"Seol joins South Korea national team as assistant coach

The Korea Football Association have appointed former Fulham forward Seol Ki-hyeon as assistant coach to national team manager Uli Stielike, the KFA said on Monday.

Seol was part of the 2002 World Cup squad that reached the semi-finals on home soil, scoring the equalizer against Italy in the last 16 before Ahn Jung-hwan gave the Koreans a stunning 2-1 win with a 'golden goal'.

South Korea's qualification campaign for the 2018 World Cup finals under German Stielike has been far from plain sailing, and while they are second in Group A behind Iran they are just a point ahead of Uzbekistan in third.

The top two from Groups A and B qualify automatically for the World Cup in Russia while the third-placed teams will meet to decide who goes into a CONCACAF-Asian Zone playoff for a place at the finals.

KFA technical director Lee Yong-soo said they had been looking for a coach from Europe to fill the vacancy left by Shin Tae-yong, who took over the under-20 squad late last year, but were unable to find a suitable replacement.

"We contacted several coaches from Europe but couldn't agree conditions and since we couldn't afford to spend more time looking we chose from a pool of domestic coaches," Lee said in a statement.

"Having spent much of his career in Europe, Seol will be able to understand how a foreign manager works. He also brings a lot of football knowledge and experience to the table and this will be a big help to Stielike."

Seol spent the early part of his career in Belgium with Royal Antwerp and Anderlecht before moving to England, where he played for Wolves, Reading and Fulham. He played for the national team for 10 years, winning more than 80 caps."

"S. Korea to face Iraq in friendly before World Cup qualifier
          2017/03/30 16:35

SEOUL, March 30 (Yonhap) -- South Korea will take on Iraq in a football friendly prior to a crucial World Cup qualifying match in June, the sport's national federation said Thursday.

The Korea Football Association (KFA) said the match against Iraq will be held in Dubai on June 8, five days before a World Cup qualifier against Qatar in Doha.

With 13 points from four wins, a draw and two losses, South Korea are in second place in Group A in the final Asian qualification round for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Iran are leading the way with 17 points, with Uzbekistan right behind South Korea at 12 points. Only the top two nations from the six-nation group will earn automatic World Cup berths.

Qatar sit in last place in the group with four points on one win, one draw and five losses. They nearly stunned South Korea in their previous meeting in October, blowing a 2-1 lead to lose 3-2.

South Korea are chasing their ninth consecutive World Cup berth but have faced heavy criticism for a string of mediocre performances. South Korea lost to China 1-0 last Thursday, only their second loss to the neighbors in 32 meetings, and squeezed past Syria 1-0 on Tuesday. In addition, South Korea have yet to score or collect a victory away from home in the final round.

These results have put head coach Uli Stielike in the hot seat. The KFA said it will convene a technical committee meeting next week to discuss the overall state of the national team and status of the German-born coach.

The KFA is hoping to bring together national team mainstays from Europe by late May, after their club seasons are over, and have a bit more time to train as a unit than they did prior to the past two World Cup qualifiers.

South Korea and Iraq will meet for the first time since the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup semifinals in January 2015. The Taeguk Warriors then collected a 2-0 victory before losing to Australia in the final.

Against Iraq, South Korea have seven wins, 10 draws and two losses all-time.

In the final World Cup qualifying round, Iraq are in Group B along with Saudi Arabia, Japan, Australia, the United Arab Emirates and Thailand.

Stuck in last place with just four points from one win, one draw, and five losses, Iraq are virtually out of the World Cup qualifying contention. They have a slim chance of reaching the playoff rounds for third place teams from each group, but will need help from other teams."

"S. Korea nat'l football team appoints chief assistant coach
            2017/04/18 11:37

SEOUL, April 18 (Yonhap) -- The South Korean men's national football team on Tuesday appointed a chief assistant coach to help their beleaguered boss Uli Stielike.

The Korea Football Association (KFA) said Jung Hae-sung will be the top assistant to Stielike and will work with the Taeguk Warriors until the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, should South Korea qualify for football's showpiece event.

Jung, 59, previously served on the national team bench at the 2002 and 2010 FIFA World Cups, working under Guus Hiddink and then Huh Jung-moo. South Korea reached the semifinals at the former and made it to the round of 16 in the latter.

Jung has also been the head coach for the K League Classic clubs Jeonnam Dragons and Jeju United.

Stielike has been in hot water for months following a string of mediocre matches in the final Asian qualifying round for the 2018 World Cup. In their two most recent matches, South Korea dropped to China 1-0 on the road and eked out a 1-0 win over Syria at home.

While angry fans here have called for Stielike's head, the KFA technical committee decided to stick with the German coach and offered instead to bolster his coaching staff with an experienced tactician.

"The KFA technical committee decided that Jung is the right person since he has abundant experience as a national team coach and achieved good results at major competitions," the KFA said in a statement. "The KFA reached a contract with Jung after earning consent from him and Stielike."

