Unfortunately nowadays most Iranian professional players would do anything for money as you saw in our post 2014 WC transfer window, and this does not only apply to that period but in general. It's just that the current generation of players value much more money over football progress unlike older players like Hashemian, Mahdavikia etc...I went to Sharif University. It's probably a generation issue here. Players like Mahdavikia, Daei, Hashemian had some inherent nationalism that was always prioritized over money. These were guys who grew up during the Iran-Iraq war and were infused with patriotism. Our younger players did not have that same exposure and were raised in a time where materialism is rising in Iran. The cars, girls, fast life are preferrable to the players especially in leagues that do not require much work. Players who love football more than money will still go abroad such as ARJ and Azmoun.
There are those who go to Arab countries who want to secure a good future for their families, including our older defenders. Then there are those who want to make cash. To curb this, our league will have to go through a privatization where players will have to earn their wage increases and be mentally filtered to believe that their careers/money prospects will always be better if they improve the IPL/move to Europe.
