    Asian Cup Preparations. A Comparison

Footbalitarin posted an interesting comparison of the preparation of our rivals in the Asian Cup.

Looking at the below I am not sure why people expect our team to win the cup. We are so under prepared and untested that its not even funny.

You only earn what you sow. Frankly, even qualifying from our group should be considered a success looking at the dismal state of our football.

Agree. I posted our last 5 matches compared to Japan and got no response. Anything beyond lasst 16 is a miracle. CQ and IFF failed this team and its fans...

The preparation looks a lot worse on paper than it actually is. Yes it is not good but queiroz will have 3 full squad camps and the south africa one. They did not play many international friendlies but games were still played. There should be no excuse to not make it out of the group stage.

Haha Iran is ------ and screwed, just admit it. They have hit rock bottom, stinking more than any team. Stop that "friendlies mean nothing" BS. Why do other teams play them then? Cause they can't find any club B teams to play??

        Mod edit,
        please keep it clean.

What do you expect? As long as IR is in power, our football is doomed. Enjoy this year of 2014 while it lasts, it's all downhill from here...

And we still have people who say we should be in the semi's or else it's CQ's fault
              Team Meli Iran
              Perspolis FC
              Malavan Bandar Anzali

                Here's how it works.

People: Iran has no chance in the Asian Cup. We'll be lucky to make it out the group stages.

*Iran makes it out of the group stages*

People: The easy part is over. Anything less than championship is an utter failure.

                *Iran finishes third

People: This Asian Cup was a complete disaster. Kick out CQ. Get rid of the useless Nekounam, Dejagah, Ando, and Gucci who have never done anything for Team Melli. If Jahanbakhsh is the best we have for the future, then we're doom. Also, someone please kill Shojaei. We've become a tier 3 Asian side with no hope for the future.

*Iran qualifies for the 2018 World Cup 2.5 years later*

People: Anything less than the quarter finals is a failure.

Anyway, you get the point. Bloated expectations and constant finger-pointing has become the standard for Team Melli.

No Nader jaan, the logic goes like this:

                      * IR has been in power for 35+ years.

                      * IFF has been incompetent and sucked during that entire time (except for a short time under Farahani)

                      * If the state of our facilities and football has not moved forward, it has certainly not moved backward. For part of that period we didn't even have a semi-pro league and our players were driving taxis to supplement their income.

                      * Despite all that, we have always finished the Asian Cup 5th or better even under the IR and with every moron coaching TM or in charge of IFF.

                      * Therefore with a "world class professional coach" in charge of TM earning $2.5 million a year (the 2nd highest in the continent if I'm not mistaken), our expectations should not be lowered, if not raised.

                      * Therefore, anything less than 5th place in this tournament would be a failure for CQ and Iran.

These are not bloated expectation, but realistic expectations based on our record. Some of us just don't like constantly lowering our expectations, from the final to the semis to the quarterfinals and now according to CQ's latest interview possibly an exit at the group stage, just because someone keeps repeating in interviews that we're amateurs, we're shit, we're nobodies and therefore we should throw our hats up in the air if we make the quarterfinals.

I have never seen such lowered expectations from TM fans even with the shittiest coaches we've had in the past. I don't recall one time of going out in the quarterfinals and people saying well, we deserved that. It has now come to a point that if we go out in the group stage, some of us are going to say well we deserved that!

And the funny part is that some people think the people who have high expectations of TM, not the ones that are content with a group stage or quarterfinal exit, are being negative!

Everything you said is correct however I'm referring to the general trend of opinions on PFDC. I'm not sure if you browsed the site before you joined a year ago but I'm referring the general mentality that has existed here since the 2007 Asian Cup. We're either a 3rd-tier side who has fallen from the top echelon of Asian football or we're Asia's perennial footballing powerhouse. There's always a jump from one extreme to another.

Yeah, I totally agree with you on the flip flopping extreme mentality. I don't think TM has ever been a third rate Asian team under any coach and I don't think we've been Asia's best under any coach (at least not since the revolution).

I think a fair assessment would be that we've been in the top 5-6 teams and we're definitely capable of greatness if that's what we aim for. That doesn't mean we're necessarily going to achieve greatness, since so many other factors come into that, but I never want us to sell ourselves short and we fail in the process of trying to achieve greatness, as long as we give a good account of ourselves, I for one will be content if not happy.
