really happy that nariman jahan was invited but also dissapointed that sadeghian was not called up, although it was to be expected as he hasnt played a competitive match in 2 months. I really hope to see him for the south korea friendly though.

He's there. I'm actually impressed we get to play Benfica. As good as any other friendly we would have had.

Nope. But we shouldn't worry as Baitashor was called up instead. I've heard he is just as good.

Even the game against Estoril will be a good warm-up / get-back-into-it game since the boys haven't played together for a few months.

Interestingly, this game will complete a trio of Iranian connections with Cascais (where Estoril is based). The 2nd one was an Iranian cultural week held there a couple of years ago, but the first and most important is an urban legend that Cascais (pronounced cash-kysh) was actually named after Ghashghai people from Iran if I remember it correctly.

The first reaction of course would be to dismiss that as pure myth since Ghashghais were a tribal people with not much influence or travel outside their nomadic routes in Iran, but they did actually put up a fierce fight against the Portuguese in southern Iran in the early 16th century and the first appearance of the name Cascais in official state documents is from the mid 16th century when its medieval fortress was supposed to put up a firece fight to hold back a Spanish invasion.

I thought you were convinced that the Portugal camp was pretty much useless?

Estoril finished 4th in the first league last season.

                        Moi, convinced?! Never!

I didn't say the Portugal camp was going to be useless bro. I said the S. Africa camp wasn't anything special and frankly quite useless with so few players released by their teams. I usually don't start with some preconceived notion that something is good or bad regardless of the details. That's why I asked these very important questions:

1 - Do we have any friendlies lined up in Portugal?
                        2 -
Aren't they [Primeira Liga teams] involved with their league right now?
3 - Are we going to be playing their reserve teams?

Obviously the answers to those questions make a HUGE difference in judging how useful or useless this training camp will be... As it turns out, we do have some good friendlies lined-up and also there are no Primeira Liga matches scheduled for that period, meaning it's less likely that we'll play against reserve players.

                        To sum up:

IF most of our players are released by their clubs, AND IF we do end up playing Estoril and Benfica AND IF they play with their main teams, this camp will be very useful.

IF half our team isn't released by their clubs, OR IF these two games are cancelled, OR IF we end up playing with Estoril's or Benfica's reserve teams, then this camp will not be so useful (which is still not to say it will be useless, 'cause it's definitely better than nothing and the past couple of months).

Club Teams often make for a more formidable opponent than National Teams..!!
especially decent, famous Clubs like Benfica..!
even if they field a very likely experimental squad, they still will manage to give us a very challenging game..!

Stop riding the donkey's back. No one said they were outright useless. We expressed concern about what teams we would be playing. Even so, again my concern is what Benfica side shows up? Will all of their A-Squad be there? Are we playing it in a competitive sense, or with 20 subs and two different lineups? All of these things will be determined once the matches are underway.