In the final World Cup qualification round, South Korea are in second place among six nations in Group A with 13 points from four wins, one draw and two losses, four points behind Iran and just one ahead of Uzbekistan. Only the top two nations will earn automatic World Cup berths, and the third-place team must go through a playoffs. South Korea have made the past eight World Cup finals.

South Korea's next qualifying match will be against Qatar in Doha on June 13.

The KFA said Jung will meet with the media Wednesday ahead of the KFA Cup match between FC Seoul and FC Anyang at Seoul World Cup Stadium to talk about his new job."

"Korea football coach to call up injured Ki Sung-yueng, Son Heung-min for World Cup qualifiers

South Korea men's national football head coach Shin Tae-yong said Wednesday he will call up Ki Sung-yueng and Son Heung-min for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers despite their injuries.

Shin, who took over the team last month after Uli Stielike's ouster, will announce his squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Iran and Uzbekistan next Monday. In the final Asian qualifying round for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, South Korea are currently in second place in Group A with 13 points, sitting just one point up on Uzbekistan.

In Asia, the top two teams from Groups A and B can advance directly to the World Cup in Russia. The two third-place teams must go through playoffs for their final chance. South Korea are scheduled to host already qualified Iran on Aug. 31 and face Uzbekistan in Tashkent on Sept. 5 for the finale.

Shin said he is in the final stretch of selecting 26 players and will pick those who are already on his mind unless they are injured this weekend. But the 48-year-old said Ki, who is with English Premier League club Swansea City, is an exception.

Ki went under the knife last month to remove inflammation in his right knee. Swansea recently announced he will be able to be back in action mid-September.

"I want to give Ki the captain's armband even if he can't play," Shin told reporters during halftime at the Korea Football Association Cup quarterfinal between the Suwon Samsung Bluewings and Gwangju FC in Suwon, just south of Seoul. "Ki has been serving a central role well in the national team."

With Ki certain to be included in the roster, Shin also hinted at selecting Tottenham Hotspur attacker Son, who broke his right forearm after landing awkwardly during South Korea's World Cup qualifier against Qatar in June.

The former Bayer Leverkusen forward, however, recently joined Tottenham's training.

"I think Son has recovered enough to play the World Cup qualifiers," Shin said. "He will not have a big problem."

Son did not feature for the London club during preseason due to injury. When asked about whether the 25-year-old will be fully fit to play, Shin said he believes that Son will find his form after playing few EPL matches. Tottenham kick off their new season with Newcastle United on Saturday.

"I can't call up Son early, but once he returns to South Korea we will check up on his condition," he said. "Then I have to think about whether I should start him or use him as a substitute."

Shin will train with his national players in the domestic K League starting on Aug. 21 at the National Football Center in Paju, north of Seoul. South Korea are looking for their ninth consecutive World Cup appearance. (Yonhap)"

What are they gonna do. If they dont beat us and Uzbek beats China they need to go to Uzbekistan and win.

Korea is in a difficult situation at the moment. They have already written off victory away at Uzbekistan and are only counting on a victory over Iran at home.
But deep down they know Iran is going to be a tough opponent for them to beat. They will throw everything they have to win and will fight till the last second of the game.
I know this game is not all the important for Iran, but I like to see Korea punished!

WE MUST PUNISH KOREA for what they did to us prior to Brazil! We MUST show them that if they go head to head with us more than once will they pay for it ! Under Ghotbi we were 10 min away from qualification and they relentlessly came at us, even though they had qualified. So IMO we must repay that favor and do the same.
As a matter of principal, This the only way to get them to notice us stronger and realize if ever in the future they want to hurt us, we will come back and hurt them!

Uzbeks won't beat China. This Uzbekistan with their retarded coach Babayan is just pathetic. The best they can get is a draw. They'll need to beat Korea on last matchday.

                        Comment

Honestly wouldn't be so bad if Korea finished third, because they have a better chance of beating Saudi than Uzbekistan does, and hopefully they'll still qualify in the end.

we need to line up a somewhat experimental starting line and so long boys stick to our typical game tactics, we would be unbeatable..!
best the Korean's can hope for at this point is a draw vs us and beating Uzbeks and let the chips fall where it may as far as Direct Qualifications..!
if they press their luck and push too hard for a win, they will most probably loose embarrassingly at home and likely wont recover from that set back and the mounting pressure that ensues..!

i want to see an Alternate, All Out assault Attacking Tactics vs Syria and hopefully a victory with significant margin vs the Syrians at Azadi...! we can not be tactically 1dimentional and have a legitimate chance of advancement outa of WC group stage..! like in 2014, there is a good chance that we may need the full 3 points in at least 1 of the 3 games in order to advance and there will be a fixture where we must dictate the offensive tempo, where 1point wont do and we can not just rely on tanking back and countering ..!
