I found the comment extremely inappropriate. It's one thing to say we have to respect our opponents, it's another thing to say they are the favorites to go through.

What would these "mind games" (even if that was the case) accomplish anyway? You guys think that Qatar and UAE are actually going to play worse or underestimate Iran because CQ said they're favorites to go through?! If anything, he just told them that he doesn't believe in his team and gave them extra confidence to play against us and play even harder smelling the win.

Or do you think these comments are somehow going to build the confidence of our players and encourage them to play harder? The boys were going to go into these games all gheyrati and given it 110% like they've always done. They really didn't need extra pressure on them or 2nd guessing themselves that the other teams are better and get off to a nervous start in each game.

Are we even going to re-define basic psychology just to defend some of these questionable actions by CQ? How many of you were raised by parents who constantly told you that you suck, that you are nothing, that everyone else is better than you and you just looked at that as mind games and went on to become a successful person in life?!

I like Queiroz and I still think he is the best coach TM can have right now. But these arent "mind games" as some people mentioned here. He has repeatedly belittled team meli. This isn't the first time. Saying that Gutter and UAE are favourites is insulting. Gutter and UAE are not going to hear this and get all excited and overlook us, therefore there is no 'mind games' here. None of our opponents are actually going to believe his statement and look past team meli.

All this ridiculous statement does it create a negative atmosphere. Clearly it rubs off team meli supporters the wrong way and I bet there are a few team meli players who will be agitated by his comments as well. So to sum it all up... his comments do not in any way give us a psychological advantage and realistically they may give team meli a psychological disadvantage.

^^ I completely disagree with you in this situation Bi-honar. We are talking about a team not any individual and since he is talking about a team he is playing mind games in this instance. Regardless of the mind games he has to prove to us he can bring us a trophy or to the semi finals and if he doesnt he will be a failure to many Iranians.

I have to agree with the minority here and say that these are not mind games, I believe what Mourinho usually says before games are mind games, what CQ said before our game in Ulsan was mind games, this is not, this is more like an attempt to lower us fans' expectations in case of a disaster.

I was very disappointed when I read his remarks about Qatar and UAE being favorites!

Ghotbi didn't have Jahanbaksh, Dejagah, Azmon, Gucci, Ghafouri and etc. and we breezed through our group in 2011 with 9 points. We defeated Iraq the title holders, an always fighting and spirited north korea and UAE with ease. and again, we had no big name star. no ARJ, no Dejagah, no Azmon. we had a very humble team with a coach who was a nobody compared to CQ. I mean for god sake, CQ was the coach of Real Madrid, the Portugal national team and Man U. Ghotbi was a nobody, we had a humble, no star team and still we had no problem.

So, for CQ to say such things... very disappointing.

We were lucky to defeat iraq 4 years ago in the asian cup with that free kick that went in to the goal. Big blunder by iraqi defense.

I suggest reading the whole interview. The context of the statement might help with understanding it. He was making a comparison between UAE and Qatar preparation, military issues for players and tax issues and said by doing much better job than us they have made themselves the true favourites. Of course media and fans will always ignore context.

isn't every goal scored in football is scored because of a blunder by someone in the opposing team? goalkeeper making mistakes, defenders, halfbacks giving up the ball, etc. isn't that the nature of football? a goal is a goal and a victory is a victory.

There are 2 reasons for this:

                    1. To send a message to IFF and IRI, that their support has been pathetic
                    2. To make sure we do not underestimate UAE or Qatar

Nigeria and Argentina underestimated us. Nigeria got a tie, and Argentina barely got a win. Bosnia did not take the game lightly and came fully prepared to beat us. If our mentality is that we can just show up and receive our 3 points, then we are wrong. The players and coaches need to take all 3 teams seriously. No game is a sure win.

calm the f down. By now you should know that CQ is always doing this.
IRI's politics is no different than handling a pressure cooker ..... As the pressure builds up, you slowly let the steam out just a tad bit so that you don't see overflow, and once the pressure from below is less, you put the lid down again and raise the temperature.
