The latest from the one and only John D:
"But then there was Iran. Despite, or perhaps because of, the whole saga of Carlos Queiroz leaving due to (another) fall-out with the Iranian Football Federation, the team produced a memorable 2-0 win over Chile in Austria. There is more to the story than meets the eye, as so often in Tehran. But should the former Real Madrid boss actually leave, he has delivered Team Melli's best result for some time. It may not have been the strongest South American lineup, at least as the game started. But to deservedly defeat one of the leading national teams in the world on neutral ground was truly impressive.
Javad Nekounam, playing his 151st game for his country, grabbed the first in the first and Vahid Amiri added a second just after the break. The delight at home is tinged with the realisation that the former Manchester United assistant manager, who engineered the win, looks to be on his way out of the Iran set-up."
