a low-level referee could have called it offsides but i think the guy did a great job not calling that play offside because since Nekounam wasn't offside when he got passed to and hes the only one going for the ball and everyone else walked away from that play, that play was just fine. Gucci couldn't be offsides in the first play because he wasn't anywhere around the ball and he walked away from the play. When Nekounam passes it to Gucci , Gucci isn't offside anymore since its a new play. I also saw foreign analysts call it a good call.

1. the player should be in offside position
2. he should be in active play by fifa definition

then you can decide if that was an offside call or not

What is very clear is that Gucci was in offside position
but we are arguing over if it was active play or not

You are taking the rule out of context. If Gucci had purposely waited behind the defense line, then he could be considered OFFSIDE. But at the time the pass was made he and several others had pulled forward from a previous play.

In this case as soon as Nekounam receives the ball, everything is RESET, and when he passed the ball to Gucci to score, Gucci is completely ONSIDE so the Goal is completely clean.

I double checked this with an acquaintance who is a Ref in the MLS and he confirmed this.

If nekounam wasnt there in the first play, sure it would have been offsides but since the ball got to him and he was onsides, the rest arent part of the play anymore.

For me I saw the previous video as a reference which was not clear but this second video make is completely clear for me that Gucci was in offside position but by this example he was not committing offside. (being in offside position does not make the call of offside 100% there are other rules that applies.)

Just look at this video at min 6:20. it will explains it very will with Fifa definition. Its active play and influencing the opponent player are in grey areas.

Damavand and ArminSh are both right that it was not an offside offense but the reasoning was not quiet right. See the video.

1. Gucci is in offside position but
2. It is not offside since when he recieved the ball he was behind the ball and the ball was nearer to opponent's goal line compared to Gucci. If the ball was behind Gucci it could be offside call.

Once again you are right on Reset. Good observation. This active play thing got me completely confused that I ignore those defense filling up the gap because I was still under this impression that Gucci is in offside position. as soon as defenders passed him it was a reset and that rule did not apply.

I admit I was under wrong impression of active play up to now!
