They're just an improvement on Bahrain. It's an almost identical style though. They'll come at us just as Bahrain did, but with more ambition and taking bigger risks as their full-backs are an attacing threat (Hassan in particular is the Asian equivalent of Roberto Carlos with a hammer of a shot included). Their striker Muntari/Abdullah poses a pacey physical force but no more so than John who Hosseini had in his pocket for 90 minutes. The key is to keep Khalfan and Haydos quiet behind their striker. The former's got pace and is a class dribbler so Nekounam and Adranik will need to be very careful.
We'll defend as solidly as ever and ensure we have all our players in position to deal with their attacks and we'll then counter and absolutely wipe the floor with their open defence.Comment

The ranking in each group shall be determined in descending order as follows:
20.1 greater number of points obtained in group Matches;
20.2 if two (2) or more Participating Teams have obtained equal number of points in group Matches:

Ravshan Irmatov will be the referee for the Iran-Qatar game
He was the ref for the opening game between Australia and Kuwait and is the 5 time winner of the AFC Referee of the year award (2008-2001 and 2014). He also officiated 4 WC 2014 games and is arguably the best Ref on the continent.
He was the official for the following TM games:
* Iran 2 - Iraq 1, opening game of the 2011 Asian Cup
* Iran 0 - S. Korea 1 (AET), quarter-finals of the 2011 Asian Cup
* Iran 2 - Qatar 2, 3rd round of WC 2014 qualifying - Qatar got a penalty right at the beginning of the game

I feel sad for Davari how things turned out for him. From being a regular Bundesliga goalkeeper and in the World Cup squad to being spat on by Grasshopper fans in some 2nd tier European league...and no longer in TM.
Nonetheless he still shows support for the team. Rahmati would have hoped for Iran to lose. This is the difference between European based players and IPL ones right here.
And good that Stielike is acknowledging Iran being quite favorites. However, in november after the Azadi friendly he said he wanted to eliminate Iran in particular. South Korea stinks big time, any coach they appoint turns into an asshole and anti-Iran.Comment

Gulf Cup champions curse looks set to strike again

No side have managed to follow up a Gulf Cup title with victory in Asia's biggest tournament, with Qatar the 12th team to attempt the feat. A 4-1 loss to United Arab Emirates on Sunday, coupled with the loss of key defender Bilal Mohammed for the remainder of the tournament, leave them odds on to be the fourth consecutive Gulf champions to exit the Asian Cup at the group stage.
Only Kuwait have managed to make some kind of headway after winning the Gulf Cup, reaching the knockout stages of the Asian Cup on three occasions after winning the biennial tournament. At the 1976 Asian Cup, the Kuwaitis reached the final of the then six-team tournament in Iran but were beaten by the hosts 1-0 in Tehran.
In 1996, they were fourth, and they made the quarter-finals four years later, but like Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Iraq they are still waiting to double up. Iraq's golden generation of the 1980s never managed to attempt the double with the 'Lions of Mesopotamia' not competing in four Asian Cups from 1980.
Three-times Asian champions Saudi Arabia finished bottom of their group in 2004 after lifting the Gulf Cup the previous year, with the UAE also making a first round exit in 2007 following the regional triumph. Kuwait made it 10 titles at the Gulf Cup in December 2010 but could only manage three defeats a month later at the Asian Cup in Qatar as they slumped out.
Fatigue perhaps or pressure to deliver? It is unclear what the reason is, but Qatar were meant to be different at this Asian Cup. Just one defeat in 2014 and their impressive Gulf Cup triumph in Saudi Arabia last month had them labelled as dark horses in Australia.
Algerian head coach Djamel Belmadi has won praise for his team's style, with attacking verve provided by Khalfan Ibrahim and Hasan and the defensive stability brought by Bilal and goalkeeper Qasem Burhan helping them go 11 games unbeaten. However, they froze on Sunday, with their backline, shorn of Bilal, continually ripped apart and Qasem tossing in numerous errors to help inflate the scoreline.
Next up is Iran, who beat Bahrain 2-0 in their Group C opener. Defeat for Qatar, the 2022 World Cup hosts, would likely result in the Gulf Cup curse claiming another victim.
