Espinho: Iran sensationally sealed a spot in the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday thanks to a spirited 3-2 win over Mexico and Brazil’s subsequent defeat of Spain.
Iran’s second victory of the tournament gave them six points from their three Group C games, a decent enough tally, but still not enough to immediately guarantee them a place in the last eight until the Brazilians emerged triumphant to claim top spot and leave Iran looking forward to Thursday’s final eight showdown with Tahiti.
Going into the game fully aware that a win was an absolute necessity if they were to stand any chance of progressing, Iran duly drew first blood at the Espinho Stadium, Amir Akbari, a veteran of three World Cups, scoring in the second minute.
Iran increased their lead courtesy of 15th minute goals from Mohammad Ahmadzadeh - his third in three games - and Faroogh Dara, before Gerardo Gomez and Abdiel Villa gave Mexico renewed hope by making it 3-2 going into the third and final period.
However, despite their best efforts, and hindered by some spectacular goalkeeping heroics from Peyman Hosseini, that Mexico momentum failed to produce any further dividends as Iran held firm to seal a memorable and what ultimately prove to be a crucial win..

.........Much has changed for Tahitian football in recent times, since the nation’s first appearance at a FIFA tournament, which came at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Egypt 2009, a landmark achievement that was followed by the beach soccer team’s qualification for Ravenna 2011 and their stunning campaign on home sand in the world finals two years later.
“It’s all happened very quickly and, in the case of beach soccer, we’ve developed so fast that we can now compete with the best in the world, despite the fact we’re only a little island in the Pacific,” added Kuee, speaking in the wake of their defeat of Paraguay on Sunday, a victory that booked them a place in the last eight at Portugal 2015 with a game to spare.
“We’re not a surprise package anymore. People expect big things from us, though I think we can handle that kind of expectation. And one thing we can’t stop doing, whether we’re favourites or not, is to smile. That’s just Tahiti for you.”
