RB spot and not beita, like i dont care if he is the starter or the second string or even the third string! he is younger and better than heydari! sure heydari is versatile but he has no future.

yep. I'd take beita over heydari anyday

when we go to guam and play on that rubber surface, i want to see beita starting RB. he is the only one on the team familair with such a surface, and it will help us alot.

Yeah, interesting observation. If there was any game I would want Beitashour to start in it would be the Guam away game
