This is a very good in-depth article that looks at the 4-4-2, how it developed into the 4-2-3-1 and further into formations like the 3-5-2 and 4-3-3. It's definitely worth a read for every football fan: http://www.theguardian.com/football/...onathan-wilson
As you'll notice in the article, the 4-2-3-1, which is what we employed during the World Cup, is highly dependant on the abilities of the two holding midfielders in defense and that's where Ando and Nekou did really well.
But it's also dependant in attack on the play making abilities of the CAM to connect with the two holding midfielders in a diamond formation and to distribute the ball. Ashkan is the only one who could have played that role properly from our roster and that's the position CQ should have nurtured him into during the qualifiers.
And all that brings us to our problems in the current campaign... We are not only missing the proper CAM (still) but with Nekou gone and Ando out of form (both physically and mentally), we essentially lost the only part of the 4-2-3-1 that was working well for us - our two holding midfielders.
Ebrahimi has never been a good holding midfielder and never will be - he's too offensive minded and not disciplined enough for that position. When your holding midfielder starts to move up too much (to make up for the lack of your play-maker CAM) you also force up your wingers who generally have to play in front of CDM's.
That in turn translates to one of your defenders getting sucked into the open space behind your winger - in our case this is most often Ehsan but sometimes also Vouria. In essence, you end up playing a [skewed] 3-5-2 for large portions of the match, when your game plan was a 4-2-3-1.
And as we said earlier about the 3-5-2 it's a great formation when you're playing much weaker teams - hence good results against India and Guam - but could be a disaster against better teams - hence our terrible performance against Oman.
Unfortunately, this tactical weakness has become way too obvious in TM and you see it exposed more and more. Because if I can see it, you can rest assured someone like Le Guen has not only seen it, but made his game plan around it.
Let Ebrahimi and/or Ando get sucked into offensive positions against a 4-3-2-1 because they ultimately have nowhere to go against 3 holding midfielders and once you catch them out of position get your players behind them to fully expose the open space.
You can see that on almost all of Oman's attacks and good chances (if you just pause and look at the position of our players) where it looks exactly like we're playing a 3-5-2 that's gone completely bad and both Ando and Ebrahimi completely out of the play and their defensive roles.Last edited by Bi-honar; 10-31-2015, 09:59 AM.

Hi friends, it has been a long time since I visited here last time.
From weibo it said that before the last round our manager discussed with Morteza and showed the willingness to extend the contract. But Morteza explained that he had already received the invitation from a European club. Comments on this weibo says that it is perhaps a Dutch club.
Another rumor is he will go to Persepolis after the season.
Whatever Tianjin fans really appreciate the effort Morteza brought to us. All of us feel very disappointed about the performance this season. Rumors says after this season a new enterprise will take responsibility of our club, replacing the old one completely. Hope this could bring some positive changes to us, and next time if there is another Iranian player playing for us, I hope we can all enjoy the games and celebrate for the success.

What I'm saying is fact... his offers from east Asia are much better than the European offers, and that's why he will most likely not go to Europe

there has been a a lot of negativity and uncertainty about PAG situation and decision to move to China. We have to recognize that when he moved to this team they were not relegation candidates. They had some pretty good players (legionarres) which they lost and didn't replace properly, and many other chinese teams significantly strengthened. However I think it is easier to move from china to europe as opposed to ipl to europe. It is very hard to get money into/out of iran and a very twisted situation in dealing with Iranian clubs, deluded board/owner ppl. This is evidenced by the many players , Hazami, Berzay, mohammadi possibly, and many others who were screwed because of their idiot coaches/management. He has a much bigger chance at negotiating a move to europe now. Hazami also had an offer from a Japanese or Chinese club which he rejected, and now he doesnt even play for foolads youth team. This may just work out. Plus he had a good experience in a new league/ culture and adapted fairly well . He will be required to do that in europe as well.
I doubt he will move back iran unless there are no european options, which i also doubt. Given his age, I also doubt he will just give up and go gutter. He still has the opportunity to give it a shot in europe. If he goes there and it doesnt work out, or he has no offers, I still think he will rather go to east asian team, return to iran (unlikely)
