What happened was he was very easy to piss off, and that's exactly what those in charge at the time did to him to kick him out of team melli/ make him leave. He got invited to Team Melli, and his number 11 shirt which he participated with from AC1996, WC 98 and so on was given to the young Nikbakht Vahedi. Azizi said this is disrespectful and started having problems with the TM, and they told him if you don't like it we won't invite you.
Fast track to 2005 when Iran was having problems qualifying (grouped with Jordan, Qatar, etc.), him and hashemian who also had problems were reinvited to TM. Iran must have won against Qatar in order to not get knocked out of the world cup, and that's what happened. He was subbed in towards the end with Iran still tied, and in injury time, he made a pass to mahdavikia in the 18 yard box (which no one had done throughout the game), and Mahdavikia sent a pass to Hashemian who scored the last minute of the game, to keep Iran's hopes up. This was the preliminary stage of qualifying by the way.

Now that I think about it, considering that it is claimed that the Iran Bahrain game was fixed, (the one that knocked us out of the WC 2002 games), I can see why he was left out. He would have for sure reacted and caused problems based on the character he has...Comment

also, remember his coaching career in IPL? where he took one of his players out cuz he was so bad and didnt even put another sub in?
he was trying to make the point that u are so bad, we dont deserve another player to replace you

to be fair, Nick Garcia was a major hack and probably the Dirtiest MLS defender/player from those era, he always resorted to dirty tactics vs opponents forwards and fked with their heads during our matches..!!
in that game, away from ball and eyes of the Ref he kept Hacking Khodadaad and naturally being the hot-headed person Khodadaad was, he finally reacted going after him in front of the ref..! and then even refused to leave the pitch after he got red-carded and wanted to still fight..! they had to send the security guards to remove him from the pitch..! lol
No doubt he was a Legend and played the most vital role in our team qualifying and performing admirably at WC 98..!!
He always had good intentions & was very gheyrati but also had a very short fuse..!!
it was easy to get under his skin and annoy him, so football opponents and dirty iranian reporters would key on that weakness to get a rise out of him, in order to get him pissed off and consequently in trouble for overreacting...!!
a bit under-sized, but he was an extremely witty and technically gifted footballer...!! his football intelligence was probably only 2nd to AK8..!!Comment
