Having untested Amiri playing in such an important match but leaving out Omid Ebrahimi on bench or not inviting Khalatbari at all, point to a lack of vision and understanding in tactical football.
Explains why CQ never won any silverware throughout his long coaching career.

i was honestly expecting omid ebrahimi to come in for shojaei after pouladi got red card since omid ebrahimi like ando is an oxygen tank a fighter in the middle of the field who can somehow replace the 11th play with his excessive running and tackling. dont know how it would end up but ebrahimi is a good penalty taker although he did miss 2 penalties recently

I'll humor you with Khalatbari, but what does Omid Ebrahimi have to do with Amiri? Omid could have been a sub for Nekounam or Ando. He's not a winger. Can someone with "vision and understanding in tactical football" clarify this one?
You mean other than winning the Youth World Cup twice with Portugal and serving as the main tactician of Man United during their golden era, with Ferguson himself describing him as "the closest you could be to being the Manchester United manager without actually holding the title"... You mean other than those achievements right? Then again Ferguson is probably nadid badid too. And just to be nice we'll pretend we don't know the closest GN could ever come to Man United manager is by getting his autograph in the stadium parking lot.

Just an FYI, the subs I would have made in hindsight after the red card are pretty clear in my mind, and hopefully CQ will use this logic if we ever have an unfortunate red card again.
I would have done as he did and moved Hajsafi back, but I would have made him a LWB. We had the lead, and it was necessary to protect it. I would have brought in as my first sub at halftime, Amir Hossein Sadeghi for Shojaei. I would have changed to a 5-3-1 formation for the remainder of the match.
Essentially:
------------------Haghighi---------------
----Hosseini-Sadeghi-Pouraligangi
Ghafouri---------------------------Hajsafi
---------Nekounam-Teymourian--------
-------Dejagah--------------------------
------------------Azmoun---------------
Due to their increased work rate in this formation, I would likely have brought a veteran like Heydari in for Ghafouri. Despite Heydari being a headless chicken on offense, he is a solid RB in my opinion, defensively.
My last sub would have been Gucci for Azmoun if they had still tied it up, and if we had still kept the lead, I would have brought in Beikzadeh for Hajsafi in the dying embers just to add that extra muscle.
To be honest, I don't know why CQ didn't do this, as he's thought of as such a defensive minded coach...
When we actually had a lead to protect, it seemed like he was hoping to still score more despite us being 10-men.
I was in my living room screaming "bring Sadeghi in!!!!" at my tv, because it would have filled the gaps Hajsafi was leaving on our left side to have 3 CB's at the back. We really didn't need too much more offense, and we could have changed our tactics if they did equalize.
I knew they would equalize though based on the fact that CQ kept it 4 at the back. We had too many vulnerabilities with the space created by the missing man. I feel like this game was an easy 1-0 win, despite the red card even. We could have still won, but I think CQ was having a rage attack and basically said, we're gonna f*ck them up, put someone fast like Amiri and Jahanbakhsh in to score more for us.
It's crazy how we only had offensive subs in a game we were leading 1-0. The tactical approach in such a situation was flawed. Our intent should have been to initially keep the lead, and then bring in 2 fresh strikers in the case of an equalizer.
This is just my armchair opinion, but I believe it has some credibility based on logic alone. 5 at the back would have frustrated the hell out of Iraq, and could have held us another 45 minute clean sheet.
I believe CQ's subs were perfect for the case where we entered halftime 0-0 with a red card in the first half. I couldn't believe he didn't really do anything to bolster our defense to protect the lead, especially with him supposedly being a coward who only plays defense.

Nobody would have a young, untested player suddenly deployed in defense during a crucial match like the quarter final versus Iraq, unless he underestimated the opponent's abilities. (Bosnia match anyone?) All 3 Iraq goals came from Amiri's side of the field due to poor defending and inability to read the game... A sound tactical decision for CQ after the red card would have been to pull back, bring in the experienced and physically strong Sadeghi as new LB, and shuffle the midfield so someone like Ebrahimi or Rafie could take over as the midfielder in front of Ando and Nekounam for linking defense to attack.

when you are down a player and have 45 more minutes or even worse, 80+ minutes to go, you substitute in a player that is active, young and can cover lots of ground. That's why he took out Shojaei and brought in players like Amiri and Jahanbakhsh. If Dejagah could still run, he would still be in the game. You don't put in a 33 year old player who is hardly mobile in a game when you are down 1 player. Maybe if it were the 80th minute and we had to protect a goal, you would do that, but not so early in the game. This is just football 101. for once we have a coach that has brought some form of unity and professionalism to our national team. We have a team that is fit to play and is at least known for something, even if some of our experts don't consider strong defense important.“It is easier to fool the people, than to convince them they have been fooled." - Mark Twain

As for his age, do you honestly believe 26 is not young? Did you rather have a slower shojaei in the game? A 33 year old sadeghi? Who would you have brought in instead of Amiri? feel free to enlighten us.“It is easier to fool the people, than to convince them they have been fooled." - Mark Twain

1 - He left his man (Yasin) unmarked on the 1st goal and was walking in the middle of the field instead.
2 - He again left his man unmarked on the 2nd goal and was slowly walking back toward our goal.
3 - He completely side stepped the play on the 3rd goal.
4 - Shojaei had one touch on the ball every 2 minutes and a pass every 4 minutes with 90% accuracy, creating a chance in 45 minutes. Amiri had a touch on the ball every 3.3 minutes and a pass every 5.3 minutes with 75% accuracy, creating 0 chances in 85 minutes.
Unfortunately, the AFC site does not provide distances covered by players but I can assure you that Amiri was no where near even 8 km in 85 minutes of play.
