Watch any of the streams that other channels from foreign countries, UAE, Qatar, Korea etc. show when there are matches in Iran. Those are all broadcast in HD.

Iran's issue is broadcasting HD, not capturing HD. Frankly if you take a look at what's going on inside of Iran you'd agree that any money that isn't being stolen, is better spent on the people + infrastructure instead of HD broadcasting because you're sitting thousands of kilometers away and wish to see a few more pixels.
From what I read from the Korean forums is that their broadcasting stations apologised for the 4:3 and bad quality as the Iranians were providing the broadcasting this time round.

You ONLY ever get HD broadcasting in Iran if foreign TV crews are providing the stream.

the problem with the broadcast in Iran is that all the equipments are not HD broadcast ready such as cameras, switchers, routers and finally the high speed internet for broadcast capabilities. Even a foreign company will have major problems to broadcast anything LIVE from Iran in HD. This is a huge infrastructure change for Iranian media therefore they dont want to spend money on it and are lagging behind. It's not like they buy a couple of gopro HD cameras and they are on.

The HD cameras with powerful zoom lenses that are used in stadiums are at least $500,000 each so imagine they must have 4-5 cameras to do a football match and the switchers are expensive and they will need at least 5-10 million dollars to make Azadi HD broadcast ready then they still have to upgrade the internet speed as well or use fiber optic cables which does not exist in Tehran either. So do not expect this for a long time soon unless a foreign company comes and does that investment and charges us in the future.

IRIB does actually have one channel in HD, but not for sports. The whole channel should be renamed to K.I.R.I.B.

I was wondering for a long time what they were shouting. Sounded indeed like K*r to me, but I never thought it would actually be that . Oh man, iranians are the most k*skhol people in the entire world

The problem is that IRIB doesn't have any competition, therefore they don't need to make any further investments. IRIB doesn't care about people or Iran's image. To them it's a waste of investment since there's no return on it.

Sorry but that info is false. At present time all cameras at the Azadi are Standard Definition. Take a look at the Korean broadcast of the recent game. You will see that pregame in the studio is in TRUE HD but as soon as the signal from the Azadi starts, what you have is SD 4:3 picture which has been UPCONVERTED TO HD. All genuine TV HD broadcasts are in 16:9 which is why the pregame in the studio has a wider picture.

rest assured, the switches and routers they have today can handle the multicast traffic.

if IRI felt that HD cameras can help identify anti-IR people better, you would have a complete infrastructure change overnight.

                IRIB...

Hmmm, i'm pretty sure all of Tehran is covered by fiber optics cables, the government has the power to give all of Tehran high speed internet overnight. This is why most people in Iran use Irancell's Wimax which is a cellular data based internet service because the fiber optics cables that are installed in their houses don't support ADSL.
